A candid black-and-white portrait of Seimon Pugh-Jones sitting by a classic military Jeep. Taken at a classic vehicle show.
Shot on a Canon 70D with a 50mm lens, I aimed for a timeless feel by using monochrome, enhancing the textures and contrasts to bring out the details of the uniform, the netted helmet, and the rugged Jeep.

The stronghold dates to the thirteenth century and was initially called Motte Bauçay because the castle was a former stronghold of the Bauçay family, lords of Loudun. The English took the Motte Baussay several times during the Hundred Years' War, and it was devastated during the French Revolution.
It was bought in 1809 by François Hennecart, a wealthy businessman, and then sold to Baron Joseph Lejeune in 1857. However, a fire in 1932 destroyed most of the buildings in the castle, which then became abandoned until it came under the rescue of crowdfunders.
The building on the right, curving into the distance, is the Ringway Centre at Smallbrook Queensway in the centre of Birmingham. It was designed by James Roberts and Sydney Greenwood and completed in 1962, and is integral to the creative vision for the earliest part of the city's inner ring road. Architecture and road layout combine to make an heroic piece of town planning, typical of its era. The Ringway Centre has street level shops, office space in the upper stories and forms a bridge spanning Hurst Street halfway along its elevation.
Notable architectural details include the bands of pre-cast abstract geometric relief panels that separate floors, creating powerful horizonal visual emphasis, and projecting sculptural concrete uplighters which are my own favourite features.
On 1st February 2024 Birmingham City Council's planning committee voted in favour of allowing the building to be demolished. In its place three tower blocks of 44, 48 and 56 stories respectively are planned for the site.
Now (July 2024) a coalition of organisations that believe the building should be saved has applied for permission to lodge a judicial review of that planning committee decision. But to cover the costs of doing this a sum of £15,000 must be raised by 18th July 2024.
The coalition's arguments are threefold:
• Heritage - the Ringway Centre is one of the best surviving modernist buildings from Birmingham's post-war reconstruction
• Zero carbon - demolition and redevelopment would release 187 million Kg of CO2
• Local democracy - the City Council's plans for Birmingham (including this project) do not take account of residents' opinions. This campaign seeks to redress that imbalance
Those who know anything about my architectural tastes won't be surprised to learn that this is a building that I like a lot. I agree with all the arguments above and support the building's re-use rather than demolition on grounds of environmental impact alone.

We see this fish quite regularly, when we walk to my Mum's house to check everything is ok. (Yesterday it wasn't, btw - you may know we had a bad leak in the summer? Yesterday we noticed a small circle of plaster had fallen onto one of the beds. Tim had a crawl around the loft and it turns out there's a gap in the roof felt and he could see daylight! If it's not one thing, it's another!). The fish has moved around the city and we previously saw it in the Guildhall Square. This is the centre of uni land.
My next book is "The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation" (Verso, Sept 2023).
It lays out a detailed plan to disenshittify the internet while giving users a safe and easy path to escape from Big Tech's walled gardens.
Because Amazon's Audible refuses to carry my audiobooks (Audible has a mandatory DRM policy), I make my own audiobooks and pre-sell them on Kickstarter.
Please check out the campaign and consider pre-ordering a DRM-free audiobook and/or ebook, as well as the Verso hardcover:

A candid sepia portrait of Seimon Pugh-Jones dressed as a 1940's photographer whilst sitting on the steps of a mobile museum that he and his family built. He also happens to be a photographer too.
Shot on a Canon 70D with a 50mm lens, I aimed for a 1940's feel for the photo to tie in with the 1940's Photographer look.

This plaque to commemorate the late Dorothy Whipple, a writer of popular fiction, is located on the outside of the building of Victoria House, 76 Milton Street, Nottingham. NG1 3RA.
It reads:
Dorothy Whipple. (nee Stirrup) 1893 - 1966
Dorothy Whipple was once described as the Jane Austin of the 20th Century; her books were extremely popular between the first and second world wars. Her novel, They Knew Mr Wright, set in Nottingham, highlights the importance of people faith in humanity, and was made into a film in 1934, where the opening scene featured the original Nottingham Victoria Station (now demolished).

At 148 years old, MV Kyles is older than the Falls of Clyde, tallship Glen Lee and the Sir Walter Scott.
Believed to be the oldest floating Clyde-built vessel in the UK, MV Kyles was built by John Fullerton & Co. at Paisley in 1872 and served first as a tender for the Clyde fishing fleet up until 1881 when it moved on to 23 further owners across the UK.
The 1872 cargo coaster MV Kyles is a rare and nationally important survivor from the 19th century, a transformational period on the River Clyde when shipyards embraced the possibilities of steam power to become one of the most important shipbuilding centres in the world.
But now MV Kyles needs vital repairs, for which the Scottish Maritime Museum has launched a crowdfunding campaign.
Kyles, which is moored on Irvine Harbourside at the Scottish Maritime Museum’s main site, reaches a staggering 150 year milestone in 2022. However, a long, hard working life, being adapted for different roles across the UK by 24 different owners, has taken a huge toll.
Essential repairs are needed now if this historic vessel is to remain part of Scotland’s living maritime heritage for decades to come.

On 27th November 1919 the people of the Parish of the church of St Matthew in Coldridge, Devon, unveiled a memorial clock on the tower to the 6 local men who gave their lives in the Great War
The unveiling of a tablet bearing the names of the men, and the setting of the clock in motion were performed by Mrs. Lambert, who was accompanied by her husband, the Right Hon. George Lambert M.P. for the South Molton Division. The ceremony was performed in the presence of a large congregation, including all classes and sections of the community.
By a well-known Croydon firm, the clock has a double dial, one facing south and the other west, each dial having a diameter of 6ft. A brass tablet also placed inside the church, has the following inscription: www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/047zKv31z3
"1919. Peace Memorial
The clock in the church tower was erected by the present and former parishioners of Coldridge to commemorate those who, counting not their lives dear unto them, died for their country in the Great War, 1914 - 1919
Private George Parker, 11th Devons
Corporal Herbert Richards, 3rd Devons
Private Sam Sloman (Phillips), Australian Imperial Force
Stoker John Vernon, HMS Indefatigable
Private Ernest George Wilson, 5th Dorsets
Private John Kelland Webber, 3rd Devons"
The impressive service was conducted by Rev. R. Dickinson Price, Vicar of Coldridge, the dedication being performed by the Rev. W. J. Bradford, Rector of Chawleigh. Just prior to its commencement Mrs. and Mrs. Lambert were met at the church porch by the Vicar, who is chairman of the Memorial Committee, Messrs. F. W. Harris (Treasurer) W. Rounsley (secretary) and R. Brealy, and conducted to a pew specially reserved for them.
The clock was set to be started at one minute to three, and a few minutes earlier Mrs. Lambert was conducted to the belfry by Mr. John Harris, Vicar's Warden, preceded by the officiating clergy and followed by members of the Memorial Committee. The hymn "Lest we forget" having been sung, the congregation meanwhile turning towards the belfry, the Vicar, on behalf of the Committee, invited Mrs. Lambert to start the clock. this she did by severing a cord which set the pendulum free. She used for the purpose a pair of scissors presented to her by Mr. Harris and on the enclosing case of which was inscribed "To Mrs. George Lambert, on the occasion of her setting in motion the Memorial Clock, Coldridge, 27th November, 1919."
There ensued a minute's complete silence till the house struck in resonant tones the hour, when Rev. W. J. Bradford offered a prayer of dedication. The procession then moved to the north aisle for the unveiling of the tablet, Mrs. Lambert being escorted there by Mr. W. Luxton, the People's Warden. The tablet was unveiled by Mrs. Lambert drawing aside two national flags, representing both arms of the Service, the men whose names the memorial bore having belonged to the navy and Army. The inscription and names recorded upon it having been read aloud, and the tablet dedicated by the Rev. W. J. Bradford, Tennyson's hymn, "Crossing the Bar" was sung. Then followed a deeply impressive address by the rector of Chawleigh, at the conclusion of which another special hymn "Evening and Morning" was rendered, the service concluding with the Blessing. Miss A. Harris presided at the organ during the service.
A public tea was laid in the schoolroom. Mr. and Mrs. Lambert sat at a table presided over by Mrs. Price.
After tea, the Vicar proposed a cordial vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Lambert for their presence that day, and for the part Mrs. Lambert had taken in the memorial service - this was seconded by Mr. R. Brealy."
This was a feat made possible through the generosity of public subscription by the parishioners who raised £270 to pay for the clock itself and its installation - that’s just over the sum of £17,000 in today’s money!
Some 103 years later in 2023 and despite regular maintenance and care over the years, the clock’s timekeeping had become erratic. On inspection it was now apparent that the time has come to undertake major restoration of the clock’s mechanism including the replacement of several of the original mechanical parts. The cost to complete the restoration work required to enable the re-starting of this much loved and historically important clock is estimated to be in the region of £3,500. Any monies raised over the eventual cost of this restoration work will be put to beneficial use and the upkeep of the Church through the St Matthew’s Church Fabric Fund.
By 18th December 2023 £1,570 was raised with 25 supporters in 28 days

TL:DR Please Help :)
www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/with-a-little-help
Hi all, thank you for taking the time to read my story.
I am a Photographer, and for the past 15 years, I have been capturing the beauty of the Devon countryside. As my skills have increased, so my love for photography has grown, and so;I am keen to explore the art form as a business.
My story begins, like many with COVID-19. Sadly, the company I was working for closed down. As a result of this, I lost everything; my home, friends, camera and even myself.
I am now rebuilding a life for myself with some success. I have managed to secure a home and a job, but with the costs of living and minimum wage so far, I have yet to replace my camera, which went as a result of the above situations.
A camera is the single most treasured item I have ever owned, and seeing it go has affected every aspect of my well-being. My sense of purpose, creative outlet and mental health have all suffered. A friend of mine suggested that I offer a crowdfunding deal in order to raise the funds for a camera. I have nothing to lose, so why not?
How does crowdfunding work?
In essence, I will offer great value rewards in return for upfront investment in my small business. I only need to raise enough to buy a basic camera outfit, and from there I can build momentum on my own.
This includes; Camera body (£200-£500), Lens(s) (£600), Tripod (£50) and Computer (£300-£400) these are all estimates to second hand gear and in the mean time I also saving/working to contribute to this
So, for example; you may wish to buy a portrait reward. Once you have purchased the reward, the money will sit in CrowdFunder, until I have hit my target.
When the target is hit, I can buy the camera outfit and fulfill the rewards.
I have set a few rewards that might be of interest to anyone, from limited editions prints to even personal 1on1 lessons I hope that there is something for everyone. Though seriously, any support is greatly appreciated and even if you just share this campaign on your social media you are just as valuable to me and have my personal thanks.
I have a favor to ask of you. I don’t often ask readers for stuff, but this is maybe the most important ask of my career. It’s a Kickstarter – I know, ‘another crowdfunder?’ – but it’s:
a) Really cool;
b) Potentially transformative for publishing.
c) Anti-monopolistic
Here’s the tldr: Attack Surface – AKA Little Brother 3- is coming out in 5 weeks. I retained audio rights and produced an amazing edition that Audible refuses to carry. You can pre-order the audiobook, ebook (and previous volumes), DRM- and EULA-free.
www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/attack-surface-audi...
That’s the summary, but the details matter. First: the book itself. ATTACK SURFACE is a standalone Little Brother book about Masha, the young woman from the start and end of the other two books; unlike Marcus, who fights surveillance tech, Masha builds it.
Attack Surface is the story of how Masha has a long-overdue moral reckoning with the way that her work has hurt people, something she finally grapples with when she comes home to San Francisco.
Masha learns her childhood best friend is leading a BLM-style uprising – and she’s being targeted by the same cyberweapons that Masha built to hunt Iraqi insurgents and post-Soviet democracy movements.
I wrote Little Brother in 2006, it came out in 2008, and people tell me it’s “prescient” because the digital human rights issues it grapples with – high-tech authoritarianism and high-tech resistance – are so present in our current world.
But it’s not so much prescient as observant. I wrote Little Brother during the Bush administration’s vicious, relentless, tech-driven war on human rights. Little Brother was a bet that these would not get better on their own.
And it was a bet that tales of seizing the means of computation would inspire people to take up digital arms of their own. It worked. Hundreds of cryptographers, security experts, cyberlawyers, etc have told me that Little Brother started them on their paths.
ATTACK SURFACE – a technothriller about racial injustice, police brutality, high-tech turnkey totalitarianism, mass protests and mass surveillance – was written between May 2016 and Nov 2018, before the current uprisings and the tech worker walkouts.
twitter.com/search?q=%20(%23dailywords)%20(from%3Adoctorow)%20%22crypto%20wars%22&src;=typed_query&f;=live
But just as with Little Brother, the seeds of the current situation were all around us in 2016, and if Little Brother inspired a cohort of digital activists, I hope Attack Surface will give a much-needed push to a group of techies (currently) on the wrong side of history.
As I learned from Little Brother, there is something powerful about technologically rigorous thrillers about struggles for justice – stories that marry excitement, praxis and ethics. Of all my career achievements, the people I’ve reached this way matter the most.
Speaking of careers and ethics. As you probably know, I hate DRM with the heat of 10000 suns: it is a security/privacy nightmare, a monopolist’s best friend, and a gross insult to human rights. As you may also know, Audible will not carry any audiobooks unless they have DRM.
Audible is Amazon’s audiobook division, a monopolist with a total stranglehold on the audiobook market. Audiobooks currently account for almost as much revenue as hardcovers, and if you don’t sell on Audible, you sacrifice about 95% of that income.
That’s a decision I’ve made, and it means that publishers are no longer willing to pay for my audiobook rights (who can blame them?). According to my agent, living my principles this way has cost me enough to have paid off my mortgage and maybe funding my retirement.
I’ve tried a lot of tactics to get around Audible; selling through the indies (libro.fm, downpour.com, etc), through Google Play, and through my own shop (craphound.com/shop).
I appreciate the support there but it’s a tiny fraction of what I’m giving up – both in terms of dollars and reach – by refusing to lock my books (and my readers) (that’s you) to Amazon’s platform for all eternity with Audible DRM.
Which brings me to this audiobook.
Look, this is a great audiobook. I hired Amber Benson (a brilliant writer and actor who played Tara on Buffy), Skyboat Media and director Cassandra de Cuir, and Wryneck Studios, and we produced a 15h long, unabridged masterpiece.
It’s done. It’s wild. I can’t stop listening to it. It drops on Oct 13, with the print/ebook edition.
It’ll be on sale in all audiobook stores (except Audible) on the 13th,for $24.95.
But! You can get it for a mere $20 via my first Kickstarter.
www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/attack-surface-audi...
What’s more, you can pre-order the ebook – and also buy the previous ebooks and audiobooks (read by Wil Wheaton and Kirby Heyborne) – all DRM free, all free of license “agreements.”
The deal is: “You bought it, you own it, don’t violate copyright law and we’re good.”
And here’s the groundbreaking part. For this Kickstarter, I’m the retailer. If you pre-order the ebook from my KS, I get the 30% that would otherwise go to Jeff Bezos – and I get the 25% that is the standard ebook royalty.
This is a first-of-its-kind experiment in letting authors, agents, readers and a major publisher deal directly with one another in a transaction that completely sidesteps the monopolists who have profited so handsomely during this crisis.
Which is where you come in: if you help me pre-sell a ton of ebooks and audiobooks through this crowdfunder, it will show publishing that readers are willing to buy their ebooks and audiobooks without enriching a monopolist, even if it means an extra click or two.
So, to recap:
Attack Surface is the third Little Brother book
It aims to radicalize a generation of tech workers while entertaining its audience as a cracking, technologically rigorous thriller
The audiobook is amazing, read by the fantastic Amber Benson
If you pre-order through the Kickstarter:
You get a cheaper price than you’ll get anywhere else
You get a DRM- and EULA-free purchase
You’ll fight monopolies and support authorship
If you’ve ever enjoyed my work and wondered how you could pay me back: this is it. This is the thing. Do this, and you will help me artistically, professionally, politically, and (ofc) financially.
Thank you!
