The humble Grackle Crow feeling on the shore of Traverse Bay, Michigan. It was a bright sunny day and I manged to spend quite some time watching this beauty of a bird as the sun reflected on its vibrant blue/purple neckline
PS: Travelling back from rainy wet misty Scotland today so catch up with all the great photos on here tomorrow and at least managed to get some photography done while away in the mist & rain of the mountains.

The third species in Lockdown Birding. Smart and organised species, always waiting in the backyard for leftovers and scraps.
House Crow, Gagak, Corvus spendens
This species was introduced to this country in 1903 by British from Sri Lanka to control pests in coffee plantations. But it didnt workout as planned, this birds multiply beyond control and become pest itself. Now, it frequents human environment in cities, towns where it scavenges for garbage and edible leftovers. In some states, the towns councils runs shooting campaign every year, with little effect in controlling the species population levels.

Reading that crows are socially monogamous cooperative breeding birds led me to believe that this pair were joined at the heart.
They perched on the wire one cloudy day, gently rubbing their beaks across their partner's head. It just had to be love.

During the Spring I had a resident Fish Crow that discovered my yard while gathering nesting material for a mate. He started visiting my water fountain every day. My husband wanted to call him Ebenezer but we soon realized that he was a Romeo. Apparently my yard was perfect for courting and he brought his girl friend. I witnessed him gathering a peanut that I leave daily for Blue Jays and gently passed it to his mate. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.

As I arrived at Beluga Slough in Homer, another person was leaving, but in her wake there were about 15 crows who appeared to be asking for food. I discovered that several were still working at peanuts still in the husk. This crow flew up to this post and gave me a quizzical look as though asking, "Will you feed us too?"
I read that Alaska is home to one crow, the northwestern crow. Then I read that this species has been absorbed into the American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). Now I'm curious...
