Subaru Crosstrek

At Oceano Dunes on California’s Central Coast just south of Pismo Beach. I was able to shorten my hike out to this scenic area by driving the Subaru Crosstrek for about a mile on the beach. :)

We took a day trip to the Baraboo area and stopped here first. It’s a short .8 mile hike to a waterfall and we were delighted to have the place to ourselves!

I'm mobile again, meet Rocinante, my new workhorse. I don't have Fridays off anymore so I'm going to have to find a new way to get in hikes and still not miss time with Darling Tonia, but somehow, some way my camera and I should be getting more time together soon. If you see this baby comin', get off the sidewalk!

This is their second location (the first, which we’ve eaten at several times, is unfortunately closed). We had a great meal consisting of a taco melt, beet Reuben, and mac & cheese! After eating, we drove to Harrington Beach State Park and took a hike. It was a great outing!

This is pretty much what it has come down to. When I saw this sign, I had to stop to get a picture. It's a joke, of course. A funny one. The politics in America have also become a joke, most decidedly not a funny one. At. All.

A panorama of Trona Pinnacles. The foreground was shot during the twilight after a boring clear sky sunset. The night sky was shot later in the night. It was my 1st trip to Trona Pinnacles, and there was nobody out. The Galaxy was still visible in September on that dark night. It was a great experience and a successful recon mission. I will return again for more sunset and night photography.

...I'm kidding, but sort of not.

As I embark on a new chapter in my life, I am going to be doing many more road trips and drives for pleasure and fun.

Charlie is the co-pilot and actually likes this car as he can see out the windows so much easier.

I like it for the safety features and the fuel efficiency.

And...it's kinda cool looking.

Garden Village, Burnaby, British Columbia

It’s been almost 8 years since we drove the Crosstrek home. The first thing we did with it was bring the pups to the state park to hike. Today, we drove it to the park one last time before putting it up for sale. No pups this time, but they’re always with us in spirit.

We had a hard time letting go of it, which surprised me. It’s just a thing, but at the same time it gave us a lot of memories. It was what we took our last long road trip with the pups with, what we brought Floki & Ivar home in, and it’s given us almost 115,000 miles together of everything from the mundane to adventurous. It’s been the best vehicle we’ve had so far and it’s the longest we’ve kept one.

The hardest thing for me was wiping off Emma’s nose prints from the window. For almost five years, we haven’t dared touch them. I just couldn’t bring myself to clean them off. The other day, I did, and doing so made grief hit me like it was fresh again. I’ll always grieve the memories we can no longer make together, and those nose prints were my way of carrying something of hers around with me. Still, I have so many beautiful memories of all our sweethearts and will forever cherish them.

If you like gravel roads, lots of curves, and steep hills, this is a road worthy of all that.

Charlie and I took the new Crosstrek for a spin and exploration.

He likes this car better as he can actually see out of it in his doggy seat!

at the Subaru Dealership.

Obviously, we know who is in charge here.

We spent the day at the dealership with a fix to my old Subaru and an negotiation for a new Subaru.

There is a very funny story that goes with this on how I chose to replace my Outback with a Crosstrek.

I asked the salesperson to open up the back of the Crosstrek and I literally climbed in with Charlie and pretended to take a nap with him --> on the show room floor.

If I can sleep in the back of the Crosstrek, I can camp with Charlie.

Done. Charlie picked the car and we'll soon replace our old ride.

Happy Dances around.

This is a Male Elk roaming around in the Moraine Park area of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

A couple of months ago my daughter sent me a text "It's time for another road trip dad" A few minutes later she sent me a list of 15 cities we could fly to for under $100.00 each way. I read down the list looking for something in Wyoming, maybe Boseman or Billings, dang no luck. Then I saw Denver. I have always wanted to visit Rocky Mountain National Park but have never been motivated enough to go. Now that I'm a photoholic the RMNP sounded like an opportunity to pick off the first location I had scribbled on my bucket list of places to shoot. We quickly decided on a date and booked our flight. A couple of days later I realized that date was only two weeks after my trip to the Southwest and on Labor Day weekend to make matters worse. Whenever I travel alone I usually camp out BLM style, but with my daughter in toe I thought it best to make a few reservations. The first order of business was to secure a rental car, but as always I would wing it on the accommodations front. When we arrived in Denver early Saturday morning we started seeking out lodging. My daughter is a wiz on the phone apps and was sure she could find something in no time, Wrong, Little did we know that Taylor Swift was playing a concert at Coors Field and we soon discovered that every single hotel/motel room for a 150 mile radius was booked. How popular is that, not only did she sell out every hotel in Denver but in all the surrounding cities including Boulder and Colorado springs. After 4 hours of scouring every website and driving to roughly 30 hotels/motels we resolved our selves to a night in the rental car. The rental car was a bust as well, when we arrived at the rental place which will remain unnamed, they informed us that the cheapest cars in the lot were all rented out. I hit the ceiling, you've got to be kidding I reserved this car 2 months ago, I exclaimed. The manager overheard and came over to inform me that I could chose any car that was in the lot. I headed over to the lot and there right in the middle is the car I really want to buy. A brand new Subaru XV Crosstrek. What better car to take onto the dirt backroads of the Rocky Mountains. That thing was a blast to drive. Now I was feeling lucky, but little did I know the good luck was just starting. More on that on upcoming posts. :)

was easier tonight than ever before.

I got up on a high ridge and had the most fun watching the Aurora show and freezing my hands off.

It was worth it.

Less than 24 hours after picking my new Subaru Crosstrek, me and Duncan buffed out all over North Jersey and into the Hudson River Valley and really gave the new car the tour.. We ended the day with a cool Saturday evening SU-99, about to depart from the MCs.

Yonder, CO - I am a happy owner of a 2022 Subaru CrossTrek. It is a quite capable car with amazing gas mileage. I loved my Jeep however it was time to change things up a bit and I’m so glad I did.

By the way there is a place in Colorado called Yonder, it is way out there,

The parking lot was just a little blip on the side of the road. We had the entire area to ourselves and loved it!

Blue hour during October! This was a bad night as I got my Subaru XV Crosstrek stuck in a ditch that had been dug out by filthy rotten no-good beavers! Yes, you read that right...BEAVERS!!!!! But it was a good night save for the $250 bill to winch me out lol.

Subaru XV Crosstrek

We missed having a Subaru tremendously and decided to trade the Bronco in for another Crosstrek. We were especially happy to do it during the Share the Love event because they are donating $300 to the local animal shelter from our purchase!

Another Crosstrek. Not the same one that I posted last week (different rims). This time in Biltmore Village.

We went for a hike in the Kettle Moraine Forest and it was quite peaceful! We only passed one person on the trail, it was warm & quiet out, and our car was the only one in the lot when we got done.

A Twilight shot of a tool shed at Death Valley Mine. Although the place is not a functional mine, it looks like the area is still occupied. There are a lot of broken relics from the early 1900s, but the 2 houses are in great shape and appears to be maintained by volunteers or a private owner. There was nobody there the whole time I visited. But, there were 2 large Golden Eagles (or Red Tail Hawks) in the area. I first caught sight of them in flight when I arrived. While they circled close above me, I fumbled to change lenses on the GX85 to the telephoto. And no sooner than it was attached, they were gone. It wasn't until sunset, that I see one sitting in the huge nest on the pole in front of the main house overlooking the entire property. Because the pole is so high, the 300mm equivalent on the GX85 would only reveal the head and tail. Also, during the sunset, a huge jack rabbit came by and hobbled around my car inspecting the Subaru Crosstrek, and looked at me dead in the eyes for a few seconds before hobbling off to the buildings. A road runner also came around for a minute waiting for a hand out as did a squirrel and mouse. Nevertheless, this place has a lot of wildlife. And by the looks of the many rodents, I suspect Hentavirus could be in those structures.

Earlier that day the winds were strong and gusty. Once the sunset it was like magic. The winds calmed down, to a light breeze, and the sky cleared up during the blue hour. It's been a long time since I shot in calm conditions. The past 2 to 3 months have been very windy, and always cloudy.

We have it the way we want it now with tinted windows, wind deflectors (on both the sunroof & windows), and some other touches, like a few cat stickers. Definitely not having buyer’s remorse with this car!
