White-backed vultures have a high survival rate. Individual adults have the highest survival rate, while 2 year old birds have the lowest survival rate. Across all ages, the survival rate is estimated to be 90.7%. This means that the deaths of adult vultures will lead to rapid population declines. IUCN

It's about how theory distorts the creative processes themselves. I'm also protesting the elevation of ugliness to a form of high art - not really a separate issue of course.

This black swallowtail is fueling up on a wild bergamot flower in a restored prairie at Neste Valley (park) though it's not open to the public yet. The prairie was planted two years ago on what was previously a corn field and the flowers here now are providing a critical food source for the endangered rusty-patched bumble bee. A bumble bee survey here last week found three rusty-patched bumble bees feeding on these wild bergamot blossoms.

Indigo Macaws - this is a critically endangered species resident of interior northeastern Brazil. These macaws are metallic blue throughout with a slight green tinge and have yellow on the bare orbital ring and in a semi-circular patch at the base of its lower mandible. These beautiful birds inhabit caatinga thorn scrub vegetation with stands of licurí palm (Syagrus coronata) and pastures near sandstone cliffs which they use for nesting and roosting. Although this species had been known to science through traded birds, a wild population wasn't discovered until 1978. Since then, several smaller populations have been discovered, with a final population estimate of 140 birds being made in 1994. The Indigo Macaw may have never been common, but wide scale clearing or licurí palm stands and hunting for meat and for the pet trade have decimated populations of this bird. Drastic measures are needed to save this bird from following the same path as the similar, and now presumed extinct, Glaucous Macaw (Anodorhynchus glaucus). doi.org/10.2173/bow.indmac1.01

Ankarafantsika

Madagascar

This family of passeriformes, consisting of 4 species, all endemic to Madagascar, was entirely unknown to me until we began preparing for the visit to the country.

Ankarafantsika was a bit distant from the route we had initially planned, and the 10-hour journey each way represented an extra 2 days, one for going and another for returning, but it's well worth the effort.

However, the trip offers magnificent landscapes, and the journey ends up being quite enjoyable (despite the potholes on the road, and Ana letting her phone 'fly' while filming the scenery from the car window).

Moreover, we also managed to capture photos of three more species that can't be seen anywhere else in the world (except, perhaps, in zoos): the Vulnerable White-breasted Mesite, the Endangered Van Dam's Vanga, and the Critically Endangered Madagascar Fish-Eagle. All excellent reasons not to ignore this location! We managed to photograph all of them.

All my photos are now organized into sets by the country where they were taken, by taxonomic order, by family, by species (often with just one photo for the rarer ones), and by the date they were taken.

So, you may find:

- All the photos for this trip Madagascar (2023) (174)

- All the photos for this order PASSERIFORMES (3553)

- All the photos for this family Philepittidae (Filepitídeos) (4)

- All the photos for this species Philepitta schlegeli (3)

- All the photos taken this day 2023/11/19 (16)

These critically endangered white-backed vultures are a joy to be able to observe/photograph in any situation since there’s no telling how much longer they’ll still be around in the wild. In this specific shot, the birds are somehow managing to look affectionate and very intimidating all at the same time.

One way to find the CG point ie. Center of Gravity of a vehicle longitudinal axis is to drive it over the edge of a scarp so that the front and rear wheels are in the air while the bottom of the vehicle between the front and rear wheels leans on the ground. If the rear wheels sits on the ground, CG is further to the aft and you may push the vehicle forward. If the vehicle tips over the edge, then CG was closer to the front. Should it so happen, get another vehicle and try again...

"The Golden Knights are made up of several expert teams and skilled professionals who all play a critical role in the US Army’s success. This includes parachute teams, aircraft pilots, and even those behind-the-scenes handling jump logistics. Whether jumping out of planes going 120 miles per hour from 12,500 feet or landing with expert precision, they embrace the thrill of adventure and feel proud while doing it."

I snapped this photo shortly after this freefall parachuting tandem team jumped out directly under the midday sun. With a 1000mm focal length and atmospheric haze, sharpness was not to be, but to my delight, I captured part of the sundog and its rainbow.

Needless to say, their skills were amazing!

May each one of us take inspiration this Memorial Day from the patriotism of the brave soldiers who died for our country!

Hi all,

I was fortunate enough to see several critically endangered black rhinos on my last trip to Kenya.

Such an incredible experience!

This is a photograph taken in the Sir Edward Youde walk through aviary in Hong Kong. In the wild the Bali Myna is thought to have a population of just 50 to 100 birds and the majority exist on the Nusa Pendina Islands. Perhaps a thousand others are captive like this one. It is registered as being Critically Endangered and breeding programmes are in place that work towards the gradual reintroduction of the species.

The air is heavy, turgid with perpetual hatred and fulfillment of the prophecy.

The unseasonably warm weather in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States has delayed the peak autumn color change. Despite this, I was able to document some of the change during a trip through Ricketts Glen State Park in rural Pennsylvania, this weekend. Before today this region has had very little rainfall, so the falls are not roaring at their full grandeur, but I was quite pleased with what I was able to capture.

Inside the walls of The Old Joliet Prison is the hospital erected in 1895. I have framed the facade of the building with a broken out glass block window from close by. I'm sure many of the inmates felt they were framed, too. You can see the decay, but you can't smell how bad it was inside that building!!!

Stay well friends. You don't want to have to go to the hospital.
