Detail of a larger image. Guy sat on North Bridge in Edinburgh circa 2006.

The bridge gets a lot of suicides and suicide attempts, most of it spans Waverley Station; I've not heard of any in a while, which is good.

This guy was talked down by the police, thankfully.

The coronavirus pandemic brought with it new challenges, such as the lack of sufficient availability on the market of personal protective equipment.

In response to the needs and also to prepare for such situations in the future, rescEU’s reserve of capacities has been broadened in March 2020 to also include strategic medical equipment.

Hosted in EU Member States, this medical stockpile delivered results in just over a month since it was created. FFP2 and N95 protective masks were delivered to Italy, Spain, Croatia, Lithuania as well as to Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia and Serbia from the rescEU stockpile. In total, some 520,000 masks have now been delivered and more will follow.

“We left our families at home but we came here to help the European Union family. In these moments, it doesn’t matter if we are Romanians or Italians. We have to work together,” says Major Joe Stroescu, Head of the medical delegation of Romanian emergency rescue services.

The 15-strong team of Romanian doctors and nurses, who participated on a voluntary basis, arrived in Lecco, Italy, on 7 April 2020 for a deployment of 14 days, facilitated by the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism.

In addition to dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, Greece continues to face additional challenges and needs at its external borders, exceeding its capacity to address them.

90,000 items of assistance from 17 European countries were channeled to Greece after it activated the Mechanism on 02 March 2020 for material to assist its coronavirus prevention measures for migrants and refugees in the country.

The assistance provided consisted, amongst others, of sleeping bags, blankets, power generators, tents, and sanitation and health items.

Following the fire that affected the Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos in September 2020, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden sent tents, blankets, sleeping bags and mobile sanitary facilities to Greece. The assistance was co-financed by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

It’s not only in-kind assistance that can be mobilised through the Mechanism, but also emergency medical teams.

Following a request from Italy in March 2020 for assistance with medical staff, the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism supported the deployment of medical teams from Norway and Romania to northern Italy.

These teams were sent to reinforce hospitals treating patients struck with coronavirus. The Norwegian team arrived on 8 April 2020 for a twenty-day deployment, where it worked alongside the Italian medical personnel in Seriate, outside Bergamo.

Dragan has received a housing container equipped with a heater, offered by Romania and delivered through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

“Most probably I will live here [in the container] until the old house is demolished and a new one is built. At least I feel safe here,” says Dragan.

77-year-old Dragan lives in Glina, one of the most affected areas. His house was destroyed in the earthquake.

“I was on the road right outside my house when the earthquake happened. First, I heard a loud noise, followed by a huge tremor. I almost fell, I was just trying to keep my balance. When I looked up, I saw my house collapse before my eyes,” he says.

For EU citizens who found themselves stranded abroad when their flights were suspended and borders started to close, the EU provided support to help them reunite with their families.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, through its Civil Protection Mechanism and in coordination with Member States, the EU has helped Member States in flying back more than 82,000 EU citizens from Asia, Africa and Latin America to ensure that EU citizens who want to come back home can do so.

As of the beginning of September 2020, the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism facilitated close to 370 repatriation flights financed at 75 % of the transport costs.

Effective coordination also means making the best use of available resources, all the more essential in times of multiple challenges.

UNICEF, one of the EU’s implementing partners on humanitarian projects in Africa, was able to deliver vital supplies for their humanitarian projects on the outbound leg of repatriation flights from Denmark to Mali and from Belgium to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Both flights were co-financed under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, visited the hardest hit area immediately after the earthquake.

"I am very thankful to countries that have immediately rushed to Croatia's help in these difficult times. My thoughts are with all those affected, especially those who have lost loved ones, and with the brave first responders on the scene who are doing their best to help people in need," said Commissioner Lenarčič.

OSPREY volunteers document a NRDA [Natural Resource Damage Assessment} Team, deployed to obtain data from sediment samples from Apalachicola Bay. The Team's vessels, docked at the Apalachicola River Bridge Pier, consist of three state-of-the-art, custom SRHI vessels that are shallow draft, and rigged with heavy duty towing pylons. One of the crew told us these vessels, each powered by twin 200 hp Mercury OptiMax, can reach speeds of 60 MPH. Also aboard the vessels and in nearby vehicles are containers and equipment necessary to obtain sediment samples using NRDA prescribed protocols. The sampling data obtained will be used to help determine the extent of damage, if any, caused to Apalachicola Bay, as a result of the Summer 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. We hope they pilot those conspicuous red vessels safely, mind those pesky oyster bars everywhere they look, and do a meticulous job of obtaining and transporting those sediment cores to the laboratory!
