Sunset as seen from our hotel

We drove up into the hills of northern Crete, south-east of Heraklion, and around the town of Kastelli. This pretty little church was in the middle of nowhere, and bore a plaque saying it had been built in 2004. It wasn't open.

The beautiful (tiny) Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at the Monastery of Panagia Gouverniotissa was built in 961AD.

Inside the church of the Monastery of Panagia Gouverniotissa are these paintings dating from 1350-1375.

Psychro or Dikta Cave, reputed birthplace of Zeus. Apparently the mother of Zeus chose to have him in a damp, claustrophobic hole up an inaccessible mountain. Good choice.
