The river (Megalos Potamos) exits the Kourtaliotikos Gorge towards the beach at Preveli, near Plakias, Southern Crete
An amazing week in Crete, enjoying hot late september week, meeting amazing people, discovering beautiful places and trying out great food.
We drove up into the hills of northern Crete, south-east of Heraklion, and around the town of Kastelli. Just outside Kastelli was this apparent war memorial. We thought it might be for the Cretans who had taken part in the resistance following the German invasion in May 1941; however, the plaque was only in Greek, and the only date on it was 1970, so I don't know if it was erected in 1970 to commemorate the events of 1941-1945, or perhaps it commemorates something that happened to Crete or Greece in 1970?
