This was taken from our second story balcony at the end of a warm, clear and bright day. I usually don't get out of work early enough to catch a crescent moon with any type of color still in the sky but thank God for weekends!

Florence's iconic Puente Vecchio and its reflection in the Arno River appear to be oblivious to people in sidewalk cafes, who were enjoying a warm summer night with a crescent moon.

After a mostly gloomy day, the skies cleared and the sun came out. The day ended with this gorgeous sunset.

The silhouett is from the ancient Sättuna burial mound, the second largest of its kind in Östergötland.

Although rather modern excavations, the dating of the burial mound is still unknown.

It is always frustrating when we fly home from overseas knowing we will land in Boston and then have to drive all the way home to Maine!

The Wrekin is a large hill (1335 ft in elevation) and well known landmark in eastern Shropshire, England. It is to the right in this photo with the red light on top of it.

The night before we had come home after dinner to see the moon setting almost directly over the light on the Wrekin on a cloudless night. Unfortunately, by the time I got my camera and tripod, the moon had set completely. This night the moon sadly set in a different place and there was some cloud.

The moon rising from behind the tree line. I couldn't get the exact composition I wanted without power lines in the way, which I find hard to remove in low light photos. So I took two different shots from slightly different angles and composited them together to get the composition I was looking at without the power lines.

The Crescent Moon last night was large and actually red, but it did not last long as clouds obscured it. I could not get a better capture through my closed window; I would have liked to have been able to show the red and not just the glow around it.

"Over all of the hills

Peace comes anew,

The woodland stills

All through;

The birds make no sound on the bough.

Wait a while,

Soon now

Peace comes to you."

Somehow, this nightfall scene from Kirkjufellsfoss in West Iceland made me remember instantly that wonderful poem by Goethe, only that so far I have not found any translation into English that would do it justice. :(

Mono Lake is an ancient saline lake located at the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada in California. Home to trillions of brine shrimp, millions of birds, and world-famous tufa towers, its tributary streams also supply water to Los Angeles, nearly 350 miles to the south. After a successful legal fight stopped excessive diversions, ongoing advocacy has shown that balanced solutions mean enough water for both people and the environment.
