Design Thinking is the thinking framework of cross-cultural visual communication.

Beginnings are always messy.

~ John Galsworthy

Creativity is messy sometimes. Doing something that's never been done before takes a lot of experimentation. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't. Highly creative people are not bothered by the messiness because they know the messiness leads to great inspiration and discoveries. When faced with challenges, allowing things to get a little messy can result in insightful, inspired solutions.

People take the longest possible paths, digress to numerous dead ends, and make all kinds of mistakes. Then historians come along and write summaries of this messy, nonlinear process and make it appear like a simple, straight line.

Being crazy isn't enough.

~ Dr. Seuss

When brainstorming, it's common advice to go for wild and crazy ideas. People are often reluctant to share crazy ideas because they're, well, crazy. But it is often in the crazy ideas that the most creative, and even practical solutions lie.

Dreams are most often profound when they seem the most crazy.

Experiencing sadness and anger can make you feel more creative, and by being creative, you can get beyond your pain and negativity.

~ Yoko Ono

There are a lot of myths about creativity floating around out there. One of them is what I call "The Myth of the Melancholy". While it is true many great creative people throughout history have been very sad, there have also been plenty living on the sunnier side of the street.

Sadness certainly is not a requirement for creativity. In fact, being creative often reduces sadness because it helps you see the good alongside the bad. The focus on resolving a problem is much more hopeful than dwelling in the negative parts of it. Those melancholy creative geniuses we so highly admire were most likely using their creativity as a way to get through the pain.

Design Thinking results in design for emotions.

Design Thinking is creativity with a direction.

Curiosity is one key trait of creative people and creative thinking. To increase your own creativity, be curious and ask lots of questions.

Design Thinking unpacks the creative process.

Visuals to help flesh out the house and castle metaphors. You just have to ask the right questions: What are we afraid of in the basement? Who is our knight in shining armor?

A testament that poverty is not an excuse to creative thinking-- Street kids doing their very own dragon dance performance.

Design Thinking, through the acknowledgment of 'the map in not the territory', works to insure that only the most valuable generalizations are made from specific experiences, that only the most valuable differences are made in our representations, and that only the most valuable selections of the world are included.

Design Thinking transcends the language of cross-cultural visual communication.

Design Thinking progresses through the use of feedback loops.

Design Thinking is best expressed through the power of storytelling.

We made a trip to Barnes and Noble... my favorite bookstore.. Hope it survives a bit longer (as Borders we found out is closing....)......

This was a super-cool book I found to help one with improving creative thinking and being innovative. I am still looking through it. It's jam packed full of interesting ideas. I picked this up in hopes I will use some of these tips/strategies/exercises with students in India when I do some college interaction sessions.

I have already done some sessions on motivation and goal setting - see a video of my experience at Jai Bharath College. In the video, I talk about the session I did and some cross-cultural observations. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWumLxnhDlk

This is a synthesis image of some feedback I was given on my visual thinking work a while ago. The same format can be used for any number of topics or situations.

Colorful imagery comes from and leads to creative thinking. Believe it or not, even black and white images can be "colorful" if they are the other things on the list.
