Most people think coming up with ideas is what creativity is all about, but evaluating them is just as important. And it's equally important evaluation waits until you're trying to decide which one of your many ideas to use. If that final decision is made in a group, consensus can be hard to reach.

A simple visual like this one can make the whole process much more simple, enjoyable, and engaging. Everyone can see at a glance how bright the group as a whole thinks that idea really is.

Great ideas often come disguised as random thoughts. These seemingly random thoughts often come at the craziest times, like in the shower, driving, or during a walk.

They're really not so random, though. Focusing on something else for a while gives your brain a chance to sort through information stored in your memory. Deliberate time away from thinking about something is commonly called "incubation time".

For some quick and easy visual thinking practice simply choose a letter and see how many different ways you can make that letter in 2 minutes. Be sure to decide upper or lowercase before you get started. And remember, you don't have to like everything you come up with, just don't scribble anything out! Keep all your ideas visible because they might be useful later.

Concept Sketch. I am always trying to think up images that are unlike our 'learned' view of the world. Children do it all the time but they are often encouraged to learn to make their images into something they can recognise. I am trying to get back to that childish way of looking that has not yet destroyed the inherent view by projecting 'learned' ideas over it. I scribble on anything. This sketch is on card packaging that has the tape on it. Because my interest is in the idea and NOT making a piece of decoration to hang on a wall these quick works represent an attempt to learn to look at the world in an inherent 'animal' way.

Not trying so hard allows your brain to play with the challenge a bit and explore it from different perspectives. The ability to do this effectively is a key part of creativity and a skill highly creative people use deliberately, as well.

A good night's sleep also gives your memory a chance to search for any relevant info stored within and make new connections. The ability to make new and unusual connections is also a key part of creativity and something highly creative folks can do deliberately when needed.

More and more research is being done these days about the benefits and importance of play for people of all ages. Through play, many creative discoveries are made. So it's no surprise that highly creative people are generally playful folks.

There is no fear in play. No fear of failure, success, or being laughed at. This allows for a childlike freshness in thinking, which in turn, can lead to new insights and ideas.
