Mona Caron painted an amazing mural on Church Street at 15th Street. She is protecting it under a Creative Commons license.
Here's my photo on flickr of the entire mural.
Be sure to check out the section of Mona's website dedicated to the mural. You can see Market Street, and the railway trains that run along it, through different time periods and historical events:
the 1934 Longshoremen's strike, with the suppresion of the strikers by the police using teargas
the annual labor day parade held from the 1930s to the 1950s
a 1980s gay pride parade, complete with mini-Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence
the post-dotcom-present, with an awesome detail of members of the Billboard Liberation Front at work
the 2003 march against the Iraq War, with my favorite protest sign EVAH: "Blondes Against Dumb Wars"
and finally an awesome depiction of the future, with canals, zeppelins, solar-powered streetcars, and tons of little details.
Think of it as Where's Waldo for San Franciscans.
