Scholarship Fund Selects Five LAFD Merit Scholars For 2023 Grants by Los Angeles Fire Department

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Fire Department Scholarship Fund (LAFDSF) selected its Class of 2023 Merit Scholars, who were honored at a June 13, 2023 ceremony at the Los Angeles Fire Department's Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center in Elysian Park.

The LAFDSF, established in 2007 through private contributions, provides college tuition support to college-aged children of LAFD employees, and receives completed Merit Scholar Applications from approximately 40 qualified applicants each year. All applicants are evaluated on their academic, community service and extracurricular activities, as well as a formal interview by the independent LAFDSF Board.

The Los Angeles Fire Department has no direct influence on Merit Scholar selection.

The five recipients for 2023 will receive $10,000 for each year they are enrolled in college. At this week's ceremony, Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley was honored to present the first scholarship installments to:

· Bronson Bowman (Ocean View High School, Class of 2023)

· Katherine Cordaro (Great Oak High School, Class of 2023)

· Isabella Fortini (Adolfo Camarillo High School, Class of 2023)

· Ashlyn Quinn (South High School, Class of 2023)

· Lillie Vehling (Notre Dame High School, Class of 2023)

Hubble captured intriguing hints of interaction, if not full merging, between galaxies including quasar J0742+2704. There is evidence of a distorted tidal tail, or a streamer of gas, that has been pulled out by the gravity of a nearby galaxy. The presence of a ring galaxy also suggests interaction: The distinctive shape of ring galaxies are thought to form when one galaxy passes through another, redistributing its contents into a central core circled by stars and gas.

Astronomers will be doing further analysis of Hubble's detailed spectroscopic data, plus follow-up with other telescopes that can see different types of light, to confirm the distances of the galaxies and how they may be affecting one another.

Yahoo posted a cropped copy of Boylan Lanterns II Sunday night.

Problematic since i was unable to find a credit or a link back to my image, which violates Flickr's terms of use. Secondly, by any measure, Yahoo is a commercial site and my image is and has been, clearly marked as licensed for non-commerical, non-derivative, for attribute use.

Edit 11/01/2006: Yahoo has agreed to pay for commercial use of the image and apologized for the incident. Thanks to Heather Champ @ Flickr and Sam Silverstein @ Yahoo for their help in resolving the issue.
