Between Blossom and Gaze – Making Of
This image came to life not just through light and framing — but through Beata’s own touch. Before the first shot was taken, she gently adorned the camera lens with wildflowers. It wasn’t planned, it wasn’t directed — it was her idea, her way of shaping the moment.
What followed wasn’t just a portrait, but a shared creation. Beata stood before a lens that she had made her own, turning a technical object into something soft and alive. The floral detail became more than decoration: it became a symbol of trust, collaboration, and creative intuition.
“Between Blossom and Gaze” starts here — with a gesture that speaks quietly, but profoundly.
May Flowers Monster 3: So many things troubled Lizzy’s ever-thinking mind, which constantly twisted and turned from one thought to the next, like a roller coaster without a stop. Lizzy was an anxious lizard who needed to get away, if not for a day, to clear her head from her worries and woes. Thankfully she discovered that she didn’t have too far to go, after taking a walk to a local nature park. As she sat in a field of tall grass and wildflowers, she took a deep breath and slowly let out a big sigh, as she opened her heart and surrendered her worries, her anger, her fears and sadness to the universe, and felt a deep connection to the Earth, and all that is good. #art #artwork #illustration #drawing #watercolor #splotchmonster #splotchmonsters #splotchmonsterisland #monster #monsterart #lizard #nature #mayflowers #creativecollaboration #butterflies #bees #hummingbirds #springtime #artonpaper #dmvartist #artistoninstagram #artistsoninstagram #loudouncountyartist #loudounart #supportlivingartists #buyart #artforsale #showyourwork

This is the beginning of a three-person collaborative effort between myself, my friend David Cook and his student Mario, starting with some Splotch Forms and Splotch Monsters I made using watercolors, gouache paints, archival pens and markers.

These striking images were created with Phoebe Leighton when she joined The Photography Squad team with other dancers from Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
It’s been a real pleasure to work with such talented, creative individuals such as Phoebe.
The Photography Squad team will be confirming dates for these type of workshops (and others) soon.
"Splotch/Asterisk" is the result of a nearly five-month long creative collaboration between artists JJ Cromer and Stephen Loya, beginning in late August 2012 and ending in early January 2013. The final results are a dozen original works of which will be on exhibit at the Off-Rhode Studio Gallery in Washington, DC (reception: Saturday, February 9, 1-4PM, 2013).

This is the finished portion of my half of a mail-art collaboration with a friend in Pound, Virginia. I was compelled to draw an Alligator Snapping turtle (at least the front half of one), and I can't wait to see what my collaborator does with the rest of the space.

This is one of the six collaboration pieces I began with John Fogarty as part of our collaboration project. John began another 6, which I will add to, making that part 2 of a dozen altogether. For more of John's art, see here: www.flickr.com/photos/49963509@N00/
Here's one out of seven collaborative pieces I began, painting and drawing Splotch Monsters onto first, then sending them over to artist JJ Cromer, to work his highly detailed magic. Last week, they arrived back at my place where I'll soon add more work to then send them his way again to work on some more. As with five previous pieces from the series that he actually began first (there will now be twelve in all, so far), I decided to first have a little fun with Photoshop. This one in particular fit well with the Illustration Friday theme "Haunt" and looks good as a completed image.
You can find JJ's work here: www.jjcromer.com/

Another one done for a new collaborative project in the works. I’ll be working with a handful of remarkable creative folks from the dmv area to lend a hand to wildlife in the land of Oz. This one began with a Splotch Monster and was mailed to artist JJ Cromer who added his intricate line and collage work. JJ mailed it back to me and I added patterns in colored pencil. This will be sent back to JJ for him to work on the fourth and final phase of our mail art collaboration series.

Watercolor and archival pen on paper, glitched in Procreate. In early 2020 I created a handful of drawings/paintings of Australian wildlife threatened by the out-of-control fires that ravaged large swathes of the continent’s wilderness, in late 2019. I even collaborated with some excellent experimental musicians from the DMV area, to have them interpret one of the animals through music, whose work was to be a part of a compilation to help raise money for Australian wildlife organizations. Unfortunately, by the time the project was near completion, the Pandemic hit, deeming the project seemingly irrelevant. The reason I say “seemingly” is because the truth is, making any attempt to help wildlife on any part of the planet is never a lost cause, especially on a continent whose unique biodiversity is declining at a more rapid pace than anywhere else in the world. So, COVID be damned, the compilation will be released in some form later this year, be it in physical format, digital or both. In the meantime I went back and reworked the drawings in Procreate on my iPad, using the “glitch” function. In many ways, the glitchy manipulation of the imagery lends itself to the music, but also creates a visual context of the animals existing in a modern, human-dominated, non-natural world, extremely prone and vulnerable to natural (and not-so-natural) disasters. The “glitching” of the images themselves weren’t just a matter of pushing a button on a fancy app, but instead a very carefully controlled chaos, with lots of thought and consideration put into the placement and composition of things. Looking forward to posting more from the series soon! #art #artwork #animalart #wildlifeart #drawing #watercolor #painting #australianwildlife #dmv4au #creativecollaboration #glitch #glitchart #digitalart #Procreate #ipad #artistsoninstagram #dmvartist #makeart #showyourwork

Today, I'm learning to say goodbye in 15 languages.
(hagoonea', adieu, au revoir, paalam, farvel, zoi geen, alvida, ayo, dag, hwyl fawr, hyvästi, vale, veloma, khuda hafiz, slan, aavajo...)
I repeat each phrase to myself, in a whisper, then a shout. I sing each phrase in a frenzy, hoping you hear my lullaby of endings.
I'm saying goodbye to the chaos you brought me.
Here's the drawing of the Caribbean Scarlet Ibis I made for a collaborative art project with my wife, who would later paint it using watercolors.

John Fogarty began this image and sent it my way to add to it. Now it's going to go to Cat Gilbert in NYC, where she'll complete the collaboration, tentatively titled "Flowers and Monsters".

It turned out to be a beautiful day for art and music at 868 Estate Vineyards! This afternoon was the closing event for my Visual Music exhibit, and I was joined by Tristan Welch on ambient guitar, while doing a painting demo. I’m extremely thankful for Tristan driving all the way out west today, to join us, as much of the work in the show was the result of a recent collaboration between the two of us that will eventually be released as an album (stay tuned!). I’m also so grateful to Andrea Cybyk and Nancy Deliso for giving me the exhibit and allowing my work to grace the walls of 868. It has been an extremely positive experience that is ending with some recent exciting news that 21 of 26 pieces in the show were sold! It still hasn’t quite sunk in, I think. I also need to thank my always incredible wife Kris, who is always there for me, who documented today’s as well as yesterday’s event, and who keeps me going when I need it the most. Finally, I can’t forget to thank everyone who came out to support me from near and far, and even via social media - as I will always say, it is never taken for granted. ❤️ #art #music #868estatevineyards #creativecollaboration #ambientmusic #abstractart #chromesthesia #artistsoninstagram #dmvartists #loudouncountyartist #abstractpainting #contemporaryart
