The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAF)S East African regional program has selected six sites to test interventions that address risks related to climate change and variability. Featured here is the Lower Nyando site in Kenya and ongoing activities related to making baskets as a way to diversify livelihoods and income sources. This could help create resilience to climate change in the long term. Photos. K. Trautmann.

We are creating a Time Machine at ‘Pataphysical Studios, our art collective in Mill Valley, where surrealism meets the maker culture. Our Time Machine will take you on wild rides through time, to meet characters from the past, present and future.
On a balmy summer afternoon, we gathered in the art garden to create some of its parts: dragons of change to guide you on your journey; an art priestess in her prehistorical cave; a pataphysical flag on a magic pole; a painted gear holding the secret of life; a cactus of the future strolling by in stop-motion.
We then showed our Time Machine to young Dr. Delia, who gave it the two-year old test, pushing all of its buttons to jump back in time to the age of dinosaurs, her favorite scene. I’m pleased to report that we passed the audition. :)
This was also a great opportunity to celebrate our good friend Dr. Rindbrain’s un-birthday, which we kept low-key at his request. Long live the young at heart!
We are recruiting experienced artists and makers to help create the Time Machine through art, multimedia, theater and technology. Please contact us if you are interested and live in the Bay Area. We will give a few private demos in the fall for folks who are ready to get their hands dirty with us.

If you want you can add the back wheel. It just slides in and locks, and is removed the same way. I found it added some jitter to the back end when I had the penny ballast in.

So the other day, I showed where to find the App Store located on Macs. Well, today, I want to show how it's possible to create a self contained app, which actually shows up in your Dock using the iPhone App Store logo and everything, as you can see in the pic above.
The first thing you need to do is download Fluid:
Fluid is a cool free app that allows you to make apps out of web pages. You'll also need the iPhone App Store icon. Joshia Della at DeviantArt has one here:
joshladella005.deviantart.com/art/iPhone-icons-91004527
Okay, now that you have downloaded all the necessary components, open up Fluid and you should see the same dialog as above. First, paste in the url of Apple's download page. In this case it is:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/
Paste that in to the "URL" dialog. Next, you're going to fill in the "Name" dialog with "App Store" or "Mac App Store" or whatever name you want to give to this app.
Leave the "Location" dialog at its default of "Applications." Okay, in the "Icon" dialog, navigate to the PNG folder located inside the icon folder provided by Joshia Della and click on the "Applications" icon or whatever icon you prefer.
Now click "Create" and Fluid will ask you if you want to "Launch Now." Go ahead and click it because there's one more thing you need to do to make sure this is a self-contained app.
Go to the Preferences menu in your newly created app and go to the "Advanced" dialog. Inside, you will click on "Allow Browsing to Any Url." This option allows you to open up any link in the App itself. Otherwise, whenever you hit a link, it will automatically open up Safari or Firefox or whichever your default web browser might be.
That's all. Enjoy your new Mac App Store.
ProTip: When choosing icons for Fluid always use PNG files instead of JPEG. PNG files allow Alpha Channels, which is a big deal when part of the icon needs to be transparent. JPEGs don't allow this.

Playing around trying to make some storyboard templates. This one was inspired by Joyce Smith's hopscotch storyboard. Not sure if the ratios are right on mine??
I may just have to break down and buy a few templates from someone who knows what the heck they're doing!

Kansas students create art for Dream Rocket Project, The Associated Press
Art created by Kansas students will be among those wrapped around a 365-foot replica of the Saturn V rocket at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. A visiting assistant professor at Washburn University helped elementary students from Rossville and St. Mary create 550 pieces of artwork for the Dream Rocket Project. A news release from the Topeka university says the Saturn V rocket will be wrapped with more than 8,000 pieces of art in 2014. Beforehand, all submissions are being displayed in venues such as libraries, schools and museums. A show is planned at the Wamego Public Library in April.
The young artists submitting their work come from hundreds of cities across the United States and other countries. © 2012 Wichita Eagle and wire service sources. All Rights Reserved. www.kansas.com Read more here: www.kansas.com/2012/02/22/v-print/2225431/kan-students-cr...

Inflation is an increase in money supply, which causes a decrease in the purchasing power of the currency and consequently a rise in the price of goods and services.
In 1980, 1 Zimbabwe dollar converted to about 1.59 U.S. dollars. Since that time, Magabe has allowed the Zimbabwe Reserve Bank to create money at will (inflationary). Current estimates put Zimbabwe's annual inflation rate at 89.7 sextillion percent. That's an 89.7 followed by 21 zeroes. It is estimated that the price of goods and services doubles every 15.6 hours.
In March of 2008, a dinner cost $1.2 billion (receipt, waiter carrying away tray of money) in Zimbabwe. On July 19, 2008 the Zimbabwe Reserve bank introduced a $100 billion bank note. That is what is pictured here. Eleven days after issuance of this note, the Zimbabwe Reserve bank redenominated the Zimbabwe dollar such that $10 billion would become $1. They essentially removed 10 zeroes. Therefore, this note is only worth about $10 now.
As of this moment 1 U.S. dollar would convert to 15,602 Zimbabwe dollars after the redenomination. Had the Zimbabwe dollar not been redenominated, 1 U.S. dollar would convert to 156 quadrillion Zimbabwe dollars.
************************************************************
You have probably noticed that the U.S. economy is struggling; the price of goods and services are going up, people are losing their jobs and homes, small and large businesses are going bankrupt-- we are experiencing stagflation. Now ask yourself this. What has the U.S. government's 'solution' been?
The answer is inflation. The Federal Reserve Bank is creating more money for banker bailouts, auto bailouts, income tax rebate checks, etc. The Fed is lower lending rates again a la Alan Greenspan, whom was the catalyst for this bubble in the first place. The U.S. spends $1 trillion on defense-related purposes. The U.S. is $10 trillion in debt. The U.S. owes $60 trillion in entitlements. The U.S. borrows money from other countries in exchange for Treasury Bonds, and if foreign countries stop buying U.S. dollars and starts spending their reserves in the U.S., Americans will see the price of everything sky rocket.
Inflation is evil. It is created by the Federal Reserve Bank. And it cannot be fixed with more inflation. Zimbabwe is a very recent example of this and yet the U.S. is following the same slippery path to economic destruction.
