The bridge is named after Enneüs Heerma, who served as chairman of the Christian Democratic Appeal, a city councilor in Amsterdam and twice as state secretary under Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers. Alongside the Nescio Bridge, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that connects IJburg with East Amsterdam, it is one of the district's most famous landmarks.
The steel suspension bridge with a length of 230 meters, a width of 38 meters and a height of 26 meters is used to support a traffic road and a light rail line. It is the main connection between IJburg and the A10 and can be reached by tram 26, the IJtram, from Amsterdam Centraal station.
Completed in 2001, the bridge was designed by Grimshaw Architects. The classic gables of Amsterdam canal houses inspired the arches and side gables and the wave patterns reference water. The segmented appearance is modeled on the skeleton of a crab. Due to the shallow water depth at the bridge site, it was not possible to move the pre-assembled bridge arches into position using floating cranes during construction. The problem was solved by using pontoons and crawler cranes.

Getting ready to install the roof. The crane is here now to do the heavy lifting.
So basically I decided to build a crane today. I already had alot of these parts from a long while ago to make something like this but never got around to it. The boom will be a bit longer still but I can't find the rest of my technic 2l axles to join the pieces on at the moment. I really need to do some sorting again 😣
august 14, 2024, the first pick of the First Ave/street bridge.
after being stymied by lift problems: on the south end the truss wouldn't release from the wall pier until a jack was used and on the north end something had to be cut off which was keeping the bridge from turning; finally at noon we had liftoff.
my eyes filled with tears as she turned slowly in the air before being gently lowered to the ground.
not sure how many different angles y'all want to see so we'll start with just one. we have a few. :-)
Over a year ago Colonial bridge just north of Grant on the MQT was wrecked due to a car going over the side and hitting the supports for the bridge. After months and months of figuring out if the railroad or the county owned the bridge, work has commenced on the removal of the classic wood bridge. Only minor work has started such as tree removal and prep work for the new higher and wider bridge to be built in its place but a Manitowoc crawler crane showed up within the last week or two to start the removal process. With knowledge that the crew would be running to White Cloud to tie down I made a late night trip down to the bridge to capture the northbound Z151 train making its way down Newaygo hill and under the currently still standing bridge as a gentle rain starts to fall, luckily it waited till after I was all packed up to start down pouring. It was rather eerie sitting down here in the cut while waiting, with all the warm rain we had during the day and quickly dropping temperatures fog came and went the entire with accompanied by one of the darkest nights I have ever been track side and the very distinctive low rumble of 645's that was heard for well over 20 minutes before the horn could even start to be heard made for an interesting wait.
Europe, Portugal, Leiria district, Nazaré, Harbour, Breakwater, giant caltrops, crawler crane (uncut)
Near the harbour we encountered the breakwater strengthening works. I couldn't resist these giant concrete caltrops and heavy crawling crane. Together they formed a quintessential modernist scene and it presented a great opportunity to go hard core on you again ;-)
