"Craig Andrew" , Winnyfold, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Near Dinas Mawddwy.

I know this image probably looks posed, but it wasn’t. Craig was a workman helping to dismantle the tents etc. after the Manchester Jazz Festival in Albert Square. When I decided to take the picture Craig was looking straight ahead and taking a drink of water from the jug, as I pressed the shutter he turned his head to look straight at me; too late, the image was taken. He gave me a thumbs up and then came over to see what I had shot and asked what I was going to do with the image; I told him I would probably put in on Flickr, he smiled and then left. A little while later I caught up with him and asked if he would like a copy; he said "that would be great". I took his email address and sent a copy to him; he replied and was thankful for me doing so. This was the only shot I got of him. The image was shot through a wire mesh fence.

In all the candid pictures I have taken he is the first person ever to approach me and ask to see what I had taken; good for him, people often look and glare at me but never say anything. If people did object, obviously I would delete the image in front of them….!

Small train for Craig. The weekly local along the Craig branch rolls north with a few hoppers, just approaching a busy Steamboat Springs.

View from the Turnberrry Lightohouse coasstline towards Ailsa Criag which is volcanic island half a billion years old, Ailsa Craig has borne witness to countless events throughout history and prehistory from its station in the Firth of Clyde. Once a haven for Roman Catholics during the 15th century Scottish Reformation, the island was quarried for its rare stone in the 19th and 20th centuries. Long ago disused and utterly uninhabited, Ailsa Craig still stands eleven miles out to sea.

Craig yr Aderyn is an isolated hill in the county of Gwynedd, that juts out into the Dysynni Valley. It rises to a height of 258 metres (846 ft) above sea level on the south bank of the River Dysynni, near Llanfihangel-y-Pennant. The summit is rocky and the lower slopes are clad in tussocky grassland, heather and bracken. The two prominent faces of the hill are known locally as 'Y Palis Mawr' and 'Y Palis Bach' (English: the large stockade and the small stockade).

The site is owned by the Snowdonia National Park Authority, lies entirely within the Craig yr Aderyn SSSI, and is named after the large number of birds, such as the Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), that roost and nest on the peak. It is 2 miles (3.2 km) from the Cardigan Bay coast. The hill is used by a number of species of bird for breeding. The largest inland breeding site for cormorants in Wales is here. Other birds nesting here include the barn owl, little owl, peregrine falcon, redstart, wheatear and common linnet.

Today I received news that completely gutted me. An old friend of mine had died.

To say Craig Percival was an extraordinary human being and a great athlete would be an understatement. I couldn't begin to put into words or a simple photograph anything that would come close. He was a truly inspiring individual who will be so sorely missed by so many.

Aside from the many Ironman and Ultraman competitions he competed in, his greatest sporting achievement was completing 8 ironman challenges in 8 states in 8 days earlier this year. He did this selflessly to raise $80,000 for the John Maclean Foundation.

Finishing one full marathon is extraordinary, but finishing 8 in 8 days in 8 states is nothing short of superhuman.

The video in this link tells that story so well: www.nolimitsendurance.com.au/8in8in8

And this tribute from Chris Riordan says it all in a way that I just can't right now:

He injured his knee in this epic challenge, and it was the complications from the operation to repair his knee that took his life so unexpectedly.

My thoughts are with his wife Lindell and his two young children, Sam and Sienna. He was a wonderful family man. Rest in peace Craig, I can't believe you are gone.

A fundraising effort is now underway to help Lindell and her children - Craig was the sole money earner. A very worthy cause:

A little abstract type shot of Ailsa Craig from Arran...not sure if I like or not...

Craig yr Aderyn (Bird Rock).

I took this panoramic photo of the 12,007 foot Mount Craig, aka "Mount Baldy," and the Colorado River while hiking the East Inlet Trail near Grand Lake, Colorado. I used a Canon 6D and a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens.

Perched atop Mt Stirling, Craig’s Hut takes in stunning views of the ranges. First built as a set for The Man From Snowy River film, the hut is now an iconic landmark and a symbol of Australia’s settler history.

Drive, horse-ride, mountain-bike or hike… but however you get to the hut, make sure to pack a picnic. Or for a bit of luxury you can book in with a local tour company and enjoy a catered feast complete with High Country wines and mountain tales. If you’re willing to stick around until dark, you’ll also be treated to the starry spectacle of the Milky Way uninterrupted by city lights.

I spend a fair amount of time in galleries but don't often take photos of other peoples work and am not readily inclined to show those I've shot. This is largely because, personally, I get confused by photographs taken of a third persons creation: I don't know if I'm responding to the photo or the thing in the photo. I am easily confused. I like this image though and recognize that most of the glory goes to Craig Murray-Orr whose work this is.

Probably the prettiest of the Elan valley dams (as it says on the Elan Valley website www.elanvalley.org.uk/), I haven't seen this one overtopping before.

Photo of a watervole just checking if it's still raining before coming out, as you can see the rain droplets on the water, and he stayed in his hole, hope you like it, i'm still laughing, such beautiful animals.

The James Craig is always a welcome sight in Tasmanian waters and is here again for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
