dont worry too much & let the pieces fall as they may, it will be kinda a surprise how the final pattern will turn out.
take some wispy type pieces in a different color and wrap loosely around the outside. this is the fun part.

rub... rub.. rub... yesterday i was dancing and doing palates while making soaps. 2 birds with one stone!
now i put the soap into a cut tube of nylon stocking. this keeps the wool fibers held together for when you start to felt. if not it would kind of a giant hairball mess that would slide off the soap.
you can also alternate soaking the wool in really cold water along with the hot water. the cold water "shocks" the wool and helps it shrink down.
now when some wool start to pull on the outside of the stocking, you can take it off and start to work the wool itself. i find the soaps are finished when you dunk the soap and it stays felted, not plump up like a sponge.
*tip - watch out for square corners! round soaps work better, but if not, then i add some extra wool around the sides to cover the corners.
lather it up by working and rubbing in hands. this is the meditative part....dunk...rub...dunk...rub...
rub, rub, rub... i also use a silicone pot holder i have, but anything with ridges will do (the professionals use washboards). this is an optional step, but it does make the wool felt faster.
