Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania

A view of Tasmania's famous Cradle Mountain from a walking track near Dove Lake, Spring 2016.

This was one of the few dry moments when I was there - the temperature wasn't far above freezing the entire time, despite Summer only being a month away.

Long Exposure of Cradle Mountain while we could still see it.

Cradle Mountain is a mountain in the Central Highlands region of Tasmania, Australia. The mountain is situated in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

At 1,545 metres (5,069 ft) above sea level, it is the fifth highest mountain in Tasmania,[1] and is one of the principal tourist sites in Tasmania, owing to its natural beauty. The Cradle Mountain is composed of dolerite columns, similar to many of the other mountains in the area.

Not much of a shot, but I thought some of you might be interested in the lighting (which is not subtle, but my first attempt with off camera light in near total darkness). The mid ground is lit with a Manfrotto Lumimuse 6. I sat it on the ground at an angle of about 60 degrees. The foreground is lit with my LED headlight (which I forgot I'd left on). The colour temperature and power differences are obvious.

A little Fuller's Teasel bud in the warm, Summer rain last week. I'm running out the door but will catch up with your wonderful streams later this afternoon. :)

Exploration is Curiosity

A bit of nice morning light over the pond at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania.

Cradle Mountain is one of Tasmania's most visited places, but it wasn't that popular on the day I visited last week as it was 4 degrees Celsius with hail, very light snow and low cloud cover keeping people away.

I made it out between hail storms to try and at least capture something interesting, with most of the mountain visible along with the boat shed on Dove Lake.

Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake, Central Highlands of Tasmania. A popular destination for walkers, photographers and nature lovers, but still a place of wild and rugged beauty.

Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. We arrived quite late in the afternoon, but took advantage of the good weather. Just as well, because it rained for the next couple of days!

A shot from Marions Lookout. Well worth the hike if you get teh chance.

Cradle Mountain, Tasmania.

Third time lucky - after 2 previous visits to this beautiful part of Tasmania, I finally got a dawn shot with no clouds and a very still Dove Lake. It was however -2C at dawn but worth it for the shot.

If you are interested in seeing more of this stunning place, the Google Maps street-view feature will actually take you right around the whole Dove Lake walk. Well worth a look.

Original shot was taken with a Pentax Z-70 SLR. Lens was a Sigma 28-80mm zoom. Film was possibly Fuji Sensia 100.

This colour slide was scanned with a Canon R10, Canon RF 24-240 zoom lens with Nisi close up attachment. Cool white LED backlighting.

This landscape made me consider the place where time begins and ends. As I sat here and witnessed opposing forces at work, I could only think that this is how it all began and how it might end in the future in a beautiful dance.

I captured this along the Green River in Moab, Utah.

If you use the word cradle as a verb, it means to hold something carefully showing you value it and want to protect it. Instead of "captured" or "trapped" or "caught", "cradled" is the word that came to my mind when I saw this leaf held in the long fingers of a yew.

Kofi Annan did not use the word cradle here but it would have fit.

"the Earth is not ours, but a treasure we hold in trust for future generations.”
