Cotoneaster
For Macro Mondays - Leaf
I spotted this old leaf on our Cotoneaster with new foliage starting to unfurl.
The old leaf is approximately 1 inch in length.
Happy Macro Monday!

Bright red berries, about the size of a fingernail; might be Cotoneaster shrub.
Reminder: In January 2022 I asked for help, and a Flickr support hero removed both of my accounts from the Explore algorithm. I feel more relaxed ;-)

This is the fruit of the cotoneaster plant. Not edible by us photographers but essential food for birds as winter approaches. You can see the first signs of this on the leaves already changing colour.
Have a super Saturday SOS fans.

Tangara labradorides labradorides
(Metallic-green tanager / Tangara verdinegra)
Metallic-green Tanagers inhabit humid montane forests in the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They are mostly blue-green in color, although strongly they appear to be blue or green can change, depending upon light conditions.
Their diet consists almost entirely of arthropods and fruits. Metallic-green Tanagers are usually found in pairs or small groups and often join flocks consisting of multiple tanager species.
There are two recognized subspecies of the Metallic-green Tanager (Storer 1970):
-labradorides Boissinneau 1840; type locality Santa-Fé de Bogota [Colombia]
Occurs in western and central Colombia and in western Ecuador (Storer 1970, Hilty and Brown 1986, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001).
-chaupensis Chapman 1925; type locality Chaupe, Cajamarca, Peru
Occurs in southeastern Ecuador and in northern Peru (Storer 1970, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001, Schulenberg et al. 2007).

Cotoneaster Berries
Lot of red on our Cotoneaster plant now.
No insects to be seen in the garden today, it is very cold with a few light, misty showers of rain.
“I have great faith. I have hope. I have love. I have so many things for which I am grateful, but I always felt something was missing within me. A gaping hole that could not be filled no matter how hard I tried. Last night I was given the gift of grace and all doubts were swept away and the peace that now resides in me is as unexpected as it is inexplicable. I don't question it. It just is and I am thankful. Now I know truly what it means to be in the light and I never want to return to the darkness. I tried to attain this state of grace so many times, but it cannot be forced or falsified; It required no effort. All I did was let go and the transition was as easy as stepping from one room into another. There is no fear; no anxiety; no pain.” - AP
“A miracle is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A miracle is when one plus one equals a thousand.”

GRACE – THE WHISTLIN' DONKEYS
A lady full of grace
is a beautiful creature to behold
she radiates the milk of human kindness
she is the greatest story every told
her eyes light up the darkness
her smile encompasses all
and in the depths of Winter
she warms the coldest soul
her step is light upon the ground
her footprint is so small
but her heart is big and full of love
she is the greatest of us all
graceful; elegant; sublime
she lights the way to goodness
she's pleasant; charming all the time
the epitome of beauty and gracefulness
I've only bathed within the light
of two people who were like her
I felt the gentle touch of angels
the peace descend upon me
last night a strange thing happened to me
the worst thing in many ways
I fell into a trance of sorts
felt a calmness in a daze
I thought it was a kind of seizure
the kind that bad news brings about
but the Lord works in mysterious ways
and he let me know what it was all about
I thought the peace would go away
perhaps in a little while
but it is still with me on this bless-ed day
a miracle lights up my inner smile.

Here's the last of my non-native birds from recent outings to the LA Arboretum. The bulbul was introduced from Asia and can be found in "wooded suburban habitat in Southern California" (from my Sibley guide). I usually see this bird there, but usually way up high in the trees. Not so on this morning as it perched on this Cotoneaster shrub. Not only are the red "whiskers" clear, but you can even see the red undertail coverts too. Definitely worth a couple of clicks for large.
Spectacular bright red berries on a cotoneaster tree near the Engineering Annex at the University of Adelaide.
Cotoneasters are very popular garden shrubs, grown for their attractive habit and decorative fruit. They’re also popular in the cultivation of bonsai trees, thanks to their hardiness, ability to fruit and flower, and their small leaf size.
…… This Cotoneaster was full of Red Berries too but the Blackbirds have been having a feast on them - bless their little hearts!! So thats my #342 shot of the day. Alan:-)

For me the title says it all. Today I was messaged while at work by a friend from over the road that my neighbour cut down the Cotoneaster that is on my land but outside my boundary fence. The tree has give us so much pleasure with the birds that have landed in it and the Bees and other pollinators that have filled it during the Spring. I am personally gutted by this and there will be no further Redwing, Fieldfare or Waxwing for me to take shots of .
I am deciding what action to take, but any action taken will not replace the tree.
