San Jose, Costa Rica

Whilst a neolithic 'tension boat' of leather hull, pole frame, weave, keel weight and ballast might have had an underside landing protection of, let's imagine, strung cork bark; the wild coast of the Costa Brava in Spain would remain a sharp toothed boarder capable of ripping through skins with the slightest swell. Assured sandy departure points and wide protected arrival targets would appease the worries of inexperienced travelers and attract the boats of regular fishermen. Technical fishermen with local knowledge and an eye for the weather might still have been a feature of the many smaller bays and coves, with the myriad crevasses and cracks, underhangs and drop-offs providing anchorage for multiple niche and a large surface area for algae keen to convert the rays of the sun into desaturated colour. Complex crashing waves spun by the rocks increase the water's oxygen content, favoring shoals of sardine and anchovy, with octopus, turbot, red snapper and rock fish mixing in the baskets of the coastal fisherman's surprises.

The prehistory of man was measured along kilometers of littoral with inclusions in land being less frequent in the build up to the neolithic. A river bank will always find a confluence and quickly attract knowledge of known destinations; a sea shore has but two obvious directions with stories collecting from each. A river always flows to the sea (Botswana apart...) and both sea and river attract plants and animals that can be perceived as food. For those people who walked along bank and shore, the world may have been split between trajectories where you asked 'what are the people and places like inland from this point' and the rarer trajectories where people stopped to ask 'What are the people and places like along the water edge out of sight from my path?'. The first category is easily the most common and is made up of cliffs, shores, beaches and meanders, banks and inland cliffs that roll aside the water within the eye sight of travelling voices. The second category is rarer but still very much part of the geography of man and is when a coast becomes gnarled and ragged, a river slips underground or through a slot in a mountain or where water's boundary becomes a long and tortuous detour by contrast to parallel inland plateaus and contours. When on inland paths, you have to know that you are following the sea or river without seeing it with your own eyes. The wild coast of the Costa Brava is often of the latter category and the people and their places will have made this distinction.

The tawny coster (Acraea terpsicore[1]) is a small, 53–64 millimetres (2.1–2.5 in), leathery, winged butterfly which is common in grassland and scrub habitats. It belongs to the Nymphalidae or brush-footed butterfly family. It has a weak fluttery flight. It is avoided by most insect predators. This species and the yellow coster (Acraea issoria) are the only two Indian representatives of the predominantly African tribe Acraeini.

Stretching along the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, the Limon province is a magical mixture of mangroves, pristine beaches and tropical forests. These picturesque lowlands sustain a rich natural beauty that conservationists are working hard to protect. .

Here one finds sprawling banana plantations and thick, tropical jungle bordering the lofty Central Mountains. The Afro-Caribbean influence is evident everywhere, from the lyrical speech and reggae rhythms to the colorful wooden bungalows that line the laid-back, coastal villages.

Almost a third of the province s sparse population live in and around the capital-port city of Puerto Limon, or simply Limon. Whether you 're looking for the distinctive local culture or the blossoming ecotourism industry, just ask, "Wh'appen, man?". Someone is sure to tell you, with a smile.
