The orange cosmos is becoming increasingly popular for its ease of growth, spectacular flowers and attractiveness to butterflies. Orange cosmos has rich green feathery foliage that is coarser than that of the common cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) but is just as pretty.
Depending on variety and conditions, yellow cosmos will grow anywhere from 1 to 7 ft in height. Whatever the height, each plant will produce quantities of solitary, bowl-shaped yellow to orange flowers that are 2-3 in (in diameter). 'Bright Lights' is a popular collection of single and double selections in colors that range from bright canary yellow to orange to a beautiful dark mahogany. Cosmos sulphureous is native to Mexico.

This cosmos flower (Cosmos sulphureus) is a very pretty sight by itself, but also provides a habitat for insects, even though it is an invasive species in Japan. From my website at www.focx.de

Flower of Cosmos sulphureus (Asteraceae), planted as part of landscaping along the Ross River at Annandale (Townsville, Australia)
Most of my cosmos came out yellow, rather than orange -- most of my African Daisies, too. There's nothing wrong with yellow; it's just not the colour I was after.
So I'm very pleased with this cosmos.
Despite being tucked away in a corner, it's blooming its little head off, and it's produced an orange to rival the calendulas, California poppies, and black-eyed susan vines.
I'd already decided this was the year I was going to try saving seeds. Now I'm hoping that by selectively saving from the most orangey-flowering plants, I can get more of this colour in my garden next year.
I found this beautiful cosmos flower among petunia plants in privet garden which grown quickly and successfully in our desert dry region.
