Spanish postcard by F.A.G. Photo: Cosmofilm. Sara Montiel and Maurice Ronet in Carmen de La Ronda (1960).

Spanish singer and actress Sara Montiel died today. She was 85. Sara, also known as Sarita and Saritísima, was a much-loved and internationally known name in the Spanish-speaking cinema. In the late 1950s, Montiel achieved the status of mega-star in Europe and Latin America with El Último Cuple / The Last Torch Song (1957). This film and La Violetera / The Violet Peddler (1958) netted the highest gross revenues ever recorded for films made in the Spanish-speaking film industry. Montiel was also the first woman to distill sex openly in Spanish cinema at a time when even a low-cut dress was not acceptable.

Popular, French leading man Maurice Ronet (1927-1983) was also a director and screenwriter. In the 1950s and 1960s, the smooth and slick actor was a favourite of such influential directors as Louis Malle and Claude Chabrol.

Suave and sophisticated French actor Charles Boyer (1899-1978) began his career in French silent films and in 1936 he became an international star with his role in Mayerling opposite Danielle Darrieux. His long career earned him the title of 'the last of the cinema's great lovers'.

French actress and singer Danielle Darrieux (1917) is an enduringly beautiful, international leading lady. From her film debut in 1931 on she progressed from playing pouty teens to worldy sophisticates. In the early 1950s she starred in three classic films by Max Ophüls, and she played the mother of Catherine Deneuve in five films!

Italian director Vittorio De Sica (1901-1974) was a leading figure in the neorealist movement. De Sica directed 34 feature films, for which he won numerous international prizes including four Oscars. As an actor he made more than 150 films and is best known for his bright and charming roles in earthy comedies opposite sex goddesses Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren.
