Photography by & Β© William 'PoPsie' Randolph 1966 from the ebook 'Heavy Soul'. Jimi was a sideman in King Curtis' band and here they're backing Little Esther Phillips. They also backed Percy Sledge ~ for whom this Atlantic Records reception was primarily held ~ and Wilson Pickett. .
He got up from his seat at one point during Grandma's Hands and the documentary directors thought, oh he is going to the bathroom. Bill Withers is a private man who does not have the "talent" of wanting to be known and seen in the spotlight. It was hard enough to get him to the concert. He wasn't going to sing.
He got up from his front row seat, walked across the front of the bandshell and then no warning just walked himself on stage. Told Cornell Dupree he couldn't leave him up there alone and sang. I broke out of my shell and with my crap point and shoot bumrushed the stage to take a picture or two... and then I stood there in awe, being in instead of capturing the moment. Twas glorious...
Later on in the evening his daughter who sang at the concert as well was closing the evening (or so she thought) Bill was walking around the stage individually thanking every single person on stage who had been involved (and there was a goodly sum) after with his humour he said his thanks to everyone here and said for $117.49 we can do this at your house too. Then he put his daughter on the spot and had her sing Just the Two of Us, and she said... I just want to have it known I don't need the money but I bet he wouldn't be able to keep off this stage and he wasn't. And we were all blessed for that, cause it really was a memorable experience.
If you don't know what kind of honour and joy it was to see that, might I suggest you hit that little red button in the corner of your screen. It is marked with an X.
While King Curtis and Champion Jack have the headlines, I actually sought out this LP due to Cornell Dupree on guitar. This would be from 1971.
