Copenhagen - Denmark

view from the Tower of Christiansborg

Christiansborg Slot (Christiansborg Palace) is a palace and government building on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It is the seat of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget)] the Danish Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court of Denmark. Also, several parts of the palace are used by the Danish monarch, including the Royal Reception Rooms, the Palace Chapel and the Royal Stables.

The palace is thus home to the three supreme powers: the executive power, the legislative power, and the judicial power. It is the only building in the world that houses all three of a country's branches of government. The name Christiansborg is thus also frequently used as a metonym for the Danish political system, and colloquially it is often referred to as Rigsborgen ('the castle of the realm') or simply Borgen ('the castle.

The present building, the third with this name, is the last in a series of successive castles and palaces constructed on the same site since the erection of the first castle in 1167. Since the early fifteenth century, the various buildings have served as the base of the central administration; until 1794 as the principal residence of the Danish kings and after 1849 as the seat of parliament.

Copenhagen by night on a quiet Monday. The Royal Opera House is on the left, whereas you find Magasin, a major department store on the right.

The location is Kongen's Nytorv, which means literally the King's New Square.

The Kastrup Sea Baths, situated off-shore in the Øresund Sound, has great views of the Saltholm Island and Sweden.

This is an architectural pearl and a truly magical place that offers good swimming opportunities with protection against the wind.

Rundetårn Copenhagen - Denmark

No lift, no stairs!

Rundetårn (The Round Tower) is a 17th-century tower in Copenhagen. Instead of stairs, a 7.5-turn spiral ramp forms the only access way to the tower top observatory as well as the Library Hall and the Bell-Ringer's Loft.

This design was chosen to allow a horse and carriage to reach the library and observatory. So you can go rollerblading to the top of the tower.

Lined on both sides with colourful houses, this 300m long canal, known as the New Harbour, was dug by soldiers between 1671 and 1673 and was designed to enable ships to deliver merchandise into the centre of Copenhagen. Today stylish yachts and old wooden boats are moored at many of the quays. Filled with bars, cafés and restaurants, this place is now one of the city's most well-known districts and is especially popular on warm summer evenings. It is difficult to believe that the area was once notorious for its seedy pubs and brothels packed with sailors.
