A few days ago I found this lovely cuckoo bee sleeping on the lavender flowers in the garden. As it turned out (thanks to the specialists of the FB group Insecten determinatie), this was a specimen of Thyreus orbatus - (Vlekkenbij in Dutch). This is a very rare species to our country and it had never been documented in our province. Last catch in Belgium seems to date back from 1955. Conditions for a photo were very difficult with heavy clouds and strong winds so I ‘m rather pleased with this (fairly) decent shot in the end. This animal, I guess it was the same specimen, hung around for about a week but I wasn’t able to have another go.

In Rotterdam, the high rises seem to sprout from each other ;-) In the foreground is a 50s functionalist 'wederopbouw' residential building (begin 50s) with the new Cool tower behind it. All the way in the BG (right) is a sliver of the Coolse Poort.
The CoolTower (Cool is the city district where the tower is being realized) will reach its final height of 154 m in 2022 and will then offer space for approximately 282 apartments.
The construction is a rather complicated process: due to the limited space on and around the construction site, it is not possible to work with large building parts (so little use of prefab elements) and construction takes place on the building floors themselves. And the supply of materials is done via the JIT (just in time) regime, also to be able to guarantee that the nearby fire brigade fire station is hindered as little as possible. Because the Havenziekenhuis (a hospital) is a neighbour, vibrations on the construction site are avoided. The building is realized by Ballast Nedam, the architects are V8.

As it's going to be another hot day today I'm off looking for egg laying High Brown Fritillaries. I doubt I'll manage more than a few hours in this heat. Cool Water is by The Sons of the Pioneers and is suitable for this waterfall Triptych.

I found this cool little beetle today. I definitely did not expect to find any bugs in January but this just proves that it never hurts to look around. The flower that it is sitting on is a dandelion. Photographed in Maryland.
Yes its Sawley cut again but I did like the distinctive warm and cool halves and the slight mist softening the overall look.
Outtakes and leftovers (this was Saturday; the weather has turned for the better). I'll have to try to get back out with the camera before the weekend.

Exhausted from postholing on Tunusua we headed back the way we came and took the first flat snow-free spot to pitch the tent, dry some clothes, and enjoy the view to the Lyngmarksbraen icecap. It was time to ponder plan B.

We are really suffering with the heat here in the south of England. Temperatures in the 30's which for us, who live our lives without aircon, is so draining. The poor cats are all feeling it and are desperate to find cool spots around the house and in the garden which come the afternoon is nigh on impossible. Temperatures at night are in the 20's so not much sleep being had. I have a rechargeable handheld fan, which can also sit on your desk: an excellent buy from John Lewis I was sitting in my armchair this morning and Kaiser, as usual, came and sat on the arm of the chair. I wondered what would happen if I put the fan on him. I put it on the lowest setting and put it near his back and there seemed a positive reaction, so I put it in front of him and as you can see, he closed his eyes and enjoyed the cool air.
Thinking of our Californians ....their pets & wildlife and hoping they find a safe place to cross and be ...during this devastating time.
