The cooker was a differential housing which can split open when raised up from the bottom center. Supposedly Ed cooked hot dogs and what not in there. It does not look sanitary to me! But what do I know...
It is used to cook rice and any boiled vegetables . This can indicate the completion of the boiled food.
We go through 5 rice cookers in one year. That's about $100 dollars a year. So we just broke down and bought a new and fancy rice cooker. Yes, I'm embarassed to tell you how much it cost, but it's stainless steel (take THAT, nonstick). It was featured in the New York Times gift guide. But I bought it for myself instead. I decided to take a photo of myself in shiny glow of the stainless steel.
