A group of bald eagles gathers on the frozen surface of Lake Potter, Mississippi River, Rock Island, IL.

That's the word for a group of eagles.

And here too there's an audience of trumpeter swans.

This is the time of abundance in this small estuary.

Continuing our tour of the Bodleian. I recognised this room, Convocation House, as soon as I entered it. For some time parliament met here, during the Civil War (1642-9) when Oxford was used by the Royalists as an alternative to Westminster. Oxford did indeed become the King's capital and residence after he was forced to withdraw from London in Nov 1642. I think I recognised it from woodcut illustrations of the time which I studied as part of my degree, studying the Civil War for a whole year under the quite brilliant and eccentric Prof Ronald Hutton.

The University has used this room for 300 years as a meeting place for Convocation and Congregation and it continues to be used today for conferring degrees.

I had to sneak away from the tour to get this empty and have worked on it extensively to remove red ropes and pieces of laminated paper from the seating at the end as well as trying to bring up the shadows and not burn out the light. i find it stunningly beautiful in its simplicity.

A couple weeks ago, one of my Facebook friends texted me there had been a convocation of eagles near Gunder, IA for the last couple days and that they were still there today. I had to look up the word for a flock of eagles as I had never ever seen them gathered together in large groups.

When I arrived, I viewed 60 to 70 eagles all gathered together in th middle of a picked corn field. I took some photos from where I was. There was no cover to sneak up on them. Nor would they suffer to let me get even a few feet closer.I'm going to post just a few of the shots I took. Not because they are among my best eagle photos but because I had never seen a gathering like this before. I did follow them South for a few miles and got some additional shots.

They were so spread out, over the large field, that this was about the best I could do to show the numbers with a 400mm prime lens.

Thanks in advance for any favs or comments you may choose to leave.

Mount Royal University held its spring convocation for the Faculty of Health, Community and Education yesterday. (My husband's nephew received his Bachelor of Nursing degree.) Afterwards, there was jubilation in the crowded lobby as the new grads met their families.

Convocation Hall at University of Toronto (1907) looking particularly striking on a dusky evening with the smoke billowing from the chimney. Designed by architects Pearson and Darling in the neoclassical revival style, inspired by the theatre at Oxford University.

I have recently spent a lot of time within the Rockefeller Chapel, with a reinvigorated interest in photographing this beautiful structure. It certainly helped that I was contacted by them to publish some of my images from within and around campus. I was fortunate that they provided me a personal tour within the inner beast of this chapel, exploring little seen spaces and the amazing bells of the carillon. It was, needless to say, amazing, and a joy to be able to photograph. I'll soon be uploading a plethora of these images and create a set here on Flickr.

As for this image, it was taken the day before winter convocation (graduation).

Thanks for viewing and I hope you all have a wonderful upcoming holiday!

Throwback Thursday at KU: At KU’s Convocation on Aug. 21, students will gather for the traditional beginning of their college year.

But did you know that when KU had its opening ceremony on Sept. 12, 1866, not a single student was ready for college-level course work?

Forty-nine students attended that ceremony, then each met individually with KU’s first faculty members, Elial Rice, Francis Snow, and David Robinson.

The three professors found promise in some of the 55 students who enrolled by the end of that first week. But Kansas had not yet developed high schools, and KU’s students were academically unprepared for college.

For that reason, KU served initially as a preparatory academy. However, by the seventh year, enrollment had grown to 272 — including 73 college-level students.

KU’s first Commencement, held on June 11, 1873, turned out four graduates: valedictorian Flora Richardson, Ralph Collins, Lindorf Tosh, and Murray Harris.
