Oceanwise Whale Shark Expedition 21-07-13
A big thank you to everyone for coming on board and contributing directly towards our whale shark research and conservation efforts!
For our research, Jen did a plankton tow to understand more about whale sharks and the food they eat. Jess and Sandy used the GoPro stereo camera frame, which is used to measure the whale sharks and understand more about the role they play for other fish at Ningaloo. Jess also collected information on the fish associated with coral Porites bommies in the Ningaloo lagoon for her Honours research. The whole team took photographs for our marine biodiversity database for Ningaloo!

This is a photograph from the 4th annual running of the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs New Year Road Challenge which was held in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Sunday 10th January 2015 at 13:00. The race is organised by the local GAA club called Lough Lene Gaels. There were two races on offer today - a 10KM road race and a 5KM road race, fun run, and walk. This is one of the first road races in the midlands of the New Year 2016 and attracted over 300 runners, joggers and walkers. As this was a community orientated event families were especially welcome in the 5KM race. The race was organised to raise funding for the development of the GAA pitches for the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs. Overall this was a very successful event with a very large field of well over 300 participants in both races combined. The great local effort was exemplified by a very big local contingent from Collinstown and neighbouring areas. The 5KM race was an out and back course on the Collinstown to Fore Road. The 10KM was also on an out and back course with a deviation between 2KM and 7KM for the longer race. There were several tough hills but an equal amount of down-hill. For most participants both races were the proverbial race of two halves with the outward section down-hill and wind assisted with the return leg from Lough Lene to the finish (about 2.5KM in total) up hill and with a stiff sharp cold breeze in the face. Hot and cold refreshments were provided in the Lough Lene Inn Pub afterwards with prize-giving.

Collinstown is about 11 miles northeast of Mullingar in Co. Westmeath. The dominant geographical feature of the area and of both races is the beautiful Lough Lene a large freshwater lake close to the village. The water in the lake is internationally noted for the purity and clarity of its water and Lough Lene has regularly been awarded the blue flag status for water quality from the European Commission. It is well known amongst anglers. It covers approximately 430 hectares with water is measured to depths to 20m.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. Range: Northern Kenya, Southern Ethiopia
There are fewer than 3,000 Grevy’s zebra remaining in the wild. Hunting for their skins and competition for food and water with domestic livestock are contributing factors to the decline in Grevy’s zebras. The largest of the three zebra species, the Grevy’s can also be distinguished by a large patch of white found on either side of its tail.
Physcient brings modern technology to hand-held surgical instruments that have remained unchanged for decades. These venerable instruments — used in every hospital — contribute to pain, lengthy recoveries, and post-operative complications, imposing large, hidden costs of care. Most thoracic surgical procedures are performed by standard, open surgery, either by thoracotomy or sternotomy. However, the 1930's-era instrument commonly used to pry open the chest badly traumatizes the chest wall. So, recovery from the thoracotomy or sternotomy is long, painful, and sometimes badly complicated.
Physcient is developing technology that decreases the trauma of surgical access. Surgeons regularly deform tissues either to gain surgical access to another tissue or organ, or as part of the surgical procedure. These deformations are usually extreme, beyond the point at which tissues can be badly damaged. For example, during a thoracotomy, ribs are spread apart with tremendous force — 40 to 125 pounds — breaking ribs, crushing nerves, and rending joints.
Physcient has performed the first biomechanical analyses of these extreme tissue deformations. We believe that we have identified fundamental ways to deliver full surgical access with greatly reduced trauma.

This is a photograph from the 3rd round of the Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 21st May 2014 at 20:00. This is the penultimate race in the 2014 series. The race follows the roads and trails around Belvedere and is a very testing 5KM route. The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Over 350 people took part in tonight's event. The weather was the best yet with beautiful warm sunshine with little or no breeze. Perfect running conditions. The final round of the league will take place in one weeks time.

New Windsor, NY - On the evening of December 9th 2016, the New York Army National Guard 1-258th Field Artillery Battalion commanded by LTC Peter Mehling held their annual St Barbara’s Ball and Award Ceremony. The Honorable Order of Saint Barbara Award was presented to Captain Elite Won, Bravo Battery 1-258 FA and Sergeant First Class Jason Cooley, HHC 1-69 Infantry Battalion.
The award recognizes exceptional service by Field artillery soldiers of the 258 Field Artillery Battalion and links the Field artillerymen of the past and present together in a brotherhood of professionalism, selfless service and sacrifice symbolized by the Saint Barbara Award.
The 258 also presented the Artillery Order of Molly Pitcher Award to Mrs. Christina Durst, Alpha Battery and Mrs. Shannon Curbelo, Alpha Battery for their dedication and support to the 258 FA BN. The Artillery Order of Molly Pitcher recognizes individuals who have voluntarily contributed in a significant way to the improvement of the Field Artillery Community.

This is a photograph from the annual Ardagh Moydow Glen Community Games 5KM and 10 Mile road races, fun runs, walks and challenges which were held in the heritage village of Ardagh, Co. Longford, Ireland on Tuesday 27th December 2016 at 13:00. This year's race featured some changes from previous years: the introduction of chip timing, a new start and finish in the middle of the village at the community center and, a slightly amended route.

The 10 mile race takes in the local 'Ardagh Mountain' which is a 1 mile continuous climb starting at the 2.5 mile mark of the 10 mile race. The 5KM race takes a loop around the heritage village of Ardagh. Overall this is a very well organised race with accurate courses, good marshalling and traffic control and excellent after race refreshments. The 10 mile race is one of the longest road races held during the Christmas period anywhere in Ireland and has appeal to runners who want to add a longer distance race to their festive calendar of running.
The weather at this year's race was much more suitable to road racing. In 2014 there was very frosty icy weather and last year in 2015 participants were given a very very windy day with heavy rain at the finish of both races.
Ardagh is probably County Longford's most picturesque village with many historical and architecturally important features. It is located about 6 miles from Longford town.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Design
Built in the Brutalist architectural style between 1968 and 1969, designed by Keith Ingham and Charles Wilson of Building Design Partnership with E. H. Stazicker, it has a capacity of 80 double-decker buses, 40 along each side of the building. Some claim that it is the second largest bus station in Western Europe. Pedestrian access to the Bus Station is through any of three subways, one of which links directly to the adjacent Guild Hall, while the design also incorporates a multi-storey car park of five floors with space for 1,100 cars.
The building's engineers, Ove Arup and Partners, designed the distinctive curve of the car park balconies "after acceptable finishes to a vertical wall proved too expensive, contributing to the organic, sculptural nature of the building. The edges are functional, too, in that they protect car bumpers from crashing against a vertical wall. The cover balustrade protects passengers from the weather by allowing buses to penetrate beneath the lower parking floor."
Threatened demolition
The building is threatened with demolition as part of the City Council's Tithebarn redevelopment project. In 2000, opposition to the demolition led to a failed application for listed building status by English Heritage. Preston Borough Council (as it was then known) opposed the application.
Putting forward the case for a smaller terminus, a report, commissioned by the council and Grosvenor in 2000, stated that "buses arriving and leaving the bus station have very low bus occupancy rates indicating that passengers alight and board elsewhere in the town centre. The bus station car park similarly suffers from the poor pedestrian linkages." Listing was subsequently rejected.
On October 11, 2005, Preston City Council and developer Grosvenor Holdings signed an agreement to go ahead with the Tithebarn redevelopment project, which calls for the demolition of the current bus station.
A survey conducted by the Lancashire Evening Post in May 2010 found that Preston Bus Station was Preston people's favourite building.
A further application to list the bus station was rejected in 2010 and a review of the decision was turned down in 2011. It featured on the 2012 World Monument Fund's list of sites at risk.
It featured in a song on the show All Over the Place.

The Portumna Marathon, 50KM, and 100KM Ultra Marathon took place in the National Forest Park in Portumna, Co. Galway, Ireland on 16th June 2012. This was the 3rd year of the event and this was the biggest event yet with record numbers in the marathon, 50km, and 100KM races. The race itself takes place on a flat 5km loop around the forest park and marina area in Portumna. Participants in all three events shared the same loop. This led to some wonderful cameraderie amongst the runners with eveyone offering each other support.
Congratulations must go to the organisation of the event. The marathons were organised by Sports Ireland, and led by high performance coach, Sebastien Locteau.
This marathon festival is a hidden gem on the Irish marathon and ultra calendar.

On Friday, 1 April 2022, the Polish National Day took place at the College of Europe in Natolin.
The Natolin Campus transformed into a landscape of a Polish fairytale with snow surrounding the buildings' premises.
The National Day revolved around the concept of solidarity. The Polish students proposed a transversal version of the country, showing all shapes of Polish identity and Polish solidarity from different moments of the State’s history.
The night before the National Day, the students had the chance to watch an interesting movie - "Jack Strong" – particularly relevant because of the courage of a man, Colonel Ryszard KUKLIŃSKI, who prevented a potential nuclear confrontation during the Cold War.
Throughout the entire day and during the weekend, the students on campus could enjoy several art exhibitions. At first, the Polish students proposed a series of portraits of relevant figures that somehow contributed to the said solidarity – among them Irena SENDLEROWA and Martyna WOJCIECHOWSKA. Later, students could watch a series of ancient pictures of Warsaw, granted by the Museum of Warsaw and representing the city from the end-XIX century to the beginning of the XX century. Additionally, there was an exhibition of Polish posters from the modernist era. Lastly, students could be taken on a fascinating temporal trip thanks to an exhibition of items and objects from the Polish People’s Republic (PPR) era, provided by the Muzeum Życia w PRL.
The PPR exhibition was the ground for the very first attraction of the national day. Polish students introduced their colleagues to the daily life and culture in the communist times in Poland through a workshop, illustrating the way of saying and the scenes from the movie Miś.
After that, students could enjoy a wonderful dinner based on Polish cuisine from the XVII century in the campus restaurant, magnificently decorated to allow students to have a full immersion experience. There was also a possibility to see cloths of that time, with some of the Polish students dressed in aristocratic clothes and folkloristic ones.
The main event of the Polish National Day was the High Level Panel about solidarity nowadays and as a national trait in Poland, with the participation of two exceptional guests: the Mayor of Warsaw Capital City, Mr Rafał TRZASKOWSKI and the former EU Ambassador to Ukraine, H.E. Jan TOMBIŃSKI. The guests were greeted and introduced by Madame Vice-Rector, Mrs Ewa OŚNIECKA-TAMECKA.
Lastly, Natolin students enjoyed a concert of Polish jazz performed by the internationally prized group Jazz Combo Volta. The performance was accompanied by a degustation of best selected Polish alcohols, particularly a rare type of mead.
During the National Day, the Polish students at Natolin Natolin's aimed at presenting all shapes of “Polishness" and Polish national identity to the community.
The Andrew Carnegie Society recognizes those who contribute $1,000 or more annually to CMU and educates current students about the importance of philanthropy. At this dinner, scholarship recipients (ACS Scholars, Legacy Scholars, and Holleran Scholars) gathered together for an inside look at CMU finances, the endowment, and the philanthropic vision of Andrew Carnegie. They also learned how past "Give Back" efforts (in which the scholars function as a foundation board) have been used in the past by campus groups.

The rectangular, two-story, side-gabled structure with roof shed window dormers was influenced by Neo-Classicism- evident by the symmetrically arranged facade, incised porch, and central portico. The house was built in 1901 by Lucy Carnegie on the site of an antebellum plantation known as Stafford Plantation Mansion. The house is in the Stafford Plantation Historic District listed the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property.
Sebastian Spering Kresge established the the S.S. Kresge Company in 1899 that operated variety discount stores- five and ten cents stores. The Kresge store in Richmond, Indiana was built around 1930. The building is located in the Richmond Downtown Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property. Note: The S. S. Kresge Corporation was renamed to Kmart Corporation in 1977. The first store Kmart store had opened in 1962.

National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) was established in July, 2001 as a federal statutory body. It is a fast-track initiative to improve social sector outcomes at the grass-roots. NCHD has been officially declared as lead agency for the spread of literacy programs in the country by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The 2006 UNESCO International Reading Association Literacy Prize has been awarded to NCHD for its National Literacy Program.
Visit of Mr. Pervaiz Lodhi – Member PHDF
Mr. Pervaiz lodhie a distinguished member of PHDF visited Malala Feeder School on 7th March 2015 alongwith his team and the Worthy Director operations Sindh Humaira Hashimi Sahiba. The team arrived at Malala feeder school at about 12.00noon. A warm welcome was given to the distinguished guests. The students from Malala wrapped in school uniform give a salute the honourable guests and offered flowers to the guests. Thrown rose petals in a queue to the head Masters room.
Where Mr. Moti lal – Head Master briefed the honourable guests about the back ground and the efforts taken for establishment of such a wonderful building through donations. He elaborated that besides donors the I-care, PHDF, Mir Ghulam Ali Talpur and the chairman usher and zakat the children are continuously supporting the school by making donations from their pocket money, which were a unique contribution and the idea for construction of malala feeder school. They started the school with the number of 25 children only but now after hectic efforts and continuous work hard the number has raised to 455. At the movement 5 Feeder teachers are placed while 3 other teachers are voluntarily putting their time and efforts.
Then the guests visited each class room one by one, where two children from each class presented rose flowers to the guests. The guest asked many questions about the education, the attitude of the teachers and their satisfaction from the school and learning land marks. Checked and found whole the school very neat and clean.
A gathering of parents of children was also arranged in the school, after visiting class rooms the honourable guests moved toward the stage where function started with the recitation of holy Quran. A student of class three Ghulam Rasool recited from Holy Quran.
Naat Maqbool (PBHM) was presented by three female students namely Huma Naz, Mehmoona, Nayab and Iqra
Mr. Pervaiz lodhi – member PHDF said in his address that PHDF put a unique idea of public and private partnership and have proved that by collective efforts Pakistan can meet the desired goals and objectives especially in the field of education. He called a meeting with stake holder and the private sector yesterday and will be meet with the honourable minister and PHDF members in Pakistan to contribute on their part in the uplift of NCHD and the objective of Education and literacy in Pakistan. He thinks that it is only NCHD which has office in every district of the Pakistan and grass root approach. He will try a funding and the support of Pakistanis in America and bring some good news as well. He is himself contacting various philanthropists and groups in this regard also. Insha Allah we will bring a positive change in Pakistan and continue our mission. He appreciated the innovative idea for construction of Malala school building. He also suggested that he will show the movie to the father of Malala who is visiting America in coming month.

Water scarcity and conflict over freshwater resources have contributed to an “arc of instability” stretching from West Africa through the Maghreb and across the Mediterranean to the Middle East. Rural livelihoods are collapsing, displacing many, and violent extremist organizations like Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, and ISIS are gaining footholds in areas where governance is weak. As local communities demand better provisioning of water, insurgent groups, building on discontent, use water to finance their operations and as a weapon of war. This panel will examine the causes of water conflict in the region, discuss implications for U.S. interests, and examine possible interventions to support better water governance.

History
Sissinghurst's garden was created in the 1930s by Vita Sackville-West, poet and gardening writer, and her husband Harold Nicolson, author and diplomat.[2] Sackville-West was a writer on the fringes of the Bloomsbury Group who found her greatest popularity in the weekly columns she contributed as gardening correspondent of The Observer, which incidentally—for she never touted it—made her own garden famous.[3] The garden itself is designed as a series of 'rooms', each with a different character of colour and/or theme, the walls being high clipped hedges and many pink brick walls.[4] The rooms and 'doors' are so arranged that, as one enjoys the beauty in a given room, one suddenly discovers a new vista into another part of the garden, making a walk a series of discoveries that keeps leading one into yet another area of the garden.[5] Nicolson spent his efforts coming up with interesting new interconnections, while Sackville-West focused on making the flowers in the interior of each room exciting.
For Sackville-West, Sissinghurst and its garden rooms came to be a poignant and romantic substitute for Knole,[6] reputedly the largest house in Britain, which as the only child of Lionel, the 3rd Lord Sackville she would have inherited had she been a male, but which had passed to her cousin as the male heir.
The site is ancient; "hurst" is the Saxon term for an enclosed wood. A manor house with a three-armed moat was built here in the Middle Ages. In 1305, King Edward I spent a night here. It was long thought that in 1490 Thomas Baker, a man from Cranbrook, purchased Sissinghurst, although there is no evidence for it.[7] What is certain is that the house was given a new brick gatehouse in the 1530s by Sir John Baker, one of Henry VIII's Privy Councillors, and greatly enlarged in the 1560s by his son Sir Richard Baker, when it became the centre of a 700-acre (2.8 km2) deer park. In August 1573 Queen Elizabeth I spent three nights at Sissinghurst.[7]

After the collapse of the Baker family in the late 17th century, the building had many uses: as a prisoner-of-war camp during the Seven Years' War; as the workhouse for the Cranbrook Union; after which it became homes for farm labourers.
Sackville-West and Nicolson found Sissinghurst in 1930 after concern that their property Long Barn, near Sevenoaks, Kent, was close to development over which they had no control. Although Sissinghurst was derelict, they purchased the ruins and the farm around it and began constructing the garden we know today.[6] The layout by Nicolson and planting by Sackville-West were both strongly influenced by the gardens of Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens; by the earlier Cothay Manor in Somerset, laid out by Nicolson's friend Reginald Cooper, and described by one garden writer as the "Sissinghurst of the West Country";[9] and by Hidcote Manor Garden, designed and owned by Lawrence Johnston, which Sackville-West helped to preserve. Rapid population growth can be a contributing factor to both greenhouse gas emissions and vulnerability to climate stresses. Early childbearing, high fertility rates, and short birth intervals are associated with poor maternal and child health outcomes as well as lower educational attainment and work force participation, which directly impede women’s ability to participate and invest in climate change adaptation. However, the positive benefits of voluntary family planning, either for emissions reductions or adaptation, have not figured prominently in climate policy discussions or those related to improving access to family planning.
To address this gap, the Population Reference Bureau and Worldwatch Institute formed an international Population Dynamics and Climate-Compatible Development Expert Working Group to identify policy opportunities to increase investment in family planning in climate-sensitive development initiatives. Donors stepped up to support United Way of the Lower Mainland's 2010 fundraising campaign, contributing over $29.5 million to improve lives and strengthen communities throughout the region.
Approximately 800 people gathered for breakfast at the Scotiabank & United Way Community Spirit Awards in Vancouver on Wednesday, March 9. The event honoured volunteers and donors who supported the annual United Way campaign.
