Il y eut tout d'abord deux brèches dans le cadre épistémologique de la science classique. Pico da Bandeira is considered the highest point in exclusively Brazilian territory, but, in fact, it is registered as the third highest in the country, with about 2,892 meters / 9,488 ft , when compared to the peaks of Neblina, with 2,993 meters / 9,819 ft, and the 31st of March, with 2,972 meters / 9,750 ft. However, both are located on the border between Brazil and Venezuela and, therefore, are not entirely national. These heights were recently updated, in the Pontos Culminantes Project, by IBGE.

  

The title of the highest peak in Brazil was given in 1859, when D. Pedro II had the Brazilian flag hoisted at the top of the elevation. As for the name of the Park, some historians argue that the word caparaó has an indigenous origin and means “water flowing from the rocks”. There are those who say that there are other meanings, such as: crooked river house or house of cover (capara) — a building made with mats, common in high and cold places.

  

However, an amusing legend contradicts the story. According to popular reports, in the region where today the Park is located, there was a very angry ox called Ó. As this ox always scared away anyone who tried to capture it, the herdsmen made a joint effort and after many days and struggles, they finally caught the animal. As proof of such bravery, they decided to castrate it, and the rumor spread: “caparam o Ó / they castrated it”. In Portuguese, "CaparaÓ"!

  

The place has other historical dates, such as the year 1967, when the Movimento Nacionalista Revolucionário (MNR) promoted an armed uprising, called “Guerrilha do Caparaó”, which contested the dictatorial regime and, according to historians, was idealized by Leonel Brizola and sponsored by Cuban statesman Fidel Castro. There was great national repercussion, the guerrillas remained for months in Serra do Caparaó, until they were denounced. In 2007, the journalist from Espírito Santo, José Caldas da Costa, launched the book “Caparaó – The first guerrilla against the dictatorship”. In the launch, former guerrilla fighter Araken Vaz Galvão stated: “We took Caparaó out of geography and placed him in history”.

I have wanted to do something different for a while, then one gets lost in what can only be described as "Photographers Block", akin to "Writers Block" same thing yet different tool of creativity. I even deleted a photo I put up yesterday as I hated it, simply because experimental change is sometimes difficult, in the enigmatic paradigm of remaining as was, yet contradicted by the yearn for change, albeit lost for choice yet unable to see the forest for the trees! If you catch my convoluted drift?!

 

I think the criteria of assumed "change" is tethered to the idea of realising that ,change, in one's self cannot therefore be abridged to the same/similar ideas of others, it is a struggle then to remain original. I am still trying to conquer it whilst trying to not to lose my perspective to the idea of absolutes!

 

So this photo I took along the A100 with the Westhafen Canal running parallel, in which there are three or four barges moored along the walkway, I had been meaning to get to them since the weather has since started to slowly improve. They are basically big floating elongated buckets of either nothing or asphalt, earth and what have you. But they are interesting for the very old mechanical presence, compositional offerings and overall differing of imagery from nature and anything else that has been done to death so far. The clouds were thin and wonderfully striated offering a bokeh contradiction of composition's directional flow. It was tricky getting the angle as I wanted to get the motorway out of the focus completely.

The Bent Pyramid is an ancient Egyptian pyramid located at the royal necropolis of Dahshur, approximately 40 kilometres south of Cairo, built under the Old Kingdom Pharaoh Sneferu (c. 2600 BC). A unique example of early pyramid development in Egypt, this was the second pyramid built by Sneferu.

 

The Bent Pyramid rises from the desert at a 54-degree inclination, but the top section (above 47 meters) is built at the shallower angle of 43 degrees, lending the pyramid its very obvious 'bent' appearance.

 

Archaeologists now believe that the Bent Pyramid represents a transitional form between step-sided and smooth-sided pyramids (see Step pyramid). It has been suggested that due to the steepness of the original angle of inclination the structure may have begun to show signs of instability during construction, forcing the builders to adopt a shallower angle to avert the structure's collapse. This theory appears to be borne out by the fact that the adjacent Red Pyramid, built immediately afterwards by the same Pharaoh, was constructed at an angle of 43 degrees from its base. This fact also contradicts the theory that at the initial angle the construction would take too long because Sneferu's death was nearing, so the builders changed the angle to complete the construction in time. In 1974 Kurt Mendelssohn suggested the change of the angle to have been made as a security precaution in reaction to a catastrophic collapse of the Meidum Pyramid while it was still under construction.

It is also unique amongst the approximately ninety pyramids to be found in Egypt, in that its original polished limestone outer casing remains largely intact. British structural engineer Peter James attributes this to larger clearances between the parts of the casing than used in later pyramids; these imperfections would work as expansion joints and prevent the successive destruction of the outer casing by thermal expansion.

 

The ancient formal name of the Bent Pyramid is generally translated as (The)-Southern-Shining-Pyramid, or Sneferu-(is)-Shining-in-the-South.

These unique dragonflies are only found in Australia and have this unusual habit of holding the wings shut like Damselflies.

 

I am puzzled by the red wing tab (pterostigma). All the photos I have seen of this species have more muted colours for the wing tabs.

 

Location is the Eurobodalla Botanic Gardens on the south coast of NSW, Australia.

 

This addition means I have now photographed 13 species of odenata at the Eurobodalla Botanic Gardens this year. I think that is pretty remarkable since the gardens were burned completely in the 2019/2020 bushfires.

 

Jeff Melville has the following summary which is so concise I thought worth sharing :

 

“This Australian endemic species has so many peculiarities!

 

Most obviously atypical, it's a dragonfly (Anisoptera) that perches with wings closed; only the other three endemic Australian species of the genus also do that. The forward-facing eyes, meeting all along the midline above the frons, confirm that it's Anisopteran, and the presence of a single inferior terminal appendage in this male is definitive, although you might have to squint a little to see it in these views.

 

The wings contradict the Anisopteran stereotype most thoroughly. The forewings are almost identical to the hindwings in size, shape and venation, although it's difficult to see that when they are closed; these images from the wing scans taken by John Tann from museum specimens set with the wings open show the extent of the similarity:

The most noticeable departure from the Anisopteran norm is that the hind wings are so narrow at the base, and reach their greatest width near the middle, like the forewings. The most specialised members of family Libellulidae, such as the Flutterers (Rhyothemis), have hindwings that are widest at the base and taper all the way to the tip; presumably this gives much better aerodynamic flow when moving at speed. You can see from the side-on views of C. pygmaea how much damage to the wing base might occur opening and closing such wings on a rocky substrate; the bases would trail on the ground in the closed position.

 

Cordulephya species seem to have taken the option of a damselfly lifestyle, while retaining the eye and appendage structure that identifies them as dragonflies, and the internal pumped larval gills that give them a metabolic advantage in waters with lower oxygen content. Does it help the adults to be able to crawl in more confined spaces than a species with permanently open wings? Does this harmonise with a flight time calendar that avoids the peak season for more voracious species that might prey on them? Interesting to speculate.”

I couldn’t decide if to take Inspire with me to Fiji. Of-course there would be some fun aerial opportunities but I had told myself I was jetting off to the little tropical island to relax and lugging a large drone through checked in luggage, customs and to and from the resort (not to mention the pre-departure Fijian CAAF request and approval) seemed to somehow contradict this notion.

 

You guessed it - in the end she came and with a huge coral reef right at my door step and kayaks ready to go I'm glad she did.

Tweedledum and Tweedledee are characters in an English nursery rhyme and in Lewis Carroll's 1871 book Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. Their names may have originally come from an epigram written by poet John Byrom. The nursery rhyme has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 19800. The names have since become synonymous in western popular culture slang for any two people who look and act in identical ways, generally in a derogatory context.

 

The words "Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee" make their first appearance in print as names applied to the composers George Frideric Handel and Giovanni Bononcini in "one of the most celebrated and most frequently quoted (and sometimes misquoted) epigrams", satirising disagreements between Handel and Bononcini, written by John Byrom (1692–1763): in his satire, from 1725. Some say, compar'd to BononciniThat Mynheer Handel's but a NinnyOthers aver, that he to HandelIs scarcely fit to hold a CandleStrange all this Difference should be'Twixt Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee!

Rudbeckia /rʌdˈbɛkiə/ is a plant genus in the Asteraceae or composite family. Rudbeckia flowers feature a prominent, raised central disc in black, brown shades of green, and in-between tones, giving rise to their familiar common names of coneflowers and black-eyed-susans. All are native to North America, and many species are cultivated in gardens for their showy yellow or gold flower heads that bloom in mid to late summer.

 

The species are herbaceous, mostly perennial plants (some annual or biennial) growing to 0.5–3.0 m tall, with simple or branched stems. The leaves are spirally arranged, entire to deeply lobed, and 5–25 cm long. Rudbeckia is one of at least four genera within the flowering plant family Asteraceae whose members are commonly known as coneflowers; the others are Echinacea, Dracopis, and Ratibida.

 

Rudbeckia species are eaten by the caterpillars of some Lepidoptera species including cabbage moths and dot moths.

 

The name was given by Carolus Linnaeus to honor his patron and fellow botanist at Uppsala University, Olof Rudbeck the Younger (1660-1740), as well as Rudbeck's late father Olof Rudbeck the Elder (1630-1702), a distinguished Naturalist, Philologist, and Doctor of Medicine (he had discovered the lymphatic system), and founder of Sweden's first botanic garden, now the Linnaean Garden at Uppsala. In 1730 Linnaeus had been invited into the home of the younger Rudbeck (now almost 70) as tutor his youngest children. Rudbeck had then recommended Linnaeus to replace him as a lecturer at the university and as the botanical garden demonstrator, even though Linnaeus was only in his second year of studies. In his book The Compleat Naturalist: A Life of Linnaeus, Wilfred Blunt quotes Linnaeus's dedication:

HGGT! Ukraine Matters!

Today is my father’s birthday and he would have been 74 years old in the way that us humans who still have bodies measure time. I know his consciousness still exists because he’s sent me signs and I had a visitation dream from him a few months ago. If I had met myself right now a year ago, I might not recognize the person I am today in many ways. But, I have accepted that to dismiss the idea that consciousness continues and that we live on this Earth for many lives is just arrogance. We cannot continue to demand proof for everything, either. That is also a form of arrogance. We have to open ourselves like a door to different possibilities. In any case, I can’t look back at the human I was. I have to move forward.

 

Still, it’s really hard to experience your first holidays and birthdays “without" a person you’ve known your whole life. It’s not just them that it feels like vanishes in your darkest moments but it’s also an aspect of yourself in a weird way. Everyone sees you and experiences moments with you that are unique and that helps you piece together what your identity is now and what it can become. We’re still all in this primordial mess, really, just trying to figure it all out. So it goes, as Kurt Vonnegut would say.

 

Also, your body knows the truth even if your heart believes consciousness still exists. In this case, my hair started falling out in long red strands. I still have a full head of hair but I feel like something is missing a little more each day.

 

My dad wasn’t a very easy person to be around when I was growing up, to be honest with you. He had a bad temper at times and it was best you avoided him when he was in a certain mood. There was a part of me that felt I could never live up to what he wanted me to be, especially in terms of my intelligence. I don’t think he ever realized that I felt this way, though, or maybe he didn’t understand how pervasive my thoughts about this were. I was and still am a very sensitive person. If someone is in a bad mood, I assume it’s my fault. I’ve had significant OCD symptoms since I was little and, because of this, I tend to play and replay interactions in my head, wondering what I could have done differently and perseverating on everything I did wrong. It’s hard for me to move past conflict because of this. My dad had this perception that if you didn’t do things his way, you were contradicting him on purpose or just flat out wrong without realizing fully how different brains can truly be. He didn’t seem to mind conflict (in fact, he seemed to thrive on it) and sometimes things I wasn’t even aware I was doing would set him off. Everyone has their “things” so to speak and rules they decide on in order to exist in a reality they consider reasonable and fair. That’s all I will say about that because I’ve accepted it in my own way.

 

My dad was also a highly intelligent, talented, progressive, and passionate person. I realized this when I actually sat down to write his Obituary in the summer. Making sense of a life-my life or another person’s life is laughable. We are just so complex. But, we still have to try. As a photographer, I was drawn to all of the photos of memories I had forgotten about with my dad I went through to put together for the service. I don’t have any brothers or sisters so I don’t have a comparison point for how my dad treated siblings. My mom just recently found this photo and it’s very much the age my dad appeared when he visited me in my dream and we were back in my first childhood home in the dining room. He was younger than I am now in the dream and I am still thinking about how absolutely absurd time seems.

 

What I found in these photos were moments of genuine love and acceptance, even if I wasn’t always aware of them at the time. I was always so stuck in my own head space. If I didn’t squeeze my toes every time I passed a yellow house, something bad was going to happen. If I didn’t tap my fingers every time a red truck went by, something bad was going to happen. If I told anyone why I was hysterically crying for seemingly no reason, something bad was going to happen. Must be, everyone felt like this and went through this, I thought. It was probably just a part of life anyway. I’m sure I wasn’t the easiest daughter. I always thought I was going to be poisoned or get gangrene or fall prey to some unexplained event because I didn’t do all the right things at all of the right times. That’s what having OCD is like for a child, by the way. And, keep in mind that if you know a child who seems melodramatic often, again they might not tell you why they are upset because they are too superstitious about it to do so. There’s an unexpected monster lurking around every corner. It always seems like there’s far more danger in the world than safety to us. Random and painful, life is coming for you. And as Douglas Adams said, “Life is wasted on the living.”

 

But what I actually just realized in the last few hours of my existence is that going through all of the photos, all of the memories, all of the things my dad wrote in his memoirs class (like when I flew out of a roller coaster at Canada’s Wonderland and he pulled me to him until the end of the ride) is a little like Kintsugi. We’re such broken beings and every day a little more cracked and aching. So, we have to do our best to piece it all back together and make sense of our life on Earth and our relationships. We can re-attach with twine or even lacquer or superglue but what we have left might transform completely from what we started with before we fell apart. I have fallen apart many times myself.

 

Isn’t it great that we can use Kintsugi with photos to put it all back together again? We’re going to continue to exist, no matter how hard it is. The world can feel like a bunch of noisy nonsense most days. Sometimes, we ask for more when we don’t deserve it or at least think we don’t. We are going to mend and try to make amends. We are going to make mistake after mistake after mistake and we are going to feel so sad about it in a way that feels relentless and we’re just going to keep crawling on our knees to find all of the missing pieces. It’s ok if we leave some of the pieces out when we reconstruct. Maybe we find them and maybe we don’t. Then, we look in the mirror and don’t recognize ourselves. Maybe that’s ok, too. But then we find ourselves in a photo all over again with someone we love and somehow in that moment things make sense again.

This was taken at the Much Marcle Steam Rally on 21st July 2018, although I've uploaded this image a few months later. Its accompanied by this little short story of summer that I hope warms you a little, lifting chilly mid-winter's veil like a welcome Gluehwein….

 

For quite some time, Britain had been in the grip of a heatwave, and this day was one of the hottest, with searing bright sunlight, a scorching heat and only the occasional unhurried cotton wool clouds ambling across the azure blue sky far above us.

 

I felt at home in shorts and T shirt, even if my kit rucksack was making my back warm. The fields were parched, the earth was cracked and grass had dried and become a crinkly golden straw, slightly crunchy beneath my walking boots.

 

With no breeze, the warm air was filled with the sweet smell of honeysuckle, hedgerows and hay, and metallic clanking of farm ploughs turning the dusty soil in the fields intermingled with the infrequent yowl of the tractor pull.

 

Glad to find a hay bale to sit on near the shade of a hedge I gently placed my camera bag next to me, and sipping lukewarm mineral water, watched an old, rusty tractor with not a fleck of paint on its ancient and weathered rusty patina stoically ploughing regular furrows with a lightness that contradicted its battered and well used years. The warm roughness of my Canon body nestled into my palm and felt part of me as this image was made.

 

Quintessentially English, this warm idyllic day scented by summer flowers was accented by capturing rich images of rural farming, the emotion of a long summer day in the fields, and the kind and lovable people who love to live and work the land.

 

For some time, I’ve been trying to decide if this should be black and white or full technicolor, but for now, monochrome has won out. That might change….

Les habitants de Chassant , petit village de 350 habitants, avaient émis le souhait qu' un boucher s' installe dans le village. Leur voeux exaucé , et après quelques mois d' euphorie conjointe, ils retournèrent à leur habitude d' aller chez Intermarché , Leclerc , Lidl . Ces grandes surfaces , situées dans un rayon de 20 kms, vendant la viande deux fois moins chère .

On comprend la colère rentrée de l' artisan !

Eglwys Nunydd Reservoir , Margam, Glamorgan. Bird has been around a week though I was put off from going initially by reports of birders being kicked off site and having to view from across the M4 motorway. There were a trickle of photos coming out which contradicted this and when a friend went the day before without problem i gave it a go, arriving pre dawn to try and evade security. Got off to a bad start when i was met by security on the track in, but they just asked if i wanted to come in through the gate ! (seems they are only kicking people out when there is sailing typically at weekends). So i did, went up to the res and there was the bird right in front of me. Light wasnt great but for the next 90 minutes it showed at point blank range. A very rare vagrant visitor with 9 previous records in Britain, a bit smaller than a GND and closely related to the BTD.

Rien de plus français que l'esprit de contradiction... Surtout ces derniers temps, avouons-le !

Les penseurs et penseuses féministes, queer, les sociologues les plus divers et autres observateurs critiques du monde moderne ont même des mots composés à rallonge pour résumer ce mode de vie qui tente de s'imposer à toutes et tous.

 

C'est donc tout naturellement qu'on s'attend à ce que les personnes LGBT+ soient à la pointe de la contradiction envers ce modèle... Et c'est assez vrai.

And physicists have recently been trying to make us believe that everything is predetermined. The new edition of determinism seems to be in vogue right now. The photo contradicts this.
