The Brief; -
Happy Valley is a generously proportioned 1930’s residence sitting within beautifully landscaped 4 acres of grounds. Our brief was to design a penthouse over the existing building to maximise the views over the grounds and provide a gallery space for pieces of contemporary art and furniture.
The Design; -
Our solution was to design a light-weight steel framed structure with an over-sailing eaves detail to provide solar shading to the extensively glazed garden facing elevation. The glazed section affords uninterrupted views across the landscaped grounds and into the countryside beyond. The glazing itself is highly engineered to reduce heat loss, solar gain and is also self cleaning to reduce maintenance. The existing stair has been extended with glass and stainless steel, above which a glass-vaulted roof transmits light into the core of the building via the stairwell.
Proportions of the penthouse have been carefully designed in order that it does not dominate the existing architecture. The horizontal proportions of the penthouse have been accentuated to harmonize with the horizontal banding of the main building whilst preserving the integrity of the existing architecture by allowing it to be easily defined.
The penthouse encloses 76M2 of internal space with two external sun terraces to enjoy during summer.
Internally, the gallery space is equipped with discreet adjustable lighting, a recessed track for hanging panels and a recessed picture rail on the wall for hanging artwork.

Toyota / Sustainable Retailing Exterior Study - 2010 / 2011
Space Projects were appointed by Toyota GB Plc to formulate a blueprint for their “Sustainable Retail Centres ‘” throughout the U.K.
Being current brand guardians for Toyota GB Plc and having completed a successful roll out programme for 190 + sites, Space Projects are ideally placed to identify ‘eco technologies’ that will compliment and enhance the operational demands of Toyota Centres.
The study looked at every component and operation of a typical Toyota Centre to identify opportunities to minimize environmental impact through reducing energy use, generating energy, saving water, rainwater harvesting, recycling.
In tandem with environmental benefits, the study demonstrated commercial benefits via life cycle cost savings for the Retail Centres.
The realization of these works will be translated into Toyota’s new showrooms during the in the first half of 2011.

The attached pictures illustrate the first of a new proto-type Toyota customer lounge area designed specifically for smaller showrooms. The unit is manufactured, constructed, pre-wired and completely assembled tested and tweaked off site before then being disassembled, transported to site and installed.
Appointed lead design consultants / design guardians for Toyota (GB) Plc in 2001 and continuing this role to the present day our role involves all aspects of Toyota’s showroom architectural design, interior design, contractor management and project implementation within the UK from concept design of all new centres and interior brand development to the re-designing and refurbishment of all existing centres.
The success of Space Projects design and implementation operation emanates from operating a tight team of designers and consultants, all with a “total” all-round skill base. If a designer can draw the scheme, they can project manage, cost control, and implement the process from start to finish. The approach closes possible gaps in communication between designer, other directly appointed consultants, main contractors, and suppliers. The result is a seamless process, delivering contracts on time and to budget.

The indicated landscape contours are a marriage of a site survey and Google-Earth technology, which provides an extremely accurate representation of the landscape we are working with.

Space Projects were appointed by Toyota GB Plc to formulate a blueprint for their “Sustainable Retail Centres ‘” throughout the U.K.
Being current brand guardians for Toyota GB Plc and having completed a successful roll out programme for 190 + sites, Space Projects are ideally placed to identify ‘eco technologies’ that will compliment and enhance the operational demands of Toyota Centres.
The study looked at every component and operation of a typical Toyota Centre to identify opportunities to minimize environmental impact through reducing energy use, generating energy, saving water, rainwater harvesting, recycling.
In tandem with environmental benefits, the study demonstrated commercial benefits via life cycle cost savings for the Retail Centres.
The realization of these works will be translated into Toyota’s new showrooms during the in the first half of 2011.
