From the Columbus Public Schools website: "AIMS arts specialists in Dance, Drama, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music and Visual Art teach in both arts classes as regular teachers and in traditional academic classes as arts impact teachers. Teachers of the traditional academic disciplines participate in the arts classes. Eighth grade students "major" and "minor" in their favorite arts."

Everett Middle School was built in 1898 and was the original North High School for Columbus Ohio until 1925.

Now the Arts IMPACT Middle School in Columbus Ohio.

According to their website, "he Arts I.M.P.A.C.T Middle School is a positive learning environment where high expectations are reached through the integration of arts and academics. I.M.P.A.C.T. is an acronym for Interdisciplinary Model Program in the Arts for Children and Teachers. Using the I.M.P.A.C.T. model, teachers use instructional strategies that encourage students to use their multiple intelligences. Studies have demonstrated that by using multiple instructional strategies, students retain and comprehend material on a more concrete level. Students at the arts I.M.P.A.C.T. Middle School will regularly engage in thematic units and projects that involve several academic and arts courses. Problem solving and cooperative learning are a central feature of the AIMS (Arts I.M.P.A.C.T. Middle School) teaching philosophy."

What if all public schools operated as such?

From the Columbus Public School website:

"The Arts Impact Middle School at Everett provides a positive learning environment, using the integration of arts and academics to challenge students to reach high expectations. AIMS, the Arts Impact Middle School, provides a continuation of the educational success of students leaving Arts Impact Elementary programs and to offer interested students new to Arts Impact Education an opportunity to participate as new Impact students. Qualified students needn’t be artistically talented, but should exhibit an appreciation for the Arts and a preference for learner initiated, hands-on education."

I created a Personal Kanban to use in when I go grocery shopping. I created it on the inside of a folder. Just open it up and it fits nicely right over the top basket in the cart. It's always visible and easy for me to see what I am looking for next. (I had a bad habit of leaving my lists by the last product I picked up in the store or just forgetting items on my list!) This worked out really well. I already have a change I'd like to use for the next time I am going to use different color post-its for different items in the store. Example: yellow will be dairy products, pink will be the meat items, green will be produce items, etc.

Lean is the dominant industrial organisation trend.

One of its drivers is rationalization and standardization. Therefore production floors are covered with lines & signs to define what belongs where. One color for each type of use, signs to identify walkways, forklift routes, different types of work in progress…

Another driver of Lean is Change, with the so called continuous improvement. Processes are in place to review processes and eliminate wastes. In this process (kaizen…) layouts change, machines, stock, routes change place, change form… and the marking and signs need to evolve.

As they know things are bound to change regularly, the lean teams use paints, and even simple tape to mark the floors. Their system is therefore fragile and does quickly become damaged.

I found it wierd that this rational structured systematic system finished by producing chaotic yet graphic floor marks… in an ephemere forw which will disappear when the next kaizen will require a new layer of paint.

I shoot these images with a simple iPhone, without any particular caution for light… this again is an habit of lean teams which, in order to help and document their process improvement take frequent pictures of the situations (before / after change) using their company phones. The rough and sometimes blurry quality of the images is not their concern. They need to go fast to the next line, to the next kaizen.

Age discrimination seems to be invisible to people. The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 protect people from discrimination in employment and vocational training but people still do not have the same protections because of age as they would for Gender, Race or Disability. Its almost exactly one year since the introduction of the Age regulations.

* This legislation has been superseded by the Equality Act 2010

Love that cover. It was designed by Ms. Paola Bulcão Manica, who sees TK as being about, "People collaborating in a building process." Perfect.

Nice depiction of human endeavor by Marco, aka Morcky. (www.morcky.com)

An important influence on Toyota Kata.

Improvement-kata capability development in your organization depends on how much coaching capability there is.
