Short Eared Owl - Asio flammeus

Norfolk

Over much of its range, short-eared owls occurs with the similar-looking long-eared owl. At rest, the ear-tufts of long-eared owl serve to easily distinguish the two (although long-eared owls can sometimes hold its ear-tufts flat). The iris-colour differs: yellow in short-eared, and orange in long-eared, and the black surrounding the eyes is vertical on long-eared, and horizontal on short-eared. Overall the short-eared tends to be a paler, sandier bird than the long-eared.

The short-eared owl occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia; thus it has one of the most widespread distributions of any bird. A. flammeus breeds in Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the Galápagos Islands. It is partially migratory, moving south in winter from the northern parts of its range. The short-eared owl is known to relocate to areas of higher rodent populations. It will also wander nomadically in search of better food supplies during years when vole populations are low.

Hunting occurs mostly at night, but this owl is known to be diurnal and crepuscular as well. Its daylight hunting seems to coincide with the high-activity periods of voles, its preferred prey. It tends to fly only feet above the ground in open fields and grasslands until swooping down upon its prey feet-first. Several owls may hunt over the same open area. Its food consists mainly of rodents, especially voles, but it will eat other small mammals such as mice, ground squirrels, shrews, rats, bats, muskrats and moles. It will also occasionally predate smaller birds, especially when near sea-coasts and adjacent wetlands at which time they attack shorebirds, terns and small gulls and seabirds with semi-regularity. Avian prey is more infrequently preyed on inland and centers on passerines such as larks, icterids, starlings, tyrant flycatchers and pipits.

from Le Nuvole - poem by Fabrizio De Andrè

Ammophila arenaria is a herbaceous plant of the Poaceae family, widespread in the Mediterranean basin and on the Atlantic coasts of France, Spain and Portugal. Although it originates from the European coasts, it was introduced to other continents to stabilize the sand dunes, so now it is found on coastal dunes around the world.

As an aforementioned peak geek it was a primary objective to see and admire the tallest peak on the continent. Took 6 days of anxious waiting and anticipation before the clouds finally cleared and I saw it in all it's glory. Yes, there was some ugly dancing...

Denali has two significant summits: the South Summit is the higher one at 20,310 feet (6,190 m), while the North Summit has an elevation of 19,470 ft (5,934 m). The North Summit slightly in view here.

Happy 4th of July to my American friends! Wishing everyone a wonderful week.

Here in Brazil we are already counting down to the summer, me and family countdown to vacations. And in this vacation, in early December, we will cross the continent and land in Portugal to know the land of the discoverers. Enjoy the cold weather, and enjoy good Portuguese cuisine and beautiful cities.

his ride is a must. Beautiful landscape and coves

It is a beautiful ballad that offers extraordinary views of the coast, beaches and surrounding towns like Toulon.

Originally, the island of Giens was similar to its neighbors, the islands of Hyères. Until the day when, thousands of years ago, there was slowly a most curious natural phenomenon of all the Mediterranean: the double tombolo (the two sandy cords that connect the island to the continent).

The hike on the peninsula of Giens is a loop of 6km around the port of Madrague. It is a stroll of astonishing richness that goes through different environments, ranging from the coastal pine forest to the dune, passing by the coast. Landscapes as diverse as surprising to discover!

Cabo da Roca is a cape which forms the westernmost extent of mainland Portugal and continental Europe.

They are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, particularly the former sections Tsutsuji (evergreen) and Pentanthera (deciduous). Azaleas bloom in the spring (May and June in the temperate Northern Hemisphere), their flowers often lasting several weeks. Shade tolerant, they prefer living near or under trees.Azaleas are generally slow-growing and do best in well-drained acidic soil (4.5–6.0 pH). Fertilizer needs are low. Some species need regular pruning. Azaleas are native to several continents including Asia, Europe and North America. They are planted abundantly as ornamentals in the southeastern US, southern Asia, and parts of southwest Europe. In addition to being renowned for its beauty, the azalea is also highly toxic—it contains andromedotoxins in both its leaves and nectar, including honey from the nectar. 24786

The third country of the series and also the third continent .Malaysian Borneo is certainly one of the most exotic places we have visited we were there in the spring of 2013 We stayed for a couple of nights in a small village called Kundasang which is in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu on the edge of the National Park. This is a view from our hotel balcony showing some of the village and its lush vegetation in the background you can just see Mount Kinabalu.

Borneo is the third-largest island in the world, with an area of 288,869 sq miles The island is divided by the equator, roughly in half between the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

The island is politically divided among three states. The sovereign state of Brunei in the north makes up 1% of the territory. Approximately 73% of Borneo is Indonesian territory, and in the north, the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak make up about 26% of the island.

Hay muchas más especies que aún no han sido descritas. Se las encuentra en todos los continentes, excepto en la Antártida. Están en todos los hábitats donde hay plantas con flores (magnoliofitas o angiospermas). Están adaptadas para alimentarse de polen y néctar, usando el primero fundamentalmente como alimento para las larvas y el segundo como material energético. La especie más conocida es la abeja doméstica (Apis mellifera), a veces simplemente llamada “abeja”; esta especie es un insecto social que vive en enjambres formados por tres clases de individuos: reina, obreras y zánganos;

Miss Continent 2023: Russian Federation.

For 1st Challenge - A Music Journey, Album Cover&Favorite Genres, Tara goes for inspiration in the Russian Far Eastern side, to the republic Buryatia. This is a very special land around Baikal Lake, where the ways of Buryats, Russians, Mongolia, and China are crossed.

Tara loves ethnic music and recently discovered a new amazing musical group in ETHNO FUSION style named NAMGAR, with lead singer Namgar Lkhasaranova. Namgar (Tibetan "White Cloud") performs traditional music and songs of the Buryats and Mongols, as well as their interpretations of ancient folklore, using national musical instruments and outfits styles.

With much respect, Tara created a Tribute to singer Namgar and her musical heritage, taking as inspiration the album cover Nayan Navaa - the Land of our Ancestors. The land from which we came, a beautiful world. Our ancestors gave us an unambiguous explanation that in ancient times, our people lived in a very distant and beautiful southern land, which was called Naya Navaa (Nai Nava). This song was born after the people had left their land.

Dark Continent -III-, Skye

The lava-scarred Reykjanes peninsula lies on one of the world's major plate boundaries, the Mid Atlantic Ridge. According to the continental drift theory the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are continuously drifting apart with great forces under the gaping rifts. As the plates diverge, linear fractures, known as fissures form due to stresses created by the tension that builds up as the plates move away from each other.

One can cross the continental divide on the Bridge between two continents at Sandvík, a small footbridge over a major fissure which provides clear evidence of the presence of a diverging plate margin. The bridge was built as a symbol for the connection between Europe and North America.

True to it’s name, the rocks in this canyon really are this red. This is a short hike we took in a national park in Canada nestled in the Crown of the Continent. There are many jewels to be found in the Rockies. I was challenged by how to best capture the character of this place. I took a wide landscape image but that included people. This is a popular spot with tourists. I do like that wide shot and I will post it later. But I loved coming in closer to the shapes, layers and colors of the rock framing the glacial waters running through the canyon. Even the pebbles in the water were vibrant. It was a slightly rainy day which made the colors pop even more!
