Claros is one of the most important oracles of Apollo along with Delphi and Didyma.

The Oracle of Apollo at Claros is said to be founded in the 13th century B.C. According to the ancient sources, Manto is the founder and the first prophet of the oracle. Also, the sacred spring at Claros becomes an important oracle in the time of Mopsus,, Manto

s. Hearing Mopsus' fame, Clachas, the famous prophet in Troy War, comes to Claros to challenge Mopsus in a contest. The encounter of Calchas and Mosus was to prove fatal to the former. Calc had received a prophecy that he was doomed to die when he met a prophet greater than himself.

The oracle at Claros functions by means of water. The prophet drinks the water and utters the oracle and replies in hezameter form. This sacred spring still exists in the adyton bellow the ceilla of the temple. Prophets in Claros are called Thespiodos and they are always men beginning with Mopsus.

In early times, the personal consultations are not allowed at Claros. In the 4th century B.C., The first personal consultation occurs with Alexander the Great. He consults the oracle at Claros after he had a dream on Meeting Pagos and gets a response to found new Smyrna on Meeting Pagos. After Alexander the Great, Germanicus, the adoptive son of emperor Tiberius, visits Claros to consult the oracle but the prophet forcasts that is death would be premature and Germanicus dies within a year. With the beginning of personal consultations, Claros becomes the most important oracle in the 2nd century A.D. An abundant number of transcriptional records show that from many different cities in the Greek World even from North Africa and Great Britain came to Claros to consult the oracle for inquiries on contagious diseases, war, famine and paying homage. The transcriptions on monuments, steps and columns of the Temple of Apollo record the list of this kind of embassies.

Propylon, which acts as an entrance building to the sanctuary was built in the 1st Century B.C. The propylon has a square plan and it was built in Doric order. There are four columns on the southern side and two columns on the northern side of the building. Inscriptions on the orthostats, walls, antes and columns of the propylon bear the names of delegates with children who sang hymns to Apollo.

The Temple of Apollo at Claros measuring 26 x 46 meters was built in Doric order. In situ monumental cult statues of Apollo, Artemis and Leto were recovered in cella of the temple.

One of the most important finds at Claros is the Hecatomb, to the east of the temple which is dated back to the 2nd century B.C. The ancient sources tell exclusively about hecatombs but the only sample unearthed in sanctuary is the one found at Claros.

To the north of the Temple of Apollo, there is a smaller temple built in Ionic order along with an alter. Finds show that the alter and the temple are dedicated to Artemis.

There are honorary monuments from Hellenistic and Roman periods on the "Sacred Way" in the sanctuary. They are conspicuous for including monuments in honor of Polemaios and Menippos in the Hellenistic Period; Lucullus, Valerius Flaccus and Cicero's brother Quintus in the Republican Period and Sextus Appuletus under the Principate. Claros benefited by Roman emperors, beginning with Augustus' regn. Claros is deserted in the 4th century A.D. with the rise of Christianity. (description from sign on sight)
