Destination Unknown Sequel: Legalized Torture: Skinny Seats For Fat Passengers - IMRAN™

I had my first flight as an unaccompanied child in Pakistan more than 50 years ago in the glory days of PIA. I was a cute chubby kid but even the economy seat on Boeing aircraft of that era could have seated nearly two of me.

Now, half a century later, even half of an average American adult has to squeeze into what airlines still insist on calling “seats”. My aviation fascination and passion for flying have not waned. But even as a not too fat or wide-ass adult the width of most airlines’ seats is nothing but legalized torture.

Having decently long legs I do appreciate the somewhat back-to-normal seat-to-seat distance you can see in this photo. But don’t be fooled. The extra space is because it is an exit-row seat. Next, look at the sexy svelte shape of the seat in front of me. Now imagine the typical person ahead of you at a grocery checkout or airline check-in line fitting in that. Exactly. Impossible.

Even more illustrative of the problem is the width of armrests which are also the separation between adjacent passengers. Today’s armrests are now literally *narrower* than two fingers width. It’s true. I’ve measured them and taken pictures too. I know what I’d like to do with those two fingers and where I’d like to shove my full arm. 😏😀

I would love to see the CEOs of Boeing, Delta, and the seat manufacturer try to sit in three adjacent seats for 3, much less 6 or 12, hours. Ideally they should sit for a three days long congressional inquiry — while being kept belted in those seats, together! 💺💺💺

What do you think? In the meantime, that vision of them unable to even squirm in their seats will make me smile as I enjoy my love of flying with gratitude. ✈️❤️🙏

Sorry Wrong Numbers™: The Way Apple Pricing & Trade-In Offers Work.... - IMRAN™

In full disclosure, I am a MacUser since 1984, and (mostly) love (most of) my Apple products. My day job is with Microsoft. But this tongue in cheek comment in the meme is based on reality. Apple did a good thing when it started offering trade-in offers to switch to newer model iPhones or even Apple Watch devices.

Then some beancounter just couldn't help it. They decided to find a way to screw loyal customers who had paid massive full prices for top of the line models with basically peanuts values on trade-in.

That is what made me comment that when Apple's next super-duper-I-don't-even-try-price-it maxed out Mac Pro comes out it may add up to $60,000 but a week later the beancounters there would maybe offer $60 in trade-in value for those. One hopes they learnt some embarrassing lessons from that whole recent episode and it does not happen this way.

Campaign trail blazes Oregon

Democrats push for crucial Oregon votes last week with simultaneous local stops

By: Vanguard staff and wire reports

Issue date: 5/13/08 Section: News

Both Democratic presidential candidates campaigned a few miles from each other in the Portland-area on Friday as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton looked to garner voter support in hopes of solidifying an Oregon primary victory on May 20.

The nominees held rallies throughout the state at the end of last week. Oregon's support has become an important part of the ongoing battle for the Democratic nomination.

Sen. Barack Obama began his visit to Oregon with an invite-only stop at Vernier Software and Technology in Beaverton and discussed education, healthcare and taxes with a small group of employees.

"Everywhere I go, I am impressed by how everyone shares faith in simple dreams like education," Obama said.

Education was a topic of interest to Vernier employee Janeene Sallman, a mother of two, who asked, "What is your stance on No Child Left Behind?"

Obama responded, "The original purpose of No Child Left Behind was right," but added that many of the goals of the program have been lost as instructors increasingly teach for the tests instead of fostering creativity and useful learning.

Another employee asked Obama about higher education funding as the worker wondered how he was going to pay for his tuition as a college-bound Cal Poly engineering student. Obama described a plan to expand the federal grant system, lower the interest rate of student loans, and take private banks, and what he referred to as "the middle man," out of the lending process for student loans.

In addition, Obama outlined a plan that would provide a $4,000 credit that students could use for college after they donate time in organizations such as the AmeriCorps, Peace Corps or similar organizations.

Obama explained his approach to the healthcare crisis by detailing a plan that would bring healthcare professionals, industry leaders and the public together in a transparent process aimed at providing affordable healthcare for every American.

"Drug and health insurance companies would get a seat at the table, but they couldn't buy every chair," he said, alluding to the Bill Clinton-era attempt at reforming healthcare and the strong influence big business has played in past legislation.

An accountant from Vernier asked Obama how he planned to pay for the proposed programs and he responded by saying he would get United States out of Iraq, close tax loopholes and create a cap and trade system for carbon that would generate money to be used in government programs.

At the same time-on the other side of the West Hills-Clinton held a private event at Doernbecher Children's Hospital at OHSU, and spoke briefly on universal healthcare, criticizing Obama's version for mandating coverage only for children, and not also for adults.

"An artificial distinction between children and adults is unworkable," Clinton said. "You've got to have a seamless healthcare system which covers every single person. My plan does, my opponent's doesn't."

She added, "This is a big difference in this campaign. It's not a difference of politics so much as commitment … How can anyone run to be the Democratic nominee and not have a universal healthcare plan?"

Clinton's plan is reminiscent of auto insurance mandates. Under it, all Americans would be required to purchase health insurance, which would be underwritten by employers and the government. She has said the costs of such a system could be covered by eliminating tax cuts for households earning more than $250,000 a year, and by finding savings in the current system.

Speaking to the difference between the two plans, Obama has previously said that Clinton wants to "force" everyone to purchase health insurance, while he prefers to emphasize reducing costs, so more people can afford coverage.

Former President Bill Clinton has been urging residents throughout the state to give Sen. Clinton an important victory in the state's primary. Today is the final day of his three-day, 13-city swing through Oregon. He visited Corvallis, Eugene and three coastal cities on Monday and will be in Roseburg, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls today.

Also in the area yesterday was the presumed Republican presidential nominee John McCain. The Arizona senator was at the Vestas Wind Technology plant in Portland to deliver a speech on combating global warming.

As the primary season comes to a close, it remains unseen which candidate will gain the Democratic nomination.

Clinton is hoping to pull off a come-from-behind victory in Oregon, while Obama's campaign manager has said that the state could yield enough pledged delegates to give Obama a majority, essentially securing the nomination.

Obama has 1,871.5 delegates against Clinton's 1,697, with only six states remaining in the primary. Political analysts have said that when ballots are tallied on May 20, Oregon is likely to be in Obama's corner.

My Costco receipt, after I was forced to submit to their search before they allowed me to leave the store.

According to Costco's membership agreement, they not only "reserve the right" to check your receipt as you leave, they can check your purse or person whenever they damn well feel like while you're in their store. No other retail establishment is legally able to do that, so I'm not yet convinced that Costco can just because they said so.

A Tesco store ripped off it's customers as Cadbury Bubbly normal and mint variety are R.R.P. is £1 for (90g of bubbly and 100g for mint) but at Tesco they are charging £1.48 and £1.49. (so that just incase you are not fully aware makes it 48/49p more.)

When I explored this shelf I took a picture of this but it was buy 1 get 2 free but there was only 1 left so how the hell were you going to get 2 free if there wasn't any.

This is my freshly 'aquashield' coated roof just 7 days after completion of the work. As you can see there is a strip where the coating hasn't taken and was washed off by the heavy rain we had yesterday. Over two weeks after signing the contract, the workmen finally came to clean my roof in preparation. A couple of days later I noticed that they had missed a strip down the LHS and called to inform them. When the workmen eventually showed up, they told me they had cleaned to the right of where the gutter had been painted cream. I pointed out that the council had painted my neighbour's gutters and accidentally painted a small portion of mine too and that the aquashield workmen had missed a strip 12-18 inches that was MY roof. They tried to talk me out of getting that strip cleaned and coated, telling me that "it will look silly because of the guttering". I insisted on having ALL of my roof done - obviously - 1) since that is what I was paying for and 2) kind of defeats the purpose of having your roof weatherproofed if there is a gap!!! Grudgingly they agreed. Another 2 weeks later they finally came and did the rest of the work and asked to be paid. I checked the roof front and back and pointed out that there was at least one broken tile that they should have replaced (according to the salesman) however they told me that only tiles broken to such an extent that they compromised the watertightness are replaced. I pointed out that that was not what I was told and they said that "the salesmen will say anything, but we don't do that". So I called the office and said that I was witholding the final payment until I was satisfied. Someone at the office phoned the workman and he said he had no tiles left in the van but would be back the next day to replace it and collect the payment. They did so and were given the cheque in payment. That was last week. Yesterday it rained here all day, totally miserable. Today I went out with my sis (6Lell9) and was saying to her to look at my new roof and as you can see from the photos, it's not anything to be proud of. The strip that they hadn't washed the first time is rather obvious again because the coating is begining to wash off after just ONE heavy rain!!!! I called the local office immediately and was told someone would call me back - I'm still waiting but am just about to call them again as I'm not letting them put me off until Monday and have no idea if they finish early on a Friday. I AM NOT HAPPY!!!

Phoned them another twice, got cut off the first time!! Had to give all of my details and the complaint again as it had obviously NOT been passed on to the person in charge. I have now been told that the workman will contact me 'sometime' next week. I imagine that he'll try and talk me out of having his shoddy workmanship fixed as that's what he's tried so far.

If and when aquashield rectify this problem, I'll take the photos offline. But until then they are staying and if the problem isnt resolved quickly then these photo will be going to every consumer organisation and website I can find along with every social networking site I can register to.

Moral of the story - don't be pressured into paying for work until you are 100% sure it is okay - I checked the roof and it looked fine AT THE TIME but clearly I should have waited until after a rainy day.

Any 2 for £3 on Matchmakers Mints and Orange thats alright if you can find the Orange variety. Trust me there wasn't any.

PE1247/B

In Support of McKenzie Friends

Petition PE1247

I write on behalf of Which? in support of Petition PE1247, submitted by Mr Stewart Mackenzie, which calls on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to introduce a McKenzie Friend facility in Scottish courts as a matter of urgency.

We are concerned that the inability of legal litigants in Scotland to be able to draw upon the support of a 'McKenzie Friend' in court is likely to prove a distinct disadvantage to those unable to find legal representation. The system, as you may know, has successfully operated in England and Wales for many years, allowing those who cannot access legal representation to draw upon the expertise of agencies and individuals who can provide such support. Indeed, McKenzie Friends are routinely permitted and are only denied where the judge believes it is fair or in the interests of justice to do so.

A McKenzie Friend typically:

Provides moral support for the litigant

Takes notes Helps with case papers and

Gives advice to the litigant on points of law, procedure and issues that the litigant may wish to raise in court.

Paying Guest accommodation is becoming a trend in cities; there is a great chance that the newcomers to the city can be cheated into paying huge deposits and charges for various facilities, and finally ending up with no promises fulfilled by the owner. As a precaution and safety measure, it is recommended that anyone intending to go into Paying Guest accommodation should first and foremost prepare an agreement with clear terms and conditions with the owner.

Which? believes that where litigants cannot afford to, or are indeed unable to find, legal representation, the right to use a McKenzie Friend would be highly beneficial and could only result in a fairer hearing and outcome for members of the public in this situation. At the moment we are concerned that individuals are unfairly disadvantaged where they represent themselves in court, but are unable to take a McKenzie Friend with them to help support them during what can be a very difficult experience.

Ideally of course, we are keen to ensure people have good legal representation, but in our experience, it is not always possible for litigants to find a lawyer willing to represent them, even where they have a strong case, and many people simply cannot afford legal representation. In such circumstances it is quite inequitable that they should be denied some support and we can see no reason why the Government should not permit this.

Although some recent improvements have permitted construction litigants this facility, all other legal litigants are currently denied this support, which would improve access to justice and consumer redress in Scotland. Which? is the UK's largest independent consumer organisation, a charity funded by sales of our magazines and other services, and represents the consumer voice on many issues including legal services. We support Mr Mackenzie's petition and ask that you support it too.
