Pretty example of Grundig/Philps school of aesthetics around the turn of the 70's/80's*. It wouldn't be much longer before the distinctive products of mainland Europe would be replaced by generic rebranded clones.
*Radiomuseum.org gives the date for the set as 1977/78.
Dual equipment also had some aesthetic similarities with this. Piano key-type buttons like these were not common on Japanese or British equipment from this period.
Note the touch sensors (like those used by Philips) on left for radio presets. Socketry on the back was all DIN, unfortunately.
This beautiful set really deserved a much better photo set-up, but it looks as if I must have been in a significant hurry at the time. Pity. I no longer own it, and haven't ever seen another.
Marked up to aid my fault-finding exercise
The "stress" suffered by a couple of the components is fairly evident, and drew suspicion to V1 being the location of the fault which was preventing this set from working
Marked up to aid my fault-finding exercise.
I also removed the rather dodgy looking connection for the Belling-Lee "tape recorder connection" (bottom left) as it appears to be connected to the wrong place, when comparing the "as-built" with the theoretical schematic . . .
The connection goes to the grid of the AF output section of the double-triode AF amplifier, with a 470k resistor bodged across there and chassis.
I don't like the idea of having a DC connection going to the outside world, this seems like bad practice to me.
The schematic however shows this connection going to the top of the volume control pot (pretty normal), but again directly connected, with no attempt at any DC blocking.
I think I might rewire this connector as an RF input jack ...
We estimate that a third of total consumer spending could become "social." This means that interactions on social platforms--friends recommending products, checking in at stores, sharing reviews, etc.--could influence $940 billion of consumption in the United States and Europe alone. Today, online social influence is greatest in electronics, computer hardware and software, and mobile phones.
The Ann Arbor RadioShack store is closing this weekend and given the grim state of the company it seems very unlikely they will look for a new location here. So I popped over and bought a few loose components (at 70% off) just for old time's sake. Probably my last Shack visit ever.
Two iconic brands from my youth gone in the same week…
It appears to be in "unrestored" condition, meaning that it will almost certainly need quite a few electrolytic capacitors replacing.
I'm looking forward to fettling this unit.
It's a bit dusty in there, but it looks pretty unmolested (apart from the BNC socket modification).
"Proper" lacing on the cable loom, and a strategic P-clip on the mains cable - nice!
nick recoiling as rachel explains that the unplugged device may have capacitors that retain electricity.

McIntosh MC830 Amplifier
£5,795 Mono So you'll need two of these for stereo, !!!!
1-Channel Solid State Amplifier
300 Watts into 8 Ohms
480 Watts into 4 Ohm
MC830
1-Channel Solid State Amplifier
3 Year Limited Warranty
The MC830 is a 1-Channel Solid State Amplifier that features an open chassis industrial design similar to our popular MC275 Vacuum Tube Amplifier, and MA252 and MA352 Integrated Amplifiers. A pair of MC830s, when combined with a preamplifier (such as the matching C8 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier), source components like a turntable, CD player (see the matching MCD85 SACD/CD Player) or streaming music player, and a pair of speakers, can deliver a true-to-life home audio experience.
With a similar footprint to our MA252 Integrated Amplifier, the MC830 is a direct coupled output design that is rated at 300 Watts at 8 Ohms or 480 Watts at 4 Ohms. A fast-responding Dual Scale Watt meter gives an accurate readout of power output for both speaker impedances.
Our Monogrammed Heatsinks™ add visual appeal and will keep the MC830 running cool for optimum performance. Both a balanced and unbalanced input are included for connecting it to the rest of your home music system.
To protect your speakers and overall system, the MC830 includes two of our cornerstone home audio technologies. Our patented Power Guard® technology monitors the amplifier's output signal to protect your speakers against being over driven; if necessary, it makes real time micro adjustments to the input signal to prevent clipping that could damage your speakers. Another level of protection is Sentry Monitor™, our fuse-less short-circuit protection circuit that will disengage the MC830's output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels, and then will reset automatically when operating conditions return to normal.
Our patented Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts easily secure your speaker cables to prevent them from coming loose and possibly causing a short. The binding posts are gold-plated to prevent corrosion and ensure a quality audio signal is sent to your speakers. Power Control ports allow for easy system power up and shutdown by sending power on/off signals to other connected McIntosh components. The user selectable Auto Off feature will turn off the MC830 after 30 minutes if no audio signal is received.
A die cast aluminum name badge is affixed to each side of the chassis, and the front, top and rear of the chassis is polished to a mirror finish. The MC830 features a black glass front panel with silver trim, a blue Watt meter, an illuminated logo, and control knobs. Contact your local dealer to learn more.
