Most people mistake professional business consultancy as a troubleshooting exercise that a company undertakes to manage crisis. Even the business owners, especially the small and relatively inexperienced ones, have similar notions and avail of their services only in cases where management looses control. However, services offered by professional consultants need not be bound by such limitations. Business consultants, in fact, are third party experts who influence how businesses, as well as governments and institutions make decisions.

Irish pubs feature prominently in James Joyce's "Ulysses", and it is true that wherever the Irish have gone in the world they have set up places of conviviality. The Irish impact on the colony of Van Diemen's Land came initially with the arrival of the convicts. Many of the Irish convicts were in fact political prisoners, and almost all of them were Catholics.

This Irish pub, which is now known as "The Irish" with the slogan "Drinking Consultants", was founded in 1835 as "The Hibernian" by freed convict Josiah Pitcher. Of course the current building, with its Art Deco influences, dates from around 100 years after that.

Gunwharf Quays is a shopping centre located in the Portsea area of the city of Portsmouth in England. It was constructed in the early 21st century on the site of what had once been HM Gunwharf, Portsmouth. This was one of several such facilities which were established around Britain and the Empire by the Board of Ordnance, where cannons, ammunition and other armaments were stored, repaired and serviced ready for use on land or at sea. Later known as HMS Vernon, the military site closed in 1995, and opened to the public as Gunwharf Quays on 28 February 2001 after six years of reconstruction (which included the restoration of some of the surviving 18th and 19th-century Gun Wharf buildings). The landmark Spinnaker Tower, which stands close to the site on pilings in Portsmouth Harbour, was opened on 18 October 2005.

The Spinnaker Tower is a 170-metre (560 ft) landmark observation tower. It is the centrepiece of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour, which was supported by a National Lottery grant. The tower's design was chosen by Portsmouth residents from a selection of three different designs in a 1998 public poll. It has three viewing platforms one on top of the other at heights of 100 m, 105 m and 110 m.

The tower was designed by local firm HGP Architects and engineering consultants Scott Wilson and built by Mowlem. The Spinnaker Tower reflects Portsmouth's maritime history through its design and is named after a spinnaker, a type of sail that balloons outward. The tower was opened on 18 October 2005.

The tower is owned by Portsmouth City Council and is operationally managed by Continuum Leading Attractions, a cultural attractions group based in York. Continuum also runs five other visitor attractions across the country.

Gunwharf Quays has 90 outlet stores and 30 restaurants, bars and cafés. Gunwharf Quays plays host to a 14-screen Vue cinema, 26-lane Bowlplex Bowling Alley, Aspex art gallery, Grovenor casino, a Holiday Inn Express and a Tiger Tiger nightclub.

The waterfront overlooks Gunwharf Quays Marina which can accommodate all types of craft including luxury yachts up to 80 metres and has often played host to national and international sailing events. The Berkeley Group plc was responsible for the development of Gunwharf Quays, which is now owned by Land Securities. The area has also become a residential area of Portsmouth, and houses many apartment buildings. In 2012, the penthouse at no 1 Gunwharf Quays (the tall building in the background) was on sale for £2.5 million.

With a height: 29 storeys, almost 100m the building is the tallest residential skyscraper on the South Coast of England. The design of No.1 Gunwharf Quays is modelled by the architects on a large funnel and represents steam, while the nearby Spinnaker is based on a sail.

The Hong Kong Port connects to the HZMB from a site with approximately 130 hectares of reclaimed land. The port’s Passenger Clearance Building (PCB) is iconic, with aesthetically striking architecture. Its long span curved roof mimics the surrounding sea and offers unobstructed views. Its skylights filter natural light to minimize power usage for the whole building. Tree-like columns support the roof and provide an airy feel inside.

Given the project’s proximity to the airport, our team had to overcome airport height restrictions and limited space onsite, together with the mandate to complete the PCB in 30 months whilst the whole Port was to be completed in about four years. The design and construction of the PCB roof were the most notable innovations to meet these challenges.

Its key features include:

•The integration of BIM and 3D scanning. In 2014, the use of digitalization in civil engineering was still in its infancy in Hong Kong. By overlaying the complex roof design and as erected models, any out of tolerance areas could be readily identified and rectified.

•Pre-fabrication of a total of 81 roof segments, with all necessary fittings and building services including pre-installed MEP completed offsite, form the roof that stretches to the size of nine FIFA football pitches. The largest segment measures 61 meters x 25 meters and weighs 680 tons and remains the largest and heaviest spatial structural frame for a building as of 2022.

•First ever use of installation by vertical lifting and then horizontal jacking of this scale in Hong Kong. This not only overcame the space and height limitations but also allowed parallel construction of the concrete works below to accelerate project time. On-site safety was also enhanced by the subsequent reduction in the need for working at height.

Since then, innovative construction methods, including Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and MiMEP, inspired by Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) have become important elements in Hong Kong’s construction industry.

Sustainable features at the Port such as the District Cooling System, and the use of treated effluent from the onsite tertiary sewage treatment plant for toilet flushing helped earn the project two platinum and one gold BEAM Plus awards.

The port also contains other associated infrastructure and auxiliary facilities, such as:

•Cargo clearance facilities

•Road network

•Transit interchange

•Traffic control surveillance system

•Accommodations for frontline departments such as Immigration and Customs and Excise

Awards and Recognition:

•HKIE Grand Award 2023 – Grand Prize (Infrastructure Category)

•Hong Kong Green Building Council BEAM Plus Award 2020 – Platinum

•The Lighthouse Club Safety Leadership Awards 2016 – Gold (Architect-Consultant Category)

1. Treading water...

This is a deep contemplation on who is the one to decide just how amazing or beautiful or smart or capable you are anyway? Sometimes we just tread water and make it through the day or even swim against the tide when it comes to our own growth and development. Sometimes we wait for the priest to tell us, or a teacher or therapist or spouse or any outside consultant to bring us to the next level. As kids we fall down so often, learning to walk, riding a bike, skating or skiing...we just got up and hold on to the vision that we could do it. That we just might be as amazing as we sometimes allow ourselves to think we are when it comes to what is in our heart.

2. Reviving Energy...

Yes it takes some effort to get the mechanism going again if it has been shut off for a while. Take the time and focus to find it again...it will change everything. Breathing, meditating, doodling, playing an instrument, hugging a tree, taking a photo of something that makes your insides bubble with enthusiasm.

3. Sustaining Trust in Wings...

It's often easier to see other people's gifts and talents than our own. No one is so special as not to have at least one. If we are honest, we sometimes don't spend the necessary time to develop it and LET IT LEAD US into knowing ourselves better. We've come here to play in the way that we did as children. Immersed in deep imagination and seeing the next adventure long before we even enter the scene...trust in those jumps and leaps into fulfillment.

4. Free to Be

Who can tell you who you are? Who can measure your success? Who can judge your character? Who looks back at you when you look in the mirror? Arise, see the winged version of your soul and energize it again. Time waits for no one but generously pours itself through every breath.

Dare yourself to not be ordinary today.

With a heavy heart, Junior Doctors will be striking in the upcoming weeks.

The NHS is a great institution. Junior doctors provide the backbone of medical service in the NHS. They are the consultants, GP's and medical leaders of the future.

They have studied hard and often work well beyond their hours because they care.

They have missed birthdays, weddings and even funerals because of their dedication to the job. Who do you trust? A politician or a doctor?

Who is more likely to put a glossy spin on the truth to satisfy their own agenda?

Incidentally who has written a book about how to privatise the NHS (clue - not the doctor)?

What's the fuss about?

Junior doctor doesn't just mean a newly graduated doctor, it includes all doctors up to the level of consultant.

These are the doctors that will treat your sick children, comfort and care for the dying, treat patients needing emergency operations, provide pain relief during childbirth. There's so much more that junior doctors do but the list is too long. I've done all of the above on the last few days (and nights). Junior doctors work hard, often staying late, unpaid. We miss birthdays/weddings/life events. We care about our patients.

The new contract proposed by Mr Hunt is neither safe nor fair.

He will take away safeguards meaning that doctors could end up working long and unsafe hours.

He will effectively penalise women who take maternity leave. People doing research and academic study will also be effectively penalised.

Junior doctors are highly trained. They come out of medical school with thousands of pounds of debt (up to 80k). The starting salary is 23k. Junior doctors do not choose this profession for the money. There are many more well paid jobs a trained junior doctor could do. We care about our patients.

We don't want a return to the old days where junior doctors had no safeguards over the numbers of hours worked. Do you want a tired, demoralised doctor making decisions about your health or your loved one's health?

These proposals are resulting in the doctors of tomorrow disappearing- large numbers are going abroad, where they are more valued, and fewer students are considering Medicine as a possible career.

Again. Who do you trust? Doctors or a politician who was written a book about privatising the NHS?

Several years ago local activists with two UNICEF consultant and embassy staff created an acrobatic school. The school recruits from street children and now has 125 children of various ages. As well as the acrobatic arts the school also teaches the children to read and write and craft skills that support the performances.

The school has been extraordinarily successful and has worked with Circus Universalis and Cirque de Soleil. International talent from these circuses and more such as Archaos have come to teach.

I was stunned by the quality of the children’s performance, it is simply the best small project that I have yet seen supported by UNICEF. It was impossible to capture the power of the performance in pictures; but I will be back to have another go but the best is to see the performance. The school does full rehearsals every Saturday. Poignantly the school is in the grounds of the ‘Stadium of the 28th September’ scene of last years massacres. The school makes tours of the interior of the country with shows that raise awareness on social and societal issues.

If you cannot make it to Conakry the school regularly does tours of the USA and France. I met with kids who had just returned from touring the US they were teaching the next generation. An unimaginable accomplishment for children who had until a few years ago had been sleeping rough in the port of Conakry. The next tour will be in April in France where they will be at the festival of Angouleme in April.

The next step is to create a sister school; a percussion academy in the same site.

As ICU Consultant and Clinical Director of Support Services, Meera faced a “sheer fear of the unknown” as she treated “suddenly very ill” patients. In this “very difficult year to cope”, she worked hard to ensure there was “enough equipment, medicines, even oxygen.” She feels the NHS has “been severely affected” as “staff have worked extremely hard physically and mentally”, with a “big burden” now to deal with after “non-essential work had to stop”. She hopes “more mental support” will be made available as “witnessing colleagues being ill [has] been very traumatic”, and “not being able to deal with all the bereaved has been very difficult too.” She hopes “in future the vaccine works and we get this problem under control.”

Meera is one of 67 NHS staff I photographed across George Eliot Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic first wave.

"Humans of the Pandemic" features portraits and thoughts from many roles incl doctors, domestics, maternity, mortuary, nurses, pathology, pharmacy, physio, and surgery – to name a few.
