Looking through some dusty files I found a packet of 6x4.5 size colour slides. They were taken of a model railway which was built in 1987, it had a feature article in the last ever edition of "Model Railway Constructor" in June 1987. The layout was built by my friend John Cox, I scratch-built or modified kits for some of the buildings, provided rolling stock and did the photography and Don Gatehouse did a thorough job in researching and providing photographs of the location it was based on, Coombe Junction in Cornwall.

The basis for the layout was a small simple layout that anyone could build in a modern small house or flat it had 3 3ft x 1ft base boards.

We managed to cram in clay dries, Carradon Junction station and a very truncated branch to the seaside "Causland Beach" The layout was quite successful and John took it to a number of model railway shows, by today's standards it was unsophisticated but it was of it's time. I still have the locos and the single car but they have not been run since 1994 when I abruptly stopped any model railway involvement.

In this scene 25233 is on engineering duty as the mechanical signal box id demolished and the signals have the arms removed.

Out with Ectro testing out Dennis Calvert's circle machine style. Usually i can't do this, since i'm alone, but i convinced Ectro that we should try it out. The tunnel was so foggy from the temperature difference between the inside and outside that we had to use a air blower to keep the lens un-fogged each minute and a half or so. This was about the longest photo we could take at about a minute.

Portrait of commander (later rear admiral) George Henry Rock (1869 - 1946), who later became chief constructor of the United States Navy. My colorization of an image in the Library of Congress archive. The photo is not dated, but my estimate is ab. 1920.

George Rock graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1889. During World War 1 he served as Construction Officer of the Navy Yard, New York. For his "exceptionally meritorious service" he was awarded the Navy Cross. In 1929 - 1932 Rock was Chief of the U.S. Navy Bureau of Construction and Repair. After his retirement Rock served among other things as head of the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. In 1933 he was elected president of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine engineers.

HSU159 Scammell Constructor was operated by W. Bull and Son of Tideswell, Buxton.

I have been unable to find any information on the history of this vehicle, either before or after the date of the photograph. I assume it was originally a military vehicle and I also wondered why so many of these heavy recovery lorries had Scottish (Glasgow) registrations.

A regular visitor to shows and rallies The Avonhill is an Ex Pickfords 1958 Scammell Constructor.

Legendary Norwegian boat constructor Johan Anker (1871 - 1940) posing in 1928 on board the new 12-Metre class boat Magda XI, which he had designed for businessman Alfred W.G. Larsen (the man on the right).

Both men were excellent sailors. Already in 1912 Larsen´s 12-Metre yacht Magda IX - designed by Anker - won the gold medal in the Stockholm Summer Olympics, with Anker as helmsman and Larsen among the crew. During his lifetime Larsen owned altogether thirteen 10-Metre, 12-Metre and 15-Metre boats, all of them named Magda, which was the name of his first wife.

In the early 1930s Larsen sold Magda XI (with sail number N -7) to the US, where she was renamed Cantitoe (sail number was US-7).

The only mention of her in the US I found in the New York Times August 7, 1933: "American Y.C. RUN IS LED BY CANTITOE, 12-Meter Yacht"

The International 12-Metre Association data page mentions that Cantitoe was "wrecked and buried", but does not give any date.

Another highlight to go with a few others last weekend was this little gem- E713FHG is a very tidy Preston, Lancashire registered 1987 Leyland Constructor 6 tanker that appears to still see some use with its Kent based owners.

ULY 904 - This well presented Ex Pickfords 75 Ton heavy haulage tractor was photographed by me at the Cromford Steam Rally in August 2019.

Pickfords usually used Junior Constructors in pairs one pulling and the other pushing one of their girder frame heavy haulage trailers, a set-up that was very much dependant on the weight of the load.

The image showing "Seabed Constructor" in the harbour of Bergen, Norway, is available from Norwegian-based Swire Seabed A/S, which offers specalised under-ocean works. Swire Seabed is a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Swire Pacific Ltd., which is part of the Anglo-Hong Kong conglomerate John Swire & Sons Ltd.

"Seabed Constructor" was in the news recently, as this vessel will undertake the resumption of the search for the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 that mysteriously went missing on 2014-03-08. Flight MH370 was enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8th March, 2014, when it went off-course and disappeared with 239 on-board. Other than a few pieces of debris washed up along the African coast, the rest of the widebody airliner was never located.

A chance conversation with a couple of flickr friends recently about the name Swire and its long association with Hong Kong flagship airlines Cathay Pacific reminded me about Swire's many other little-known operations. Swire Group has operations from high in the sky to deep under the sea!

Other than having named myself after the Yorkshire family that founded the historic Anglo-HK business, I've no true association with Swire Pacific Group. I've never even owned shares of Swire Pacific Ltd.
