ENG: This is how you secure broken houses in Berlin. A curiosity with Berlin charm. A bit broken, a bit weird. The three lashing straps system has been in place for over a year now, since 27 November 2017 to be precise.
What had happened? A (Berlin transport companies) BVG bus of line 100 crashed into the supporting pillar of the corner building when turning off at the junction Leipziger Straße / Wilhelmstraße. The force of the impact tears a formwork from its anchorage. The massive concrete part, weighing about five tons, crashes onto the road and buries a small car underneath it. Fortunately, nobody was injured. Now Berlin has a new landmark.

Otherwise, there's tipping and accidents. We have heard that Converse intends to correct this major issue. We look forward to this ramp becoming a model entrance on Newbury Street, Boston, MA.

We saw alot of reconstruction activity along Newbury Street - but noted that few projects appear to be adding in the most necessary sustainable feature of all- an Accessible Primary Entrance that will allow everyone to enter through the same door. Converse has attempted to do so, with the addition of this switchback ramp.
However, this ramp currently has a significant problem: the cross slope is excessive, about 6.5%.
Both Federal and State architectural Access codes stipulate that cross-slopes should not exceed 2%.
Otherwise, there's tipping and accidents. The State architectural access building code is the minimal necessary for the safety and access of the general public, including wheelchair users, people using canes, walkers, strollers, etc., - it's easy to follow, and should be respected!
This switchback ramp to the Converse store allows step-users to enter at either side, while rolling pedestrians are granted entrance nearest 350 Newbury Street. This is one of the rare "accessible" entrances on Newbury Street.
However, as built, this ramp has a significant problem: the cross slopes are excessive, about 6.5%.
Both Federal and State architectural Access codes stipulate that cross-slopes should not exceed 2%.
Otherwise, there's tipping and accidents. We have heard that Converse intends to correct this major issue.
Photographer noted that most people ignored the steps and simply took the ramp- which is an architectural element that doesn't segregate any class of people.
The steps also lack handrails, which should extend down to the street. That is an important safety feature, and hopefully will be corrected when the ramp is rebuilt with a usable cross-slope.
No usable sidewalks along Beacon Street, from Charles to the State House, means that rolling pedestrians have to go out onto Beacon Street up against the traffic- an extremely dangerous activity that other pedestrians don't have to contend with.
Because our built environments are still constructed- and maintained- in a manner that endangers and threatens the lives of an entire class of people, Curb Cuts are a 21st century civil rights issue in America..

However, as built, this ramp has a significant problem: the cross slopes are excessive, about 6.5%. (the run slopes are excellent- they do not exceed 8.3 and are, in fact, approximately 4.5% in mid-ramp)
Both Federal and State architectural Access codes stipulate that cross-slopes should not exceed 2%.
Otherwise, there's tipping and accidents. We have heard that Converse intends to correct this major issue.

This limited use elevator barely holds a person who uses the C500 chair. It doesn't allow that person to be accompanied by anyone unless that other person happens to be a really skinny peep without a chair. the elevator doors don't close unless someone pushes the lock- which is a bit broken, by the way. And there's no maneuvering room to get in and out, so we lose things in here as we bump up against the sides. All in all, Limited use elevators, aka "LULAs" are a poorly considered architectural choice in any public facility. Their usefulness is limited to single family residences that have entirely visitable first floors.
