Apparently someone was upset with his inheritance. Jeez Luke, why do you have to be such an jerk about this... I mean if it weren't for your father you never would have gotten that wicked cool bionic hand. Have a little respect.

This photograph is one of two purchased April 11, 2015 from a consignment antique shop in Essex Junction, Vermont. Both photos were sealed back-to-back in a plastic sleeve, so I didn't see the information on the back until after I bought it. I thought both might have been Vermont scenes. They're not.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!

A SECOND photograph attributed to Charles Lincoln Sweet has been found; taken in Mattoon, Illinois, circa 1900.

View it HERE.

*********************************************************************************

SECOND IMPORTANT UPDATE!

In spite of the annotation on the reverse, claiming this venue as Hutchinson, Kansas, evidence shows that this was taken on Broadway St. in Mattoon, Illinois.

*********************************************************************************

There's a lot going on here. First, the horse is suffering from a mild case of blurry-head syndrome. After studying many photos of this era, I can say it was a common affliction among horses as well as small children. The shadows suggest that the street runs in a north-south orientation and the subjects are facing south.

One man in the foreground is seated in a wagon, sporting a cigar, a fedora, and protective sleeves. He has shed his jacket, suggesting it's a warm day. The protective sleeves were popular with printers, accountants and office workers to protect their shirtsleeves from ink.

The man next to him, in the bowler hat, has been identified on the back of the photo as C. L. Sweet of Hutchinson, Kansas. I believe this is Charles Lincoln Sweet, a Hutchinson used-furniture restorer and salesman. Both men are nattily dressed.

Another person is visible across the street, next to Sweet's right shoulder. The faint "X" on his back suggests suspenders, so this is likely a jacketless man. Yet another gender-ambiguous person is visible in the distance at far right. That's it; that's everybody. So where is everyone? After all, Hutchinson is a city! The street is empty and relatively clean --considering the horses. Could this have been a Sunday or holiday?

I decided to try to determine where in Hutchinson this photo was taken. There are tons of details here, starting with a north-south brick street with a trolley track. The store fronts are a bit out of focus, but those that can be read look promising. Immediately above the horse's head is a sign reading "Kern_ C___a Store". Kern's Camera Store? No, "Camera" would not fit in that space. A more likely candidate is "China"; "Kern's China Store". Next to that is the Regal Tea and Coffee Store. At the top of the fedora is a sign reading "Dental Parlors". Above that are two signs, "Teeth $8.00" and "Crowns $5.00". Moving left, there is a sign over the door reading, "Painless Dental Parlors". Next to buggy-man's right arm is a store window reading, "Welch & Mc___y Hardware, Cutlery, and Sporting Goods" and "House Trimmings, Pumps, Paints & Oils". A bicycle is displayed in the store window, and another bicycle is visible at buggy-man's left elbow. Just above the bicycle is another store window that is illegible, but could be a bakery. C. L. Sweet's head is partially obscuring a grocer's sign.

I found some useful information in the Reno County City Directory Information at the Reno county, Kansas, GenWeb site. The 1918 Hutchinson, Kansas Telephone Directory listed Kern Bros., Ladies' Garments at 20 North Main St., Hutchinson. The same directory listed Smyser's Painless Dentists at 28 1/2 North Main, and B. J. Stuckey, D.D.S., Office 22 1/2 North Main. Having even-numbered addresses, these businesses would be on the same side of the street and near each other. I also found The C. W. Stevens Photo Studio at 23 1/2 North Main, which would be across the street from the dental parlors. He teamed up with Samuel Hirst, another photographer, and later, left the firm to Hirst. This has me wondering if C. W. Stevens or Samuel Hirst may have taken the picture.

According to the 1907 business directory, 28 North Main St. was known as the Montana Block. I found C. L. Sweet in the 1915 Hutchinson, Kansas, business directory at 9 South Main St. which would be a little south of where these men were posing.

I learned a good deal about C. L. Sweet from an article in the July 30, 1939 Hutchinson News Herald (page nine).

Sweets Approach 50th Wedding Anniversary

AFTER 50 years of married life matched by almost that many years residence in Hutchinson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Sweet, 5305 North Monroe, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Tuesday. A family dinner will be served in honor of the occasion and the Sweets will hold open house for their friends from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and evening. Jessie Menke came to Hutchinson with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. L, Menke, from Paris, Ill., in 1887 and she and Mr. Sweet were married August 1, 1889 in the Menke home on West First. Arriving here five years before his bride, Mr. Sweet came with his parents, the J. N. Sweets, from Springfield, Ill., His father was In the grocery and feed business but after Charles Sweet was grown he went into the furniture business, first at 20 West Sherman. "But I couldn't see the parades go by," the one-time furniture dealer complains, "so I had to move down to Main street," After a year In the West Sherman store he moved to 9 South Main where the Charles Crook furniture store is now and operated in that location a number of years. He continued in the furniture business In various locations until his retirement three years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Sweet have lived In Hutchinson throughout the 50 years of their married life except for a few years which they spent in Mattoon, Ill., In their secluded home far out on Monroe they live a leisurely life now, Mrs. Sweet busy with her quilt and other needlework and Mr. Sweet with his birds and goldfish. He has bird houses in profusion in his shady back yard and the birds that come each spring to take advantage of the Sweets' hospitality and set up housekeeping have come to be familiar friends of the landlords. In the outdoor fishpond, scores of goldfish make themselves at home, swarming to the surface of the pool whenever they catch a glimpse of the hand that feeds them. And if you're Interested in what food a goldfish likes, oatmeal Is their dish. "I do the cooking," Mr. Sweet boasts, "so that my wife can have more time for her quilts." And Mrs. Sweet doesn't contradict him. She has made 50 quilts "since the quilt craze started" she says, Women have always made quilts but it was not until seven or eight years ago that everyone went to work at it, she explains. Few of the half hundred quilts she has made have been of identical patterns. "When I finish one, I'm ready to try a new one," she says. With the couple for their anniversary will be their daughters, Mrs. Lester C. Pratz, 204 East 13th., and Mrs. Ethel Stauffer of Pasadena, Calif., and their son, Perry Sweet of Houston. They have four grandsons, Charles Pratz, 204 East 13th, Perry Stauffer of Sacramento, Maurice and Charles Stauffer of Pasadena, and one granddaughter, Beverly Ann Sweet of Houston. Last but definitely not least, the Sweets proclaim, is their great-grand daughter Thea Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pratz.

Jessie Blanche Menke Sweet died in 1948. Charles L Sweet died in 1959. They are buried in Hutchinson Eastside Cemetery. I am seeking descendants, and Hutchinson, Kansas information relative to this photo.
