Phenotypic plasticity and the "Hourglass" Biology
If you find a still pond with a smooth, motionless surface, reflecting the surroundings like a mirror, you're likely in a place inhabited by the blue princes, tadpoles. They need to live in still, calm ponds to carry out their vital process, metamorphosis, a drastic biological transformation through which a living being physically develops after birth or hatching. This involves notable and often abrupt changes in its body structure, physiology, and behavior until it becomes an adult. A tadpole has a small tail, which serves as both its safety and its engine.. It has no legs, and it breathes through gills, absorbing oxygen dissolved in the water. Throughout the metamorphosis that typically lasts ten to twelve weeks in many frog species, but even months or years in some, many morphological structures and physiological functions must change to adapt to terrestrial life. These include developing four legs, changing their respiratory system to a pulmonary one to breathe oxygen from the air, and losing their small but crucial tail through absorption. The genotype is the complete set of genetic information possessed by a living being, located in the nucleus of cells and inherited from the parents. The phenotype, on the other hand, is the observable and physical expression of these genes; it is the appearance of an organism, its morphological and functional characteristics, its behavior... all influenced by its daily environment. We do not see an organism's genotype, but rather its resulting phenotype. In evolutionary biology, there is a very important concept called "phenotypic plasticity," the capacity of genes or a single genotype to produce different phenotypes in their morphology, physiology, or behavior. It is a response to environmental variations. It acts as an adaptive mechanism, allowing rapid adjustments to new or changing conditions, enabling organisms to survive in changing or extreme environments. It is considered a key factor in the evolution of species and an important genetic basis for adaptation. One of the most striking examples is frogs. When water begins to run low in a pond due to lack of replenishment or evaporation, it becomes saturated with mineral salts. This is detected by the tadpole, triggering an alert signal and an increase in stress hormones, corticosteroids, secreted into the water. This mixture of both substances sets off alarm bells in all the tadpoles in the pond and is perceived as an imminent sign of danger. This presents them with two difficult choices. One possibility is to remain in the pond, waiting for rain or for the water level to rise.. But the future is impossible to predict, even for a tadpole. The second alternative is "phenotypic plasticity," a race against the biological clock that involves a sacrifice and consists of accelerating the metamorphosis process. This alternative is to stop growing and speed up the metamorphic transformation process to become an adult, reducing the transformation time that is necessary and vital for normal metamorphosis. But this comes at a high price. The main consequences are that the frog's body doesn't develop; it grows very little in volume, resulting in a tiny frog, generally only two or three centimeters long. Another characteristic is their low fat reserves. And of all the other characteristics that remain incomplete, the inability to properly develop their immune system makes them even more vulnerable. All these accelerated and incomplete changes make the frog extremely fragile, with a very uncertain future for survival. Ultimately, both options are a coin toss, a life-or-death gamble, a difficult decision. Staying in the pond waiting for rain is unpredictable and risks dying from desiccation. Growing into adulthood but paying the price of being very small and fragile is also a risky gamble where the chances of survival are difficult to predict. Complicated decisions in the face of complicated environmental situations. Anyway, don't worry about the tadpoles, about the princes charming, because in the end... it did rain...

This group of Greater Flamingos were performing their mating dance and display for dominance in Camargue, France.
The two flamingos in the center of this photography get their necks entangled with each other.
They quickly worked it out and then the group continued to perform the dancing ritual.
There are nine different postures during the courtship display and from these postures, there are more than 100 possible transitions between the postures.
The dance is a beautiful group behavior to watch and listen to.

Consequences in the Netherlands It is also getting warmer in the Netherlands and the sea level is rising. The main consequences of climate change for the Netherlands: The weather is becoming more extreme: more heavy showers, more heat waves. There is a greater risk of flooding: the rivers and sewers are no longer able to drain the water properly during heavy rainfall. Nature in the Netherlands is changing: species that originally come from warmer areas, feel more and more at home in the Netherlands. Well-known examples are the oak processionary caterpillar, the small hermit crab, certain tick species and the "hay fever plant" Ambrosia. Another effect is that spring starts earlier: plants bloom earlier, trees sprout earlier, insects appear earlier and birds breed earlier in the year. This can cause problems, for example for migratory birds that missed the insect peak upon arrival in the Netherlands and cannot find enough food. Species that cannot adapt quickly enough to changing circumstances run the risk of disappearing. There are also advantages: we can grow other vegetable and plant species because they will do better in the Netherlands. Winters are getting milder; it will freeze less often. It is getting wetter: in the spring, autumn and winter there is more rainfall. Summers are getting drier and hotter. There are more summer and tropical days. In the Netherlands, the consequences of climate change can probably be controlled. We can strengthen dikes and dunes and create storage areas along rivers for extra river water. You can also help to limit waterlogging by applying fewer tiles and more greenery in your garden. Rainwater can then sink into the soil, so that the sewer is less overloaded (so: less flooded basements and streets).
That special day.
you remember it.
22-12-2007, there was frozen fog on the trees and a blue sky. It was just a few hours. It was marvelous.
The consequences of our rainy spring months are still visible, but at least the light is getting better. We've had sunshine for three days in a row now, which is a first this year.

In October 2013, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the province of Bohol, Philippines, causing the land to sink by around 1 metre. Combined with a hundred years’ worth of sea level rise, the earthquake had catastrophic consequences for the islands of Batasan, Pangapasan, Ubay and Bilangbilangan, which have experienced partial or complete flooding ever since.

These last two years have been really hard for the consequences of the already pandemic drought that we are suffering in Spain.
Most of the reservoirs, whose dams were built mostly at the time of the dictator, General Franco, to alleviate in part the effects of the droughts, are running empty.
In some cases, the level of the waters of these reservoirs submerged entire towns, as happened with the town of Linares, a few kilometers from Maderuelo.
In the case of Maderuelo, the medieval bridge was submerged, as well as the hermitage of Vera Cruz (True Cross), that was partially submerged, whose beautiful frescoes had to be transferred to the Prado Museum in Madrid.
But in times of drought, the bridge re-emerges and we have verified that it is in a very good state of conservation.
In this photo you can see the medieval bridge next to the main bridge
And in the related photo, you can see the state of the water level in the reservoir, last August.

One year later (i.e. fall 2020), the Alex tempest made the Vésubie river that you can see, raging and devastating villages, houses and roads. Many victims and isolated people were accounted. We, scientists, have good reasons to think that such intense storms are direct consequences of the climate warming.

Despite the parachute structure of the individual Dandelion seeds being largely made up of empty space, it is believed their design creates a ring-shaped air bubble ("separated vortex ring") which slows their descent to the ground and allows them to spread further afield (and into my garden as an unfortunate consequence). It is thought their design is up to four times more efficient that a conventional parachute.
Taking responsibility does not mean accepting the consequences.
To bear responsibility means to be self-aware of one's own inner echo. Our own echo that is sent back into the world.

Markyate's High Street follows the bed of the River Ver, so is sloping, approximately from north to south. This is the northern and higher end of High Street. The building reflects this situation too in that one end is higher above the ground than the other. There are consequences if, as here, you put the entrance to your home at the higher end.

The seawater has receded due to low tide, which makes it impossible for several fishermen to get their boats closer to the wholesale fish market where they are going to unload their fish catch.
As a result, the fishermen and their assisting workers have to walk and wade in the shallow waters for more than 50 meters to carry the fish containers toward the market. And some have to do it a few times to complete the job.
