Necessity is blind until it becomes conscious. Freedom is the consciousness of necessity.

The desire of gold is not for gold. It is for the means of freedom and benefit.

May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please but as the opportunity to do what is right.
Peter Marshall
Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.

No one loses anyone, because no one owns anyone. That is the true experience of freedom: having the most important thing in the world without owning it.

Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

An earlier photo from two years ago taken on our previous stay at Praia Grande can be viewed in the first comment box below. If nothing else the pairing is a good lesson in how colour temperature shifts over the course of a day changes the look of an image.
I am destined to repeat myself it seems. There is a wonderful book by photographer David Lubbers that I highly recommend entitled “Persistence of Vision” in which the artist pairs photographs that he made years apart that show that he is seeing in the same way over time. I find this is true of my photographs as well ... on review ... images that are taken years apart appear to have a strong relationship in composition, light, texture, perspective, etc. even though it is not a conscious effort. I suppose this should not be surprising but it always makes me a little more thoughtful about my photography when I make the observation.

Each of us is in a different world, in our conscious minds, and we have to have respect for each other's world.
I think this was my best shot of 2020. The pandemic was in its early days. I felt like that jackrabbit. I was on high alert. In May I'd exited from my business of 25 years (no work) and moved into a new job for the summer. I was very... lucky. I was also very alert.
My family and I took walks in fields after dinner. There were a ton of rabbits. There were no planes. No cars. The city was weirdly quiet. I felt compelled to make keen observations and good judgments, just like the rabbits in Watership Down.
"The full moon covered the high solitude with its light. We are not conscious of daylight as that which displaces darkness. Moonlight...is inconstant. It transforms.”

Adrienne was conscious, but the world moved in slow motion—distorted, dreamlike. Her skull throbbed. Silence pressed against her ears. She blinked. Tried to rise. Failed. Where was she?
Reality slowly came into focus. Think! She scanned the chaos around her—twisted metal, scorched walls, debris. To her left… Kayla. Laying still. Breathing. She was bleeding. Relief surged, then vanished. Adrienne forced herself upright, staggering, dazed.
Then she saw him—Edlon. One of the Arcturians. Memory flickered: she and Kayla had been preparing to leave. Then the explosion.
She crawled to Kayla. Unmoving, but a pulse. “Kayla,” she whispered, then louder. No response. She patted her cheek. “Wake up.”
Adrienne reached for Edlon’s wrist. No pulse. But did Arcturians even have one there? She didn’t know. His skin was paler than usual—eerily so.
She cradled Kayla’s head. A gash. Panic clawed at her throat. She had to stop the bleeding. She tore a strip of cloth and wrapped it around Kayla’s head. Too loose. Not enough.
A crewman burst through the passage, skidded to a halt. His eyes widened. “Get to an escape pod! The ship is entering Earth’s atmosphere. It will burn up. No time!” He vanished down the corridor.
Adrienne’s heart pounded. She had to jump. Had to take Kayla.
Then—she remembered. The data slate. Coordinates to the reptilian sites. Edlon had given it to her. Where—? She scanned the wreckage, spotted it, snatched it up.
She turned back to Kayla—and froze.
Kayla was fading. Her outline shimmered, dissolving.
“NO!” Adrienne screamed.
In seconds, Kayla was gone.
Adrienne collapsed to her knees, staring at the empty space. Disbelief. Horror.
The ship groaned around her. Metal shrieked. Smoke thickened, choking. The floor trembled. A deafening crash as a bulkhead collapsed. Intense heat.
This wasn’t real. Couldn’t be real!
She scrambled through the wreckage, calling Kayla’s name. Searching. Hoping.
But Kayla was nowhere. Just… gone.

Just on the way back to the car park, another spot by Mrs R. The office block on the corner opposite the Lowry Theatre. Many offices left with the lights on showing the interiors... clearly the media world isn't energy conscious!
Apologies in advance to Kevin Walker for pinching one of his recent titles but it was too good not to use!
As winter begins to fade, I'm finding image potential once more in the roadside puddles and ditches. The melting snow produces standing water which then freezes overnight. Get out early with a tripod and macro lens, and a whole new world of possibilities unfolds.
Here, last year's fallen weeds lie suspended in and under thin ice, overlaid by a million frozen bubbles. An abstract tangle of shapes and textures; a transient moment in an ancient process of death, decay, and rebirth. A minor miracle. A wild moment of imaginative connection that, for me, transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary.
The pano crop was an afterthought. Last spring I started shooting "macro panoramas" - consciously - applying a format usually reserved for landscapes to other subjects. Why not? The standard 2:3 ratio is just fine as a default, but there's no reason we can't push the boundaries of conventionality when other options arise. A panorama seemed just right for this shot.
I added a 1.7x teleconverter to the 105mm macro lens for this, allowing me a little more working distance from my subject. It also meant I didn't have to lean over as far to frame the shot - my back isn't what it used to be, and the less strain I put on it, the better. These roadside ditches are less fascinating if you fall face first into one.

Rotari worked in Italy before leaving for the courts of Dresden and St. Petersburg. In Dresden he began to specialize in fanciful “character heads” of young women. This is an early and elaborate example: she seems unguarded, at ease, yet conscious of her observer. Rotari returned repeatedly to the same formula, exploring the variety possible in his limited subject matter: some figures are caught in mid-action; some pose coquettishly; most return our gaze, a few affect indifference. His male patrons appreciated the calculated mix of intimacy and artifice in such pictures.
My first time consciously at such a well known specific spot for photographers. Since I was passing anyway I took this, and noticed that the tree has lost even more of its branches. I had forgotten that Buttermere does not receive direct winter sunshine because of the steepness of the High Stile ridge to the S and SW.
Chris Shaw asked me to tell the story behind this image, so I will share some thoughts on it. I have shot this pathway so many times I have lost count as you might notice in my collection of Flickr pics. I have utilized the ICM technique, shot it in colour and in black and white with this particular scene. Very simply, I see the camera lens as an extension of my inner self and this shot is no exception. Strangely though, oftentimes I am unaware of what might be lurking around in my sub conscious until I download a few photos. I try to get out as much as possible but my torn up shoulders sometimes get in the way. My photography is 100% an escape for me and is no doubt the best therapy for any issues I may be dealing with on any given day. Let me conclude by saying that fellow Flickr person Geraint Evans has been an inspiration for me in so many ways.

I think being conscious about the things we are grateful for is a practice we should observe regularly, not just on Thanksgiving.
With that said, I have so many beautiful things in my life to be thankful for; an amazing husband, loving family, and the most wonderful supportive friends to name a few.
As for Second Life? I am incredibly grateful for all of the amazing and wonderful people I've met these last few months. I've made so many new friends and had such a wonderful time getting back into SL and back into texture work.
I hope that today, where ever you are in the world that you consider the things in your life that make it wonderful and full of joy and love. Oh, and I hope you get to eat all the delicious things!!!
Happy Thanksgiving! ♥

Sometimes life feels like jumping from one incident to another, without any time to be fully conscious about what truly happens. When reaching the end, we can only hope we didn't overlock or missed out fully enjoying all the brief deep beautiful moments of pure joy and happiness in our rush through life.

The old Ford pickup and the even older gasoline pump (with one of those glass globes and a printed warning that the globe must be full at the beginning and end of pumping) are stationed here between the apple picking fields and the farm store of this bustling business. Plenty of people take photos, as intended, and especially family selfies. So how could I resist?
It's interesting how there are visual similarities between this and the previous image, even though I didn't consciously plan it that way. I think it's fascinating how we consciously and unconsciously construct our photostreams, and what it says about us and our photography.
In this room of the Michener museum, I was looking for objects in the room to incorporate into a shot of the artwork. The best way to do that seemed to be shooting through things, as in this previous shot. I find that idea of looking-through intriguing in how it creates layering and a doubling of reality that forces us to think of the relationship between what is seen and what is seen through.
Happiness: there are a series of rules, and if you fail to follow them, your conscious mind will refuse to accept the idea that you're happy.

It is amazing that this doll exudes (despite its slight damages...or maybe because of that? ) more feeling than people who pay a lot of money to look artificial.
The Queen's House is one of the most important buildings in British architectural history, being the first consciously classical building to have been constructed in the country. The house was built for Queen Anne of Denmark, consort of King James I, between 1616 and 1635, and was a crucial early commission for the architect Inigo Jones. The Tulip Stairs are an original feature of the house, and were the first centrally unsupported helical stairs constructed in England. The stairs are supported by a cantilever from the walls with each tread resting on the one below.
