Es ist wieder Earth Hour. Jedes Jahr machen dabei viele Menschen weltweit am gleichen Tag um halb neun Ortszeit für eine Stunde das Licht aus. Es ist die größte Klima-Protest-Aktion der Welt. Die erste Earth Hour in Deutschland hat 2007 stattgefunden. Der WWF sagt, mittlerweile machen ordentlich Leute mit: 373 Städte in ganz Deutschland, viele Unternehmen und viele Geschäfte sollen letztes Jahr dabei gewesen sein. Weltweit machen Millionen Menschen und ganze Städte das Licht aus. Wir von PlanetB haben uns gefragt: Ist das nur ne nette Aktion mit nem Winz-Effekt oder spart man damit auch richtig viel Strom? Und was bringt die Earth Hour sonst für den Klimaschutz? Die Antwort und was das alles mit Australien zu tun hat – das seht ihr in diesem Video!
WAS BRINGT DIE EARTH HOUR 2021 IN CO2-SPAR-ZAHLEN?
Die erste Earth Hour in Deutschland hat 2007 stattgefunden und war gerade mal 5 Minuten lang. Dafür gab’s mächtig Kritik. Der Vorwurf: Das bringt überhaupt nix für den Klimaschutz. Wir haben mal genauer hingeguckt: Wenn die Hälfte aller Haushalte in Deutschland für 5 Minuten das Licht ausschaltet, dann spart das 343 Tonnen CO2. Das ist ungefähr so viel wie das, was 33 Leute im Jahr in die Luft pusten - Wenn denn wirklich die Hälfte aller deutschen Haushalte mitmacht. Für die letzten Jahre gibt es keine Daten, also haben wir das mal grob überschlagen. Wenn jede zweite Person auf der Welt drei Lampen ausknipst, , dann sparen wir alle zusammen immer noch nicht besonders viel. In Sachen Strom sparen ist die Aktion eine sehr kleine Nummer.
WAS BRINGT DIESE AKTION DANN?
Menschen aus ganz vielen verschiedenen Ländern auf der Welt machen mit. Und das Thema Klimaschutz bekommt Aufmerksamkeit. Das ist ja an sich schon mal ne gute Sache. Und das ist auch mal ein Ding, bei dem Corona einem nicht in die Parade fährt: Kann man entspannt von zu Hause aus machen und die Kontaktbeschränkungen versauen’s nicht. Die Aktion hat auch ne coole Geschichte. Die allererste Earth Hour gab es am 31. März 2007 in Sydney. Das war so: Die australische Regierung hatte sich geweigert, das Kyoto-Protokoll zu unterzeichnen. Umweltaktivist*innen vom WWF Australien wollten das so nicht hinnehmen – und haben die Aktion gestartet: Für eine Stunde Licht aus in Sydney. 2020 waren dann schon 190 Länder dabei, sagen die Organisatoren. Rekord! Und das ist auch das Ziel der ganzen Aktion: Es ist PR für den Klimaschutz. Und manchmal stößt so eine Botschaft dann auch konkrete Dinge an, z.B auf den Galapagos Inseln: Da wurden nach der Aktion im Jahr 2014 Plastiktüten und Einwegverpackungen verboten.

Paris, 30th March 2019. During one hour, between 8:30 and 9:30 local time, the lights of the Eiffel Tower and of many iconic buildings in Paris were turned off. This was to raise awareness of the urgent need to protect our planet and the environment.

A 20h30 le 30 mars, les lumières de la Tour Eiffel et de bien d'autres monuments emblématiques parisiens se sont éteintes pour une heure. Un événement destiné à sensibiliser à la nécessité et à l'urgence de protéger notre planète et notre environnement. Chacun à sa façon peut y contribuer.

Die von der Umweltstiftung WWF initiierte "Earth Hour" (Stunde der Erde) ist der Grund, warum in vielen Städten der Welt Gebäude heute dunkel bleiben.
Ab 20.30 Uhr werden für eine Stunde ihre hell beleuchteten Wahrzeichen verdunkelt.
In Deutschland sind laut WWF über 300 Städte beteiligt. So werden das Brandenburger Tor in Berlin, die Speicherstadt in Hamburg, der Kölner Dom und die Frauenkirche in München vorübergehend im Dunkeln verschwinden.
International nehmen Bauwerke wie das New Yorker Empire State Building oder das Taj Mahal in Indien teil.
"Earth Hour": Licht aus für den globalen Klimaschutz
Heute wird es für eine Stunde dunkel – zumindest an einigen Gebäuden. Für die "Earth Hour" wird als Zeichen für den Klimaschutz das Licht ausgeschaltet.

In Offenbach macht in diesem Jahr zum ersten Mal der Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) mit und schaltet seine komplette Außenbeleuchtung mit einer Leistung von knapp 8000 Watt ab.
Mit dieser eingesparten Energie könnte man zum Beispiel acht Stunden Staubsaugen oder 16 Tage einen 300-Liter-Kühlschrank betreiben, hieß es bei der Stadt. Im Landkreis Gießen wird am Samstagabend die üblicherweise angestrahlte Burg Gleiberg eine Stunde lang im Dunkeln liegen.
It was a while ago I blogged something about Doing Something Solar... I've not done a *whole* lot since then, but am planning on some research over the (sunny) summer on what it might take to rig some solar panels into my home grid.
The folks at Connect2Earth were nice enough for doing something nice for me- for mentioning of their project, they sent me this cool gift. It is a Solio Hybrid Charger which has panels that can use the sun to fill its battery and in turn, re-charge any device powered by USB type connectors, including the iPhone.
I've charged the battery up since I got home and will be testing the power of the phone charge (I don't know if it is me, but my phone seems to charge more fully off of the A/C than my laptop).
I can see some future use as a backpack tool just so I can fully geek out (or call for help) out in the woods. But even at home, if I keep this charged by the sun, and use it to power the phone and my mp3 player, well, it might just be a tiny tiny less amount of electric sucked from the coal burning on the grid.
At least it seems to work better than my little hand crank/solar charger I keep in the car.

Please replace your old incandescent bulbs with energy-saver, more efficient CFL bulbs (as shown in the photo).
MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos from 1,041 cities and towns will join the world in spending Earth Hour and environmental group World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines listed 10 ways to do as Filipinos turn off the lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
“The switchoff signifies the start of a very personal and lasting lifestyle change to minimize our ecological impacts and to do our bit for a more sustainable planet. Personal pledges can take many forms, from upgrading to energy-efficient appliances to planting and stewarding a small grove of native trees,” said Naderev Saño, head of climate change and energy program of WWF-Philippines and national director of Earth Hour Philippines.

Earth Hour is a massive social movement aimed to mobilize action against climate change through the simple act of turning off lights.
Launched in Australia on 31 March 2007, Earth Hour moved over two million people and 2100 businesses in Sydney to turn off their lights for 60 minutes – hence the movement’s logo. This captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world, giving rise to Earth Hour 2008 – where 50 million people in 370 cities followed suit. New York’s Times Square, Rome’s Coliseum and even the remote Casey Station in Antarctica plunged into darkness.
The Philippines was the first Southeast Asian nation to pledge support. Its flagship cities of Pasay, Manila, Parañaque and Makati observed a switch-off ceremony and enveloped the entire Roxas Boulevard seaside strip in symbolic darkness. Popular landmarks such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Mall of Asia were blanketed in darkness. Lights-out activities were instigated by a million Filipinos in over 50 major towns and cities across the nation.
