21 May 2022: Conference and Award Ceremony

Munich, Literaturhaus and Live-stream

Give voice to type …

Letters surround us, and permeate our identities. The richness of typographic forms reflects the diversity of our histories: type brings us together, and gives depth and nuance to what distinguishes us. Type bridges past and future, geographical spaces and cultural domains, like no other element of our culture.

On Saturday, our venue Literaturhaus will become a lab for future forms of international and intercultural communication & collaboration. A place where we examine script and typography as an essential basis for international exchange as well as a force for identification. Only those who are visible and recognizable can enter into an open dialogue. Thematic sessions touch on topics such as multiscript design, endangered scripts/alphabets, and type as a cultural asset and identification anchor.

"The Possible Mediums conference is composed of a series of workshops and panel discussions revolving around four “possible mediums.” Challenging the boundaries of architectural convention, the invited workshop leaders employ exploratory processes rooted in mediums external to the discipline (such as film or comics) or developed from atypical applications of more conventional mediums (such as drawings or models). The technical sophistication and inventive applications of their work reflect two major developments within speculative architecture of the past decade: a broad diffusion of technological expertise and a shift from critical to projective theory. Preserving commitment to expertise and imagination, Possible Mediums places this group of designers in productive dialog, unpacking their collective foundations and futures."

Willmar Conference, March 26, 2022 in Willmar, MN. Photo by Jasmin Kemp

This picture was taken in our front yard late on a Sunday afternoon, at the conclusion of a weekend which for millions of Latter-day Saints around the world, including myself and my family, centered around the Church's annual General Conference. The event takes place twice each year, during the first weekend in April, and again during the first weekend in October.

This image was captured about two hours after the concluding session had ended. Moments after it was taken, I had an unfortunate accident when I tried to stand on a flowerbed retaining wall to take a picture of yet another flower, and the wall gave way under me. My Nikon D50 fell and hit a sprinkler head, and for a few moments would not work. I checked the owner's manual, and discovered that the aperture ring on the lens had been slightly dislodged. I removed the lens and reattached it with no problems at all. Other than a scrape on the bottom of the camera body, it appears to have suffered no damage, and I was able to take some sunset photos with it an hour or so later. But just to be on the safe side, I am taking it to Ritz Photo sometime this week for a good look-over. The incident scared the daylights out of me for a few minutes.
