The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a South American New World vulture and is the only member of the genus Vultur. It is found in the Andes mountains and adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America. With a maximum wingspan of 3.3 m (10 ft 10 in) and weight of 15 kg (33 lb), the Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world, and is generally considered to be the largest bird of prey in the world. It is a national symbol of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru and plays an important role in the folklore and mythology of the Andean regions. It may live to 50 years or more, and correspondingly has low reproductive rates. Andean Condors mate for life.
The Andean condor is considered vulnerable by the IUCN and the Peruvian Conservation Organization. As a result of research on its plight, its status was changed to Vulnerable from Near Threatened in 2020, and only about 10,000 individuals remain. Hacienda Zuleta is home to one of the reintroduction Condor preserves where offspring of captured birds are reintroduced to the wild. Zuleta is home to one breeding pair, and wild condors will often pop by.

An awesome day where I took a complete break from life (even thinking about photography) and spent the entire afternoon just laying on my back, looking up, watching the massive Condors (10-foot wingspans!) encircling the grandiose scene. Later, I was treated to a surreal, half-hour long sunset.

Forever #1 on my bird sighting bucket list! Anytime a CC presents itself to me when I happen to look up at the exact moment it soars overhead is a gift. Overcast sky, rainy, flying WAY up there above the cliffs of Big Sur...it's always breathtaking to see this magnificent bird. Image is highly cropped with lots of slider action in LR...but I don't care. Any time I can share a photo of an almost nearly extinct California Condor in the wild is a GOOD day! :)

California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) juvenile. This bird, about six months old, showed up and was captured at a feeding station at Pinnacles National Park. The staff of the condor recovery program did not recognize this one. It had been hatched at a nest site somewhere outside the park that was unknown to monitors. The young condor was assigned a temporary blue patagial wing tag with the number 1 until it could be fully identified. Based on DNA analysis, the staff was able to identify both parents of the bird. If the condor is recaptured, they will remove the temporary tag and replace it with a permanent ID. When this photo was taken, the confused juvenile was hanging out and feeding with a flock of 18 turkey vultures. Pinnacles National Park. San Benito Co., Calif.
