The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a South American New World vulture and is the only member of the genus Vultur. It is found in the Andes mountains and adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America. With a maximum wingspan of 3.3 m (10 ft 10 in) and weight of 15 kg (33 lb), the Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world, and is generally considered to be the largest bird of prey in the world. It is a national symbol of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru and plays an important role in the folklore and mythology of the Andean regions. It may live to 50 years or more, and correspondingly has low reproductive rates. Andean Condors mate for life.
The Andean condor is considered vulnerable by the IUCN and the Peruvian Conservation Organization. As a result of research on its plight, its status was changed to Vulnerable from Near Threatened in 2020, and only about 10,000 individuals remain. Hacienda Zuleta is home to one of the reintroduction Condor preserves where offspring of captured birds are reintroduced to the wild. Zuleta is home to one breeding pair, and wild condors will often pop by.

An adult female condor (left) visits with a juvenile male, possibly her chick, on a rocky perch high over a valley that separates Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia in the southern Andes region of South America. One of the coolest moments photographing these birds from an overlook on a private estancia was witnessing the obvious signs of affection between this pair. Until then I had thought of condors as merely ugly carrion-eating vultures.
California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is one of the rarest birds on the planet and is classified as critically endangered, the highest category given to wild creatures by IUCN. Its numbers plummeted during the 20th century due to pesticides (DDT), lead poisoning, poaching and habitat destruction. By 1987 there were just 27 individuals left on the planet. The US Government stepped in and sanctioned the capture of all wild birds, which were then captive bred in two California zoos. In 1991 they started to release birds back into the wild and by the end of 2022 there were 336 birds in the wild, plus another 200 in captive breeding programmes. We visited an area where birds had been sighted near the coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles vaguely hoping for distant views over the hills, but we were rewarded when this adult flew right over us at close range. It has rather odd feet with a short hind toe and a long middle toe. Its claws are also rather feeble and blunt (compared with this Golden Eagle www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/51398463640/in/photolist ) though large, sharp claws are not really needed for a carrion-feeder. Its scientific name translates as naked vulture of California, referring to its featherless head. They are also absolutely massive with an 8 to 10 foot wingspan and weighing up to 20lb.

An awesome day where I took a complete break from life (even thinking about photography) and spent the entire afternoon just laying on my back, looking up, watching the massive Condors (10-foot wingspans!) encircling the grandiose scene. Later, I was treated to a surreal, half-hour long sunset.
