Concluding my visits to Royal Ascot 2025, the final day is often a more relaxed affair but still brings in plenty of visitors. Around 170 coaches and buses arrived on Saturday 21st June with many different vehicles from those seen earlier in the week. The weather forecast thankfully was slightly off and, although it was muggy, it didn't turn into the energy-sapping sunfest.

 

They say "Tomorrow never comes" but one of them turned up today along with a pair of Routemasters, a funky Unvi Cimo, a bright yellow Hams coach and a rare Ilesbus Calista among others.

24 species of warbler were photodocumented during Spring migration in 2018 by yours truly. This was an exceptional year for birders as well as Flickrati who were afforded both the benefit of uncommon species and uncommonly close views. This concludes our "May is for Magee" series of warbler posts.

Evidences of Salvation

Many real believers are often distressed and troubled, on account of . . .

the weakness of their faith,

the strength of their fears, and

their mistakes in reference to their interest in Christ.

 

They look for too much in self, and for too little in Christ.

 

To avoid soul deception — they are apt to run into gloom and despondency. They look for certain evidences in themselves, and because they do not find those they look for — they conclude they have none; and giving way to the temptations of Satan, they . . .

distress their own souls,

dishonor the Lord Jesus, and

reflect badly on the grace of God.

 

They doubt not the ability of Christ — but they question his willingness to save. If the testimony of scripture assures me he is able to save — it is to encourage me to approach him and cast my soul upon him — and if he assures me he will never cast out — it is to disperse my fears, remove my doubts, and draw me to his mercy-seat with confidence and courage. There is no saving religion in doubting — though many who are truly godly do doubt. Slavish fear never honors a God of love — yet many who desire to honor him give way to groundless fears.

  

1. One evidence of true salvation is CONVICTION OF SIN. Conviction of sin in the conduct — and of sin in the heart. We are all sinners — but only a few know what sin is, and what a fearful thing it is to be a sinner. Sin is . . .

the breach of the divine law,

an insult offered to every one of the divine attributes,

and that horrible thing which God hates.

 

Sin . . .

is rooted in our nature,

grows with our growth,

strengthens with our strength,

flows from our hearts as naturally as water from a fountain, or light from the body of the sun.

 

Every action we have performed,

every word we have spoken,

every thought we have conceived—

has been defiled by sin, and deserves eternal death!

 

The nature of sin is most dreadful, and the effects of sin are most fearful. But man untaught of God has no such views of sin, or of himself as polluted by it; but when the Holy Spirit quickens and enlightens the immortal mind, when he brings home the law as the standard of holiness and the rule of conduct — then the sinner discovers his state, and fears the consequences. He is alarmed, distressed, and inquires, "Who, what can save me?" He fears his sins are too numerous and aggravated to be pardoned, being ignorant of the extent of the grace of God, and the infinite merit of the blood of Christ. He fears presumption — and he dreads despair. He cannot laugh at sin or longer trifle with eternity; he can no more dare the justice or slight the mercy of God. He is concerned for his safety, being conscious of his danger. He longs for a pardon, being convinced of his guilt. He trembles at the thought of justice — but hopes when he hears of mercy. Sensible of his lost condition, he presents the heartfelt prayer, "God be merciful to me a sinner!"

 

But we are not to judge our conviction of sin by its depths — but by its nature. If it drives us to despair, then it is natural. But if it drives us to Jesus, then it is spiritual. If your conviction . . .

leads you to see your need of a Savior,

prevents your resting on anything but Christ Jesus,

leads you frankly to confess your crimes before God,

and to seek for salvation solely by the grace of God—

then they are spiritual convictions, and the evidence of spiritual life. None could produce them, but the Holy Spirit; and none ever experience them, but those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life!

 

2. In close connection with conviction of sin, is hatred to sin, loathing ourselves on account of sin. If we see sin in the light of the Lord — then we must hate it. If we see ourselves as polluted and defiled by sin — then we must loathe ourselves on account of it. Finding sin to be rooted in our nature, and seeing it occasionally break out notwithstanding our striving and watching against it — will stop our mouths from boasting, and prevent our excusing ourselves. We shall see sin as our fault — as well as our disease; as our crime — as much as our misery. And feeling inclined at times to favor it, and secretly wishing we were at liberty to indulge in it — will make us abhor ourselves and repent in dust and ashes! The former is from the corruption of nature — and the latter from the principle of divine grace.

 

The Christian hates sin in all — but mostly in himself; and while he wishes the world to be freed from it — he would give a world if he could but get rid of it! It is sin in himself, which grieves him:

sin in his prayers,

sin in his praises,

sin in his purposes,

sin in his duties,

sin in all he does!

 

And seeing no hope of complete sanctification on this side the grave, he cries, "I loathe it, I loathe it, I would not live always!" As sin is forbidden, he dares not indulge it. As the object of his hatred, he naturally forsakes it. He cannot but lament that sin is in his nature, and grieve before God when it appears in his conduct. If sin is the object of your hatred, if self is loathed because it is sinful — then it is evident you are born of God; for except a man be born from above — he cannot loathe self, hate sin, and forsake it. In order to do this, he must have a new nature, and that nature must be holy and divine.

  

3. An appetite for divine things is a scriptural evidence of grace. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness — for they shall be filled." If we can find satisfaction, pleasure, and delight only in the things of the world — then we are dead in sin; dead while we live. But if instead thereof, we are thirsting for God, to . . .

enjoy his presence,

feel his love,

receive his blessing, and

walk in the light of his countenance —

if we are hungering for Jesus as the bread of life,

and if nothing but Jesus himself can satisfy us —

then we are certainly blessed.

 

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness — for they shall be filled." This promise is plain, positive, and certain; and every hungry soul may derive comfort therefrom. When Jesus is the chief object of our desire, and the blessings he communicates are the principle things in our estimation — then there is divine life in the soul. For dead men have no desire or appetite for natural things; so people spiritually dead have no appetite for spiritual things. If nothing but Christ can satisfy us — then we "have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God!" 1 Peter 1:23

  

4. An entire willingness to be saved in God's way; that is, by free grace through the blood of Jesus — is an evidence of divine life in the soul. No man in a state of nature is willing to be saved as a poor debtor by a Surety; as a miserable sinner by a gracious Savior. Man would rather perish in sin, than be saved in this way! Hence our Redeemer testified, "You will not come unto me that you might have life." "The carnal mind is enmity against God, it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."

 

Self, works, and merit — must be entirely renounced! We must heartily surrender ourselves into the hands of Jesus to be . . .

washed in his blood,

clothed in his righteousness,

and sanctified by his Spirit —

or we reject God's method of salvation.

 

But if we are willing to do this, there can be no doubt but God has been working in us, to will and to do of his good pleasure. The promise in our experience is then fulfilled, "Your people shall be willing in the day of your power." Fallen human nature will not approve of God's plan, which makes man nothing — and Christ all in all. Nor will the carnal mind accept salvation on any such terms. Consequently if we are willing, heartily willing to be saved from wrath through him, and prove that willingness by our conduct — we doubtless have the Holy Spirit in us.

  

5. If in addition to this, we are made honest and SINCERE; and being sensible of the ignorance of our minds and deceitfulness of our hearts — we come to the light of God's word, and to his glorious throne, praying, "Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my thoughts; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way!" The sincere Christian dreads deception, and desires to make his "calling and election sure;" he shuns presumption, and would avoid the possibility of mistake. He therefore, bares his conscience to the word of God, and would not play the hypocrite upon any consideration.

 

Honesty and sincerity of heart in reference to our eternal concerns, is a most important blessing; none possess it but those who are "called, and chosen, and faithful;" and if we are made honest in this sense, it is the grace of God which brings salvation that has made us so, and it is clear we are called with a holy calling.

  

6. FAITH in Jesus is an evidence of salvation; not believing that he is my Savior, that he "loved me and gave himself for me;" for this is rather the effect of faith than faith itself. Faith is the eye of the soul which discovers the blessing which Jesus has to bestow; and the hand which is stretched out to receive it. Believing in Jesus is . . .

venturing my soul upon his work,

trusting my whole self in his hands,

committing myself to him to be saved in his way, to his glory, as he is revealed in the everlasting gospel.

 

I feel that I am a sinner, and subscribe to all that God says in his holy word, respecting man as a sinner. I hear of Jesus as both able and willing to save, and I go to him in the exercises of my soul and cry, "Lord, save me!" I gather his answer from his word, and am enabled to lay hold on it by the Holy Spirit.

 

It requires no depth of wisdom, or mighty effort of mind to believe in Jesus. We simply . . .

credit his word,

confide in his faithfulness,

trust his atonement, and

look for the mercy of God unto eternal life.

 

Believing in him — we confess him as the Savior God has appointed, the Savior on whom we rely; and if we "confess with the mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in the heart that God has raised him from the dead — we shall be saved."

 

Reader, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ — and you shall be saved, for "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life — but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." John 3:36

 

Are you afraid? Do doubts arise in your mind? The difficulty in your mind arises from misapprehension. You needed a Savior, the gospel informs you of Jesus, who is just suited to your need, and assures you that he will receive and save you. And what is faith? Just receiving this statement and acting upon it. It is . . .

going to Jesus as directed,

receiving Christ as he is presented,

looking to him as invited, and

trusting in him as you are exhorted to do.

 

Every looking Israelite was healed, and every looking sinner shall be saved — the very looking to Jesus is faith, and proves your saving interest in the promise, "whoever believes shall receive remission of sins."

  

7. Love is an evidence of salvation.

 

Love to JESUS is an evidence of interest in the covenant of mercy — love flows from faith. If I believe what the Scriptures say of Jesus, as to the glory of his person, the tenderness of his heart, and the fullness of his grace — then I shall go to him to prove the truth of these important statements, and proving the truth of these precious declarations — how can I do otherwise than love him. If I question his loveliness or his love to me — then I cannot love him; and this is the cause why many of the Lord's little ones droop, and doubt, and fear. They question the truth of his word, and consequently the love of Jesus to them; this contracts and hardens the heart, and if they would give a world to feel love to Jesus. They cannot feel it, until brought cordially to admit the truth of what the scriptures testify in reference to the love and loveliness of Jesus — and then their frozen hearts will melt, and they will love him, because he first loved them.

 

But we must not always judge of love by warmth of feeling. There has been much warmth, where there has been but little sincere love. We must judge by the habitual state of our heart toward him.

 

Do you desire above all things to love him, and to be conformed to his will? Are you willing to part with all things for him, and unreservedly trust yourself with him? This is love; when I can trust my eternal interests in his hands, and endeavor constantly to keep his commandments.

 

Love to HIS PEOPLE because they are his, and are like him — is an infallible evidence of the new birth. "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren." If I love the picture — it is because I know and love the original. I could not love saint as a saint — if I did not know and love Jesus as the Savior of his people. If saints were more like Christ, then we would love them more. But as it is, though they are surrounded with infirmities, we love them; and are consequently entitled to be numbered with them, and to participate in all their joys and sorrows.

 

If we love Jesus supremely, and saints affectionately — then it is clear that we are created anew in Christ Jesus unto good works.

  

8. Humility proves we are the blessed of the Lord. If we are humbled under a sense of our sin, ignorance, and desert — we shall . . .

flee for refuge to the Lord Jesus,

receive with meekness the engrafted word;

and ascribe all our salvation to grace!

 

Nothing but the power of the Spirit of God can effectually . . .

humble the proud heart of man,

shut his mouth before God,

cause him with self-abhorrence to cry, "Guilty, guilty!"

and bring him to receive the kingdom of God as a little child.

 

Man will be something — but grace makes him nothing. It is the greatest mortification to proud nature, to be indebted to another for salvation, or to go to Heaven as a poor pauper, entirely dependant on the work of Jesus.

 

To renounce our own judgment,

to submit to be taught of God,

to believe the Word because God speaks it, and

to cleave to Jesus with full purpose of heart —

is genuine humility. The man has nothing to say against the demands or sentence of the holy law; and nothing to object to the provision or requirements of the glorious gospel. But he casts himself entirely on the . . .

unmerited mercy,

rich grace, and

promised compassion of Jehovah.

 

To this man, will Jehovah look with pleasure and approbation, and with him will he take up his abode. He walks humbly with his God. "Though the Lord is high — yet has he respect unto the lowly." "Blessed are the poor in in spirit — for theirs is the kingdom or Heaven."

 

9. He who is truly humbled under a sense of sin — pants, prays, and seeks for HOLINESS. He is as much concerned to be sanctified, as saved. He sees . . .

a beauty in holiness — and longs to possess it,

deformity in sin — and seeks to be delivered from it.

 

He mourns over the sins of others — but more over his own sin. Sin and Hell are always associated in his mind. He views . . .

sin as the root — and Hell as the tree;

sin as the fountain — and Hell as the stream naturally flowing from it.

 

Every man creates his own Hell — but no man can create his own Heaven. The true Christian must long to be holy — the precepts require it, and the principle of life within him pants for it with inextinguishable ardor. If he could but be holy, he would be happy, therefore he cries, "I shall be satisfied when I awake up in your likeness!" He avoids sin — and desires to be arrayed in all the graces of the Spirit, in all the beauties of holiness. He would be the personification of faith, love, humility and godly zeal. This desire for holiness is a certain evidence of godliness; for "without holiness no man shall see the Lord."

  

10. Godly FEAR is a covenant blessing, and a proof that we are of God. If we fear God with a filial fear, we fear to offend him and desire above all things to please him. It is not what will men say — but shall I hereby please God? We are taught in his word how to walk and to please him, and godly fear always prompts us to aim at this end. We shall fear to dishonor him in the world, the church, and our families. God is jealous of his glory — and so is a godly man. He desires to glorify him in the body, soul, and spirit, which are God's. He does not run at random — but prays, "What will You have me to do?" He does not make excuse for infirmities — but sighs out, "O that my ways were directed to keep your statutes always!" His motto is, "No peace with sin — no truce with Satan — no friendship with the world!" because these would lead him to dishonor God. He would rather suffer pain, than . . .

grieve the Holy Spirit,

dishonor his heavenly Father,

or wound the Savior.

 

And when he sees others careless, loose, and licentious; indulging their lusts and giving way to temptations, he says, "I do not do so, because of the fear of the Lord." He startles at sin with, "How shall I do this great wickedness, and sin against God!"

  

11. Attachment to the WORD OF GOD is a proof that we are of God. Real believers always prize the bible — they love to read it, to think over its contents, and to enjoy its communications. It is as necessary for their souls — as food is for their bodies; they often esteem it more than their necessary food. They would sooner part with all their dainties, than with their bibles. They read it as truth, they believe it as containing the mind of God; and when tempted to think differently, they are grieved and distressed. If the word of God is neglected, they condemn themselves, mourn over their folly before God, and crave his forgiveness. They stay themselves upon the word of God — when assaulted by Satan. They look to it for direction — when bewildered in their path. It is to them as Goliath's sword was to David, for they all say, "There is none like it."

 

They love the Word because it . . .

sets forth Jesus,

reveals the mind of God,

marks out the path of duty,

affords rich consolations,

and contains a mine of wealth.

 

They live . . .

believing its doctrines,

trusting its promises,

walking by its precepts, and

deriving encouragement and caution from its histories.

 

"O how I love your law, it is my meditation all the day. Except your law bad been my delight, my soul had almost dwelt in silence."

   

12. DISSATISFACTION with everything worldly on account of the imperfections discovered, is another evidence of real spirituality. Nothing under Heaven can satisfy the Christian. Having gone the round, he turns away with disgust and exclaims, "Whom have I in Heaven but you, and there is none upon earth that I desire beside you!" He can find full satisfaction only . . .

in the presence of God,

in the enjoyment of his Savior,

and in the duties of Christianity.

 

Everything besides appears empty, polluted, and vain. He may be occasionally attracted, and for a season led away from his resting place; but feeling dissatisfied, uneasy, and grieved, he says, "Return unto your rest, O my soul. There's nothing here deserves my joys — there's nothing like my God!"

 

If nothing can satisfy us but God, he will never put us off with less than himself. The wisdom, justice, the grace discovered in such a state of soul, is from himself; and he will never forsake the work of his own hands. We may learn from, and profit by, his works — but we can only rest in, and be satisfied with

 

himself. "The Lord is our inheritance. He is our portion forever!"

  

13. A spirit of PRAYER is from the Lord, and is a proof of our saving interest in his love. "Behold he prays!" If desire for prayer is produced, and the throne of grace is frequented — we are the blessed of the Lord. Prayer is the Christian's breath — he prays as naturally and as habitually as he breathes. And we would as soon think of a man living without respiration — as of a Christian living without prayer.

 

But do not mistake, prayer is not a form of words — but a sense of need, and a petition for supply. The believer often prays without speaking — while many speak in a form without praying. He goes to Jehovah as naturally as a child to his Father, and as frequently as he feels his wants. He lives in constant fellowship with Heaven. Sometimes he can only sigh or groan — and at other times he can plead with liberty and power. Sometimes he can only look towards the throne of grace — and at others he can wrestle with God and prevail.

 

His heart inspires his petitions,

the Word of God regulates his desires,

to Jesus he looks as his Intercessor before the throne, and

he continues in prayer notwithstanding discouragements.

 

He often feels . . .

his heart hard,

his thoughts perplexed,

his mind bewildered, and

his spirit lukewarm.

 

He is tempted to believe that it is no use for such a one, in such a frame to attempt to pray; but he must confess his faults, tell out his fears, and entreat for mercy in a Savior's name. And though often persuaded that he does not pray, that his attempts cannot be accepted, and that he has neither the gift nor the spirit of prayer — yet he still attempts to find access, and to breathe his sorrows there.

 

Mere formalists are generally satisfied with their prayers, and too often rest in them. But the real Christian sees his to be so impure, imperfect, and worthless — that he dares not trust in anything but Jesus, his righteousness, and blood.

 

Can you live without prayer? Can your discouragements make you give over attempting? Are you satisfied with your prayers? Or do you see that they, even the best of them, need to be washed in the precious blood of Jesus? If so, you have light, life, and spirituality; and surely you are one of those whom Jesus loves. Private prayer, from a sense of need, continued under all discouragements, is an evidence that we are the children of God.

  

14. The CONFLICT between the flesh and the Spirit, is an evidence of grace. If we have a daily exposition of the seventh chapter of the Romans within us — then we are as Paul was. This most Christians have in a greater or less degree: they would do good — but evil is present with them. They would serve the law of God — but are led captive by the law of sin. They hate what they often do — and love what they cannot attain to. They would be holy — but they sin; yet they never excuse sin in themselves, or endeavor to quote scripture to cloak it.

 

The flesh and the spirit carry on a constant warfare, so that the believer often feels wretched and longs for deliverance. He cannot do the things that he would. Sin will fight when it cannot reign. The warfare will only cease with death.

 

We daily discover how the flesh misleads us, and we find it spoils all we attempt for God's glory. It creeps into our motives, or turns us aside from our rule, or puffs us up at the end. Thus we feel . . .

the daily need the open fountain,

the renewings of the Holy Spirit, and

a fresh pardon from the hands of Jesus.

 

The flesh would make us truly miserable — but the riches, plenitude, and permanence of grace prevents it. The love of Jesus is the same — he witnesses the conflict, sympathizes with the sufferer, and cheers him with the assurance, "My grace is sufficient for you!"

 

The spirit desires only to be devoted to, ruled by, and employed for the Lord; and longs for the happy deliverance promised in God's word. Therefore, the flesh and spirit will strive against each other until the day of death!

  

15. Separation from the WORLD, from a discovery of its vanity and enmity to God — is an evidence of grace. The world will love its own — but saints are not of the world, even as Jesus was not of the world. They see that it is opposed to God in its spirit, maxims, and works; and that all the cry is "No God for me!" They cannot join with the ungodly world — they become strangers and pilgrims, and desire to leave it. They . . .

pity its state,

condemn its spirit,

protest against its practices,

and yet seek its good.

 

They witness for God in it, and to it. They sigh and cry because of its abominations, and long for the period when the earth shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption, and there shall be no more curse!

 

A worldly spirit indulged and enjoyed, is the evidence of a worldly man. But deadness to the world, sympathy with Jesus who was persecuted and crucified in the world, and living above the world in fellowship and communion with God — is the evidence of a spiritual man. The world knows not, loves not the Christian; and the Christian loves not the world, knowing that if any man is in friendship with the world, that he is an enemy of God — "if any man loves the world — the love of the Father is not in him." The whole world lies in the wicked one, how important then to be delivered from the present evil world; and to have our affections set on things above, where Christ sits at the right hand of God.

 

"Those who are in the flesh, mind and enjoy the things of the flesh; but those who are in the Spirit, mind the things of the spirit."

  

16. The Lord's people are CHASTENED FOR SIN, and cannot go on in transgression without correction. An enlightened conscience armed with God's word will smite them, the ministry of the word will pierce and penetrate their hearts, and they prove it to be an evil and bitter thing to wander from the Lord their God. Providence joins with Scripture in reproving them for their folly, and the Lord follows them with the rod until they fall at his feet, acknowledge their transgression, and crave his forgiveness.

 

Mere professors may be allowed to go on and escape the rod when they sin — but "those whom the Lord loves — he chastens; and scourges EVERY one whom he receives." And the Christian will justify his God in using discipline, though it may be sharp — and will bow and listen to the rod, though it speaks against him.

 

To lay low at the Lord's feet while he smites,

to cleave to him when he frowns,

to plead with him when he speaks against us —

proves that our principles are divine, that we have the Spirit of God, and are heirs of glory!

 

O for much of that meek humility which . . .

closes the mouth from speaking against any of God's ways,

opens the ear to listen to all his communications,

lays the heart at his feet, and

covers the face with holy shame before him, on account of conscious unworthiness!

 

The lofty mountain of a proud heart will be dry, withered, and barren; but the low valley of an humble soul will be watered with the dew of Heaven from above, and bear fruit to Jehovah's praise.

 

"By humility and the fear of the Lord, are riches, and honor, and life."

 

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God."

 

"Despise not the chastening of the Almighty."

  

17. Looking, waiting, and longing for the SECOND COMING of Jesus, is a scriptural evidence of saintship. Jesus has promised to come again and receive us to himself, he has commanded us to be ready for his glorious appearing, and he has assured us that "to those who look for him, he will come the second time without sin, unto salvation."

 

Love must desire the presence of the beloved object, and must desire his glorification; and he is coming "to be glorified in his saints, and admired in all those who believe." He is now in the Heavens, waiting until his enemies to be made his footstool. The Heavens must retain him, "until the times of the restitution of all things which God has spoken by the mouth of his holy prophets." Faith believes the statements;

hope expects their accomplishment; and

love looks and longs for the time; crying "Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly!"

 

He will certainly come, to the joy of all such — but all his enemies shall be ashamed. There are some things connected with the coming of Jesus, which may make our flesh tremble — but . . .

to see him as he is;

to be like him; to be with him;

to swell his train and his triumphs;

to witness his glories; and

to participate in his blessedness —

is certainly an object of desire to every believer. We wait for him at the Son of God from Heaven, who has preserved us from the wrath to come!

  

18. But after all is said, there is no evidence like HABITUAL FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD. To walk with God as our Father, communicating to him all that we fear, feel, and desire; and receiving from him vigor, comfort, and daily preservation — is an evidence which can never be questioned. We walk by faith, that is,

believing his word,

trusting his grace,

and doing his will.

 

And though darkness and gloom may occasionally surround and even distress us — yet we know that we are of God. It is as natural to us to feed on his word, desire his presence, and seek his love; as it is to the natural child to believe the word, enjoy the presence, and be happy in the love of a kind and tender parent. Our God is love, and believing this, we rely on him, walk with him, and look for his mercy unto eternal life.

 

Beloved reader, endeavor to realize the truth and importance of scripture; to live and act as in the immediate presence of God; and to refresh the mind daily by a view of the perfect work of Jesus, on the ground of which God justifies the ungodly, and walks with poor sinners in peace and love. Stand out from the world — be separate; live by faith, believing God's gracious testimony; lay humbly before the Lord, under a sense of unworthiness; and endeavor to realize daily, your union to Christ, and relation to God as a Father through him. So shall peace be with you, and love with faith from our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our only hope.

Well that concludes the life of First Berkshire in Bracknell after losing the bus war to Courtney Buses. After a long and interesting career in the local transport, First have withdrawn the B1, B2, B3 and B5 local services, along with replacing the 191 with a revised 702, the 94 went to Stagecoach and the 90 went to Reading Buses earlier in the month. Local passengers will have to use the replacement services or use the council-tendered Courtney services instead. Personally, if I had to choose between a Beeline Citaro and a Courtney Solo, I know which I'd choose! Unfortunately, the people of Bracknell no longer have that choice.

 

The last day of First's operation was eventful with lots of enthusiasts in and around Bracknell of all ages, and many drivers were having pictures taken of each other in the good spirit of the final day. With that in mind, here is Citaro 64018 (LK03LNE) displaying route 702 to London; many thanks to the kind driver (who's smiling in this shot!) who changed it for me. According to the First Twitter page, this working has happened once, but it is still rather unusual. The final 702 to be worked out of Bracknell was in fact a Trident (no 33179, see next pic) and not a B9TL, as of the day after they have all been Slough-based. As for the drivers, some have moved to Stagecoach, others to Slough, and some I would imagine have left the industry altogether.

Concluding a day's worth of spotting with a shot like this is probably every spotter's dream. The warm summer light, coupled with a slow climbout with the Ponte Vasco da Gama in the background... Probably doesn't get much better than this!

Concluding my visits to Royal Ascot 2025, the final day is often a more relaxed affair but still brings in plenty of visitors. Around 170 coaches and buses arrived on Saturday 21st June with many different vehicles from those seen earlier in the week. The weather forecast thankfully was slightly off and, although it was muggy, it didn't turn into the energy-sapping sunfest.

 

They say "Tomorrow never comes" but one of them turned up today along with a pair of Routemasters, a funky Unvi Cimo, a bright yellow Hams coach and a rare Ilesbus Calista among others.

Concluding my Metro uploads is this very special Metro, which was owned, albeit for only around 6 months, by the late Princess Diana.

It's been untaxed since 1990, and has done 31k miles. It is now displayed at the Coventry Transport Museum.

A United States Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bomber aircraft taxis on runway.

 

Bomber Task Force Europe has recently concluded a month-long deployment to the United Kingdom. The bombers, part of the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron, were the second Task Force of B-52s to visit Europe in 2022. Bomber Task Force Europe is a standing mission intended to help US Air Force pilots and crews familiarise themselves with European airspace and Allies.

 

The Mach 24 concludes the series of these X-Speeder vehicles. Next week we return to the Mechs, or rather to Mecha.

WEEK 33 – Stateline Kroger (III)

 

Mysteries of the exterior pharmacy sign and classic café door decals aside, we conclude our tour of the 2012’d Stateline Road greenhouse Kroger in Southaven with this wide shot of the building, one I was very pleased to capture :) As sad as it is that its awesome Bauhaus wall graphics couldn’t survive past the winter 2014/2015 remodel of this place, the fact that they remained untouched for 30 whole years before that is an incredibly impressive feat in its own right, and it’s comforting to see so many other original traits of the building continue to stand strong, both inside and out. Like any good Memphis-area Kroger fan, I’ve developed a soft spot for this store, and I always enjoy featuring it on my photostream… I hope you all enjoyed these photos, too. I’m just sorry I let them go unposted for so long, haha! Such is the way with my ever-growing archives, though… :P

THIRMO Swordfish (concept version)

 

The Swordfish R&D project began in late 2016 as a design study for a light, mid-engined sports car capable of taking on the world's GT3 competition.

 

The culmination of this effort in 2017 produced a short-wheelbase MR platform emphasizing speed and agility; thus, power is delivered by a 3.8L "hot V" twin-turbocharged V8 sent through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The relevance of these diverse images to the potential narrative of the verraco will become apparent...

 

A general recap of the left-hand images.

I put forward the idea for 'Transport Dragons' as a way that helped clans of Homo Sapiens survived difficult conditions from their ages of prehistory, including ice, desert and even stretches of water (when a suitably well stretched frame is inverted). With the 'Transport Dragon', bulk weights of camp equipment (including leather and fur) are held tight using a peg and butterfly-knot based cord-leverage tool (currently uncategorized as 'Perforated baton') which I described in past posts and termed the 'tension lever'. Carried aloft aside the compressed camp goods would be pregnant, injured, young or old members of the clan i.e. the vulnerable and the precious. The 'Transport Dragon' frame offered both a redistribution of weight and a protection from the elements including cold winds, high heat and driving rain. These ideas were posted on Flickr from between February and March 2017.

 

Top left. A model of a horizontal Venus figurine representing a fertile woman carried during a journey on a simple frame. Pre hominid ancestors made and changed nest-like beds and refining those skills to help to keep a clan together when travelling in difficult conditions may have resulted in a simple platform held over the shoulder by four members of the clan - the birth of an idea that could help to define a species.

 

Lower left. I projected that the first real 'Transport Dragon' developed as a refinement and expansion of the basic frame: enlarged for multiple carriers to retain lifestyle essentials whilst protecting carriers from the bleak elements via leather pelts dropped down from a structural frame.

 

At this point it can be seen that a link to the principles of the 'managing the wild hypothesis of veraccos' exists. Long before the age of the verraco, and within the great ice ages, a clan, so visible on a vista as a line shadowed by footprints and smells, can - as a combined 'transport dragon', invert their relationship with predators. The apparent prey can attack, for whilst walking to salmon or reindeer rendezvous, the clan was vulnerable to attack from cave lions, hyenas, sabretooths and more. Sheltered within a transport dragon, the individuals can operate as a guise - a mythical animal attracting predators: looking out in secret, and replying to attack with pre-emptive preparation - in effect the core principles of a verraco. Man's mind grew up with this psychology, and principles could pass via long lost stories, stubborn residual examples, and from the collective consciousness of prehistory.

 

One essential that could also be carried within a 'Transport Dragon' was fire, held within the head of the mythical 'animal' in, for example, a basked weave covered in clay - a figure head quietly smoking, like breath on a cold day, ready to raw in the event of an attack. If attacked, the Transport Dragon could ignite real fire from managed embers, it could also defend as a combined crouch inside the thick leather housing, it could spear through slots, and 'the transport dragon' could also ultimately feed off predators, in between locations, without adding to archaeological settlement records or bone middens (an important detail regarding calculations of population levels). This social mentality of inverting issues of predator and prey may remind us of the "managing the wild theory of verracos" proposed in the adjacent post: 'Concluding prehistory. Function. 7:8'.

 

In another early post of this numbered series; "Concluding prehistory. The 'keys' of reality. 5:8" it was remarked that there seemed to be a potential influence on the verraco craftsmen of armature fed examples (weave and stretch) that may have existed outside of granite. I believe that 'Transport dragons' helped take modern man through extreme conditions, and the age of large predators, with ideas of God then held close with each clans chosen mythical or animal form. Here, God was plural for a real reason and man's sense of a globally important omnipotent 'being' a real world experience. As man removed the large predators, and the climate improved, the justification for this guised method of clan life will have faded, and examples of 'Transport Dragons' must have phase changed into rarer residues for festival and for remaining peripheral key clans: residuals, traders, holders of verbal data and quite literally living gods locked into spiritual pasts and futures. Each of these late transport dragons will have diversified according to the specific clan's idiosyncratic history: some with gargoyle-esque 'dragon heads', some with structures lined with 'ancient' pelts of multiple lion heads, some with just one eye, and others structured as half-man, half-animal: all as mythical creatures - all free to find logic from their rich and elaborated verbal pasts and fantasies. Here, the Sphinx might be understood as a regionally well-known example of an important ornamental manifestation of a late 'Transport Dragon' that was eventually stopped in a landscape and memorised as a mountain in stone. The long front legs simply a reflection of the ornate bars. The bronze age wheel as round as a full stop. By contrast to these fantastic and ornamental manifestations, as the miracle of domestication changed wild beasts into living associates, some late residual 'transport dragons' may have been shaped to elevate and worship these new pastoral real-world visions. Here, new ultra functional/descriptive animal varieties of the late 'Transport dragon' would celebrate the then terribly modern feats of man's very spirit of the time, and with clean lines and true empirical description they would have afforded distance from then more phantasmagorical ancient mythical examples. Sculptural and neo-realist late 'Transport dragons' celebrating the new domesticated 'cows', 'horses', 'pigs' and trained 'bears'. In their active age, there will have been 'Transport dragons' with aurock and bear heads smoking their slow fiery breath, and the then new Neolithic package must have asked for cleaner lines to mark contrast with the new spirit of mankind's domesticated wild. Here 'mythology's' Trojan horse was an ultra large and devious late pastoral transport dragon afforded bronze age wheels, and in the greater post Neolithic countryside, just such a weave and stretch animal was from a theme that was easily seen, and maybe some communities of craftsmen of these stitch-and-frame animals (lifted to float for assembled farming, crafting and trading publics) went on to carve in stone as the iron tools proved their presence and promise?

 

As people moved increasingly into scrublands, maybe the art of drawing-in danger was talked back into focus via stories associated with the last ceremonial 'transport dragons' bridging almost 9000 years with stubborn residuals and occasional local reapplications (strength and variety in meme). Here, the verraco concluded a long line of adaptations and expressions that had carried diversities of modern man past dangers from elements and sheer power, and around the planet earth. The 'conversations' between man and landscape, and man and other strong species moving from respectful out-witting competition, to distanced methodology and written protocols, in effect concluding prehistory.

 

The central image is from the Aboussouan collection, and was originally from Syria circa 4000ybp - so a mid bronze age. The wheel and carts arrived in the bronze age, and this early representation shows a concave lower interior level that makes little sense as a cart, but may retain a memory of the form of a late 'Transport Dragon', with head space and shoulder runs: no different here from the way that first cars 'remembered' earlier carts and carriages.

 

The last image is a verraco from the Medieval centre of Bragança in today's Portugal. It has no pedestal, and early medieval authorities seem to have wanted to put a stop to its sense of movement by skewering it with a definitive pillar. Implicit with the idea of verracos is that man had the strength and will to move them to help him attain protection from the wild. Stopping a verraco from moving was perhaps an attempt to stop their aura and pagan meaning from influencing early medieval rural communities.

 

Today, if we scan modern culture we may notice the scarecrow faintly asking pigeons and crows to go away like fay nemesis dilutions in threadbare. We can also see the pantomime-horse designed to play with an idea of a domesticated animal: to be ritually kicked in its behind for the pleasure of a clapping audience.

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Over a hundred notes delivered at blistering speed with a sharp trill to conclude is how the Wren advertises and declares its territory. Actually delightful to hear it declared at top volume from a high perch. We were enchanted by this Wren's performance and to observe such a secretive bird so often seen darting through the undergrowth and disappearing from view.

 

Male Wrens build up to ten nests in a sharply defended territory in the hope of attracting a female who will add her own grass lining to the preferred nest before mating. This one sang on the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss in Lancashire.

So this concludes the celebration of Fleet Week 2010. It was fun to share the shots of the Blue Angels and the crowds with you.

I shall conclude my photo uploads of 2024 with a series of bird photos around Satara Restcamp.

 

This swallow is one of the larger of its species - and a frequent sight all over the National Park. Rarely do they sit still enough to get a good photo of them - and catching one in their incredibly fast flight is yet on my photography wishlist.

Concluding the Datsun/Nissan photos, this was another one I was really, really pleased to acquire. I already knew of this President, as it appeared in What Car? magazine's monthly "Rarity" article sometime in the '70s. I think at the time it was owned by a milkman who bought it after he used to see it at the Japanese Embassy! In the 1990s it was then featured as a Classic & Sportscar magazine 'mystery car'. Maybe it was still an Embassy car at the time of this photo?

 

It doesn't seem to have remained on the road long enough to make it onto the DVLA system.

 

I don't know if it was this exact car, but a 150-series President of this type was banger raced circa 1999/2000.

 

Is that a Citroen DS estate driving by in the background? Looks to be following a Zephyr/Zodiac Mk4.

 

Can anyone identify the location? The caption just says that it was taken in London. The Lewis of Westminster sign may help, although not as much as I'd hoped as they appear to have been a chain. Taken on 5/8/72.

Salinas, California, 2018 – A large-scale, four-month-long gang enforcement operation named “Operation Triple Beam” concluded Feb. 15 resulting in arrest of 197 fugitives, 94 of whom were gang members or associates.

The U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force led operation, involved multiple federal, state and local law enforcement agencies concentrating their efforts and focus on known street gangs in Monterey County, particularly within the City of Salinas.

During Operation Triple Beam (OTB), which was conducted from October 2018 to February 2019, Salinas Police noted significant reduction in violent crime reports in comparison to the prior year. Specifically noted were an 87.5 percent decrease in homicide incidents, a 46.6 percent decrease in drive-by-shootings, a 31.7 percent decrease in shootings overall, and a 66.6 percent decrease in armed robberies.

Since 2010, the U.S. Marshals Service has led more than 60 counter-gang operations which have yielded over 8,000 arrests and the seizure of more than 1,800 illegal firearms.

Concluding this season's trips to Wembley to see the coaches, Saturday 7th June 2025 was the trio of Rugby League Cup Finals bringing a smidge under 180 coaches down mainly from the North of England.

 

Star of the show was a Bakker Van Hool Astromega from The Netherlands. Friend Frans Angevaare commented that the coach "was ordered with Van Hool, caught up in the banktruptcy and delivered by VDL Van Hool. Had to be modified to comply with new safety regulations that weren't in force at the intended delivery date. You can see the camera below the driver's window".

 

Other coaches of note were a trio of Beulas machines, a rather nice Welsh's coach with Acklams, and no less than 9 coaches from the Orion Travel of Manchester fleet (thanks Kels Burke for the heads up!). A good day to wrap things up at Wembley.

The last two months of the year were interesting (in 2023), in terms of hiking. As October concluded, I took a look at my hiking stats for the year and realized that if I hiked hard, I could probably (maybe?) achieve 100,000 feet of elevation gain for the year (well, for the 9-10 months that I spent hiking, since I didn't start until April-ish).

 

However, with roughly one day per week allotted for hiking, that meant focusing on hard hikes - steep, long, and sometimes ill-advised in rain and winter weather. Not to mention that my daylight hours were limited in those winter months - not exactly the time of year that you want to be planning on 4000+ feet or 12+ miles of hiking in a day - and yet, there were four hikes on my list with that combination (plus another five shorter hikes).

 

This particular hike, thankfully, went well. The slog up to the top of Larch Mountain covered about 17 miles round trip and netted me 4400 feet of elevation gain. It was very sobering to view the wildfire damage (from 2017's Eagle Creek fire) that started a mile or two above Multnomah Falls. Equally, it was amazing to reach the border of the fire's reach and - seemingly from one step to another - go from burnt, leafless trees to a canopy of rich greens.

 

Notably, I did finish in the dark - but just barely, as the paved switchbacks down from the top of Multnomah Falls made it easier to cruise through the final mile or so.

Variation n° 2.

Le pont de Fragnée, emblématique pont qui enjambe la Meuse, construit en 1904 pour l’Exposition Universelle de 1905 et reconstruit après la seconde guerre mondiale a une tout autre allure. En effet, quatre perles nacrées d’un poids unitaire de 350 kilos sont installées sur les titans jusqu’alors vides et qui se trouvent aux quatre extrémités de l’ouvrage d’art liégeois.

Le projet, lancé il y a trois ans, consiste à déposer sur les coquilles des Titans, jusqu’alors vides et sculptées par l’artiste Victor Rousseau quatre perles en acier verni.

Jeune artiste ukrainienne vivant à Liège depuis 2017, Maria Vita Goral est diplômée de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Lviv et de l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Liège. C’est elle qui est à l’origine de ce projet.

Champagne, rosé, noir, et blanc, quatre couleurs qui, selon l’artiste, “font référence à la richesse culturelle et naturelle de notre temps. Les quatre coins du monde, les quatre teintes de peau, représentés par ces quatre couleurs des perles, ont tous leur beauté”, conclut-elle.

”L’entièreté du projet a été pensée dans le respect de l’œuvre originale du sculpteur, à la fois structurellement puisque le projet bénéficie des autorisations urbanistiques nécessaires et respecte les contraintes de poids et de forces, notamment pour ne jamais abîmer les œuvres existantes”.

 

Variation #2.

The Fragnée bridge, an emblematic bridge that spans the Meuse, built in 1904 for the Universal Exhibition of 1905 and rebuilt after the Second World War, has a completely different appearance. In fact, four pearly pearls with a unit weight of 350 kilos are installed on the hitherto empty titans which are located at the four ends of the Liège work of art.

The project, launched three years ago, consists of placing four varnished steel pearls on the shells of the Titans, previously empty and sculpted by the artist Victor Rousseau.

A young Ukrainian artist living in Liège since 2017, Maria Vita Goral graduated from the Lviv Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège. She is the originator of this project.

Champagne, rosé, black, and white, four colors which, according to the artist, “refer to the cultural and natural richness of our time. The four corners of the world, the four tones of skin, represented by these four colors of pearls, all have their beauty,” she concludes.

”The entire project was designed with respect for the original work of the sculptor, both structurally since the project benefits from the necessary urban planning authorizations and respects the constraints of weight and strength, in particular to never damage the existing works ”.

Seeing that there is but one Truth, must we not conclude that there is but one Revelation, one sole Tradition possible? To this our answer is, first of all, that Truth and Revelation are not absolutely equivalent terms, since Truth is situated beyond forms, whereas Revelation, or the Tradition which derives from it, belongs to the formal order, and that indeed by definition; but to speak of form is to speak of diversity, and so of plurality; the grounds for the existence and nature of form are: expression, limitation, differentiation. What enters into form, thereby enters also into number, hence into repetition and diversity; the formal principle - inspired by the infinity of the Divine Possibility - confers diversity on this repetition.

 

One could conceive, it is true, that there might be only one Revelation or Tradition for our human world and that diversity should be realised through other worlds, unknown by man or even unknowable by him; but that would imply a failure to understand that what determines the difference among forms of Truth is the difference among human receptacles.

 

For thousands of years already, humanity has been divided

into several fundamentally different branches, which constitute so many complete humanities, more or less closed in on themselves; the existence of spiritual receptacles so different and so original demands differentiated refractions of the one Truth. Let us note that this is not always a question of race, but more often of human groups, very diverse perhaps, but none the less subject to mental conditions which, taken as a whole, make of them sufficiently homogeneous spiritual recipients; though this fact does not prevent some individuals

from being able to leave their framework, for the human collectivity never has anything absolute about it. This being so, it can be said that the diverse Revelations do not really contradict one another, since they do not apply to the same receptacle, and since God never addresses the same message to two or more receptacles of divergent character, corresponding analogically, that is, to dimensions which are formally incompatible; contradictions arise only on one and the same level.

 

The apparent antinomies between Traditions are like differences of language or of symbol; contradictions are in human receptacles, not in God; the diversity in the world is a function of its remoteness from the divine Principle, which amounts to saying that the Creator cannot will both that the world should be, and that it should not be the world.

 

If Revelations more or less exclude one another, this is so of

necessity because God, when He speaks, expresses Himself in absolute mode; but this absoluteness relates to the universal content rather than to the form; it applies to the latter only in a relative and symbolical sense, because the form is a symbol of the content and so too of humanity as a whole, to which this content is, precisely, addressed.

 

It cannot be that God should compare the diverse Revelations

from outside as might a scholar; He keeps Himself so to speak at the center of each Revelation, as if it were the only one.

 

Revelation speaks an absolute language, because God is absolute - not because the form is; in other words, the absoluteness of the Revelation is absolute in itself, but relative qua form.

 

The language of the sacred Scriptures is divine, but at the same time it is necessarily the language of men; it is made for men and could be divine only in an indirect manner. This incommensurability between God and our means of expression is clear in the Scriptures, where neither our words, nor our logic are adequate to the celestial intention; the language of mortals does not a priori envisage things sub specie aetemitatis (from the viewpoint of eternity).

 

The uncreated Word shatters created speech while directing it towards the Truth; it manifests thus its transcendence in relation to the limitations of human powers of logic; man must be able to overstep these limits if he wishes to attain the divine meaning of the words, and he oversteps them in metaphysical knowledge, the fruit of pure intellection, and in a certain fashion also in love, when he touches the essences. To wish to reduce divine Truth to the conditionings of earthly truth is to forget that there is no common measure between the finite and the Infinite.

Sunday morning concluded with my other SX acquisition that was stuck wide open, the Mamiya/Sekor SX 50mm f/2. Samples for comparison with the older Tomioka-made AUTO reveal the previous version to be a bit more center sharp. Bokeh is great when close focus shooting. Medium distances of 2-3 meters and the bokeh is no longer appealing.

We weren't the only one with our eyes on the Perseid meteor shower last night. Tonight is the peak. Look Northeast in the constellation Perseus before the moon rises.

 

Tanner Squid was fixated on something in the yard so I shined my trusty flashlight and discovered this big scorpion. Luckily TS didn't try to attack or eat it. I put him in a jar (the scorpion) until the night festivities were concluded then let him loose in a far corner of our yard.

 

Also known as giant hairy scorpion , or Arizona Desert hairy scorpion. The largest in North America. Their venom is mild unless you're allergic to it, then it can be a problem.

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?

I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.

 

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.

 

Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.

Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.

 

With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.

 

This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.

Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.

 

In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.

What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.

The true creator was Jonathan Ive.

A minority of people may share this perspective with me.

 

However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.

 

The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.

Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.

 

It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.

 

I have always loved music.

Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.

It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.

 

And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.

(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)

 

Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.

It was those artists who moved me to my core.

 

The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.

Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.

In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.

Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.

 

Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.

On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.

Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.

If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.

The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.

My wife is showing us the hotel room.

 

But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.

 

When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

マークザッカーバーグ氏の批判に、アップルは耳を傾けるだろうか。

僕にはそう思えない。アップルヴィジョンプロに夢を見せられた僕には。

 

メタのマークザッカーバーグ氏は、有名なポッドキャストに出演し、アップルはアイフォン以来革新的な製品を発売せず、売り上げも落ちていると批判したようだ。

アップル発祥のポッドキャストに現れ、アップルを批判すると言うのは軽いジョークに思えるが、真剣に訴えたんだろうと僕は思う。

なぜなら、今の彼はARグラスという武器を手にしているからだ。

おそらく、さまざまな関係機関や優秀なスタッフが彼を支え、それなりの目標を達成したんだろうが、パワーブック540cから使い続けてきた僕のような古いアップルファンからしてみれば、まだ物作りのアイデンティを彼からはまったく感じない。

 

これは他の、現在世界を制覇しているIT企業らも含む。

メタ、アマゾン、テスラ。マイクロソフト。グーグル。

社名が並ぶだけで、このテキストを読まれている方は名前と顔をすでに浮かべているはずだ。

 

僕は以前、スティーブ・ジョブズはアーティストではないと書いた。

彼は、現世界に散らばったイメージを紡ぎ合わせ、それを膨らます。そして未来へリンクさせる。それが得意だっただけだ。

実際に創作していたのはジョナサンアイブだ。少数ながらも僕のような意見を持っている方もいるだろう。

 

しかし、先述したIT関連の面々が、トランプ氏に再び権力が戻るとなった途端に会社の方針を覆す様子を見ていると、僕は一言、どうしても意見したいのだ。

 

彼らが作ったARグラスや車などには、肝心な観念が欠けている。思想という重い言葉や、軽めのアイデンティティと言い換えてもいい。

確かに、ティムクック氏やアップルの現在のスタッフらは、発売前の商品に関して口を滑らせることが多くなった。

 

僕は、以前から書いているように音楽が大好きだ。

外界を断ち、アーティストらがスタジオにこもって、怒りや憎しみ、喜びや悲しみを一心不乱になって一音に吹き込む。何かを託すと言ってもいい。

そして、完成したアルバムを発表し、どんな思いを込めて制作したのかを語る。(僕が好きなプリンスはほとんど語らなかったので、完成された作品を理解する必要があった)

 

アルバムが完成し、発表するまで、彼らはひとことも語らない。

僕の胸を震わせたのは、そんなアーティストらだった。

 

僕の中に淡く灯っているアップルの革新性は、いまでも消えていない。

それは昨年、大失敗だと批判されたアップルヴィジョンプロでさえも消すことはできない。むしろ、アイフォン以上の強烈な光を放っている。

ただの斬新な電化製品ではなく、細かな電気部品の向こうに観念や思想を感じるからだ。

 

残念ながら、メタのARグラスやテスラの車に、僕がその観念や思想を感じることは今後もないだろう。

 

長々と書いてきたが、結論は以下の記事だ。

アップルは、トランプ氏になびかなかったのだ。

 

アップル社の観念や思想とは、具体的に何かと訊かれたら、僕はこう答える。

アップルとは、自分自身を信じる人間が集まっているグループだ。

 

たぶん、天国のスティーブ・ジョブズは、僕がクソ真面目に書いたテキストを、鼻で笑っていることだろう。

トランプ氏に媚びない会社。

それがAppleさ。:)

1993年6月6日、僕らは結婚し、そのままニューヨークを経由して、バハマのナッソーへ向かいました。

目的地は、亡くなられたダイアナ妃が新婚旅行へ向かったピンクサンドビーチです。

 あらすじ

 大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。

 上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。

 そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。

 大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。

 「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」

 ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。

  

本編

 

人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。

 ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。

 もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。

 二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。

 再生だ。

 明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。

 それが再生の意味だ。

To conclude our photos from Harlow Carr Gardens I thought that putting together a video of what was a most wonderful afternoon was appropriate. Karen and I had the most delightful time and one I am sure we will repeat the next time we are in Harrogate.

The afternoon flew by and we were so relaxed two ladies enjoying a pleasant Sunday afternoon.

Fun Fact: the release of Operation Red Crow marked the beginning of parlour/drinking games on siege. Echo's ability to make people "drunk" introduced new (non-official) game modes such as "Drunk Deagle-Off", Drunk Hide-And-Sledge" and "Drunk Deffence Terro-Hunt".

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, also known as Mustafa Kemal Pasha until 1921, and Ghazi Mustafa Kemal from 1921 until the Surname Law of 1934 (c. 1881 – 10 November 1938), was a Turkish field marshal, revolutionary statesman, author, and the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938. He undertook sweeping progressive reforms, which modernized Turkey into a secular, industrializing nation. Ideologically a secularist and nationalist, his policies and socio-political theories became known as Kemalism.

 

Atatürk came to prominence for his role in securing the Ottoman Turkish victory at the Battle of Gallipoli (1915) during World War I. During this time, the Ottoman Empire perpetrated genocides against its Greek, Armenian and Assyrian subjects; while not directly involved, Atatürk's role in their aftermath has been controversial. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, he led the Turkish National Movement, which resisted mainland Turkey's partition among the victorious Allied powers. Establishing a provisional government in the present-day Turkish capital Ankara (known in English at the time as Angora), he defeated the forces sent by the Allies, thus emerging victorious from what was later referred to as the Turkish War of Independence. He subsequently proceeded to abolish the sultanate in 1922 and proclaimed the foundation of the Turkish Republic in its place the following year.

 

As the president of the newly formed Turkish Republic, Atatürk initiated a rigorous program of political, economic, and cultural reforms with the ultimate aim of building a republican and secular nation-state. He made primary education free and compulsory, opening thousands of new schools all over the country. He also introduced the Latin-based Turkish alphabet, replacing the old Ottoman Turkish alphabet. Turkish women received equal civil and political rights during Atatürk's presidency. In particular, women were given voting rights in local elections by Act no. 1580 on 3 April 1930 and a few years later, in 1934, full universal suffrage. His government carried out a policy of Turkification, trying to create a homogeneous, unified and above all secular nation under the Turkish banner. Under Atatürk, the minorities in Turkey were ordered to speak Turkish in public, but were allowed to maintain their own languages in private and within their own communities; non-Turkish toponyms were replaced and non-Turkish families were ordered to adopt a Turkish surname. The Turkish Parliament granted him the surname Atatürk in 1934, which means "Father of the Turks", in recognition of the role he played in building the modern Turkish Republic. He died on 10 November 1938 at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, at the age of 57; he was succeeded as president by his long-time prime minister İsmet İnönü and was honored with a state funeral.

 

In 1981, the centennial of Atatürk's birth, his memory was honoured by the United Nations and UNESCO, which declared it The Atatürk Year in the World and adopted the Resolution on the Atatürk Centennial, describing him as "the leader of the first struggle given against colonialism and imperialism" and a "remarkable promoter of the sense of understanding between peoples and durable peace between the nations of the world and that he worked all his life for the development of harmony and cooperation between peoples without distinction". Atatürk was also credited for his peace-in-the-world oriented foreign policy and friendship with neighboring countries such as Iran, Yugoslavia, Iraq, and Greece, as well as the creation of the Balkan Pact that resisted the expansionist aggressions of Fascist Italy and Tsarist Bulgaria.

 

The Turkish War of Independence (19 May 1919 – 24 July 1923) was a series of military campaigns and a revolution waged by the Turkish National Movement, after parts of the Ottoman Empire were occupied and partitioned following its defeat in World War I. The conflict was between the Turkish Nationalists against Allied and separatist forces over the application of Wilsonian principles, especially national self-determination, in post-World War I Anatolia and Eastern Thrace. The revolution concluded the collapse of the Ottoman Empire; the Ottoman monarchy and the Islamic caliphate were abolished, and the Republic of Turkey was declared in Anatolia and Eastern Thrace. This resulted in a transfer of vested sovereignty from the sultan-caliph to the nation, setting the stage for Republican Turkey's period of nationalist revolutionary reform.

 

While World War I ended for the Ottoman Empire with the Armistice of Mudros, the Allied Powers continued occupying and securing land per the Sykes–Picot Agreement, as well as to facilitate the prosecution of former members of the Committee of Union and Progress and those involved in the Armenian genocide. Ottoman military commanders therefore refused orders from both the Allies and the Ottoman government to surrender and disband their forces. In an atmosphere of turmoil throughout the remainder of the empire, sultan Mehmed VI dispatched Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk), a well-respected and high-ranking general, to Anatolia to restore order; however, Mustafa Kemal became an enabler and eventually leader of Turkish Nationalist resistance against the Ottoman government, Allied powers, and separatists.

 

In an attempt to establish control over the power vacuum in Anatolia, the Allies agreed to launch a Greek peacekeeping force into Anatolia and occupy Smyrna (İzmir), inflaming sectarian tensions and beginning the Turkish War of Independence. A nationalist counter government led by Mustafa Kemal was established in Ankara when it became clear the Ottoman government was appeasing the Allied powers. The Allies soon pressured the Ottoman government in Constantinople to suspend the Constitution, shutter Parliament, and sign the Treaty of Sèvres, a treaty unfavorable to Turkish interests that the "Ankara government" declared illegal.

 

In the ensuing war, Turkish and Syrian forces defeated the French in the south, and remobilized army units went on to partition Armenia with the Bolsheviks, resulting in the Treaty of Kars (October 1921). The Western Front of the independence war is known as the Greco-Turkish War, in which Greek forces at first encountered unorganized resistance. However, İsmet Pasha (İnönü)'s organization of militia into a regular army paid off when Ankara forces fought the Greeks in the First and Second Battle of İnönü. The Greek army emerged victorious in the Battle of Kütahya-Eskişehir and decided to drive on the Nationalist capital of Ankara, stretching their supply lines. The Turks checked their advance in the Battle of Sakarya and eventually counter-attacked in the Great Offensive, which expelled Greek forces from Anatolia in the span of three weeks. The war effectively ended with the recapture of İzmir and the Chanak Crisis, prompting the signing of another armistice in Mudanya.

 

The Grand National Assembly in Ankara was recognized as the legitimate Turkish government, which signed the Treaty of Lausanne (July 1923), a treaty more favorable to Turkey than the Sèvres Treaty. The Allies evacuated Anatolia and Eastern Thrace, the Ottoman government was overthrown and the monarchy abolished, and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (which remains Turkey's primary legislative body today) declared the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923. With the war, a population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire, and the abolition of the sultanate, the Ottoman era came to an end, and with Atatürk's reforms, the Turks created the modern, secular nation-state of Turkey. On 3 March 1924, the Ottoman caliphate was also abolished.

 

The ethnic demographics of the modern Turkish Republic were significantly impacted by the earlier Armenian genocide and the deportations of Greek-speaking, Orthodox Christian Rum people. The Turkish Nationalist Movement carried out massacres and deportations to eliminate native Christian populations—a continuation of the Armenian genocide and other ethnic cleansing operations during World War I. Following these campaigns of ethnic cleansing, the historic Christian presence in Anatolia was destroyed, in large part, and the Muslim demographic had increased from 80% to 98%.

 

Following the chaotic politics of the Second Constitutional Era, the Ottoman Empire came under the control of the Committee of Union and Progress in a coup in 1913, and then further consolidated its control after the assassination of Mahmud Shevket Pasha.[citation needed] Founded as a radical revolutionary group seeking to prevent a collapse of the Ottoman Empire, by the eve of World War I it decided that the solution was to implement nationalist and centralizing policies. The CUP reacted to the losses of land and the expulsion of Muslims from the Balkan Wars by turning even more nationalistic. Part of its effort to consolidate power was to proscribe and exile opposition politicians from the Freedom and Accord Party to remote Sinop.

 

The Unionists brought the Ottoman Empire into World War I on the side of Germany and Austria-Hungary, during which a genocidal campaign was waged against Ottoman Christians, namely Armenians, Pontic Greeks, and Assyrians. It was based on an alleged conspiracy that the three groups would rebel on the side of the Allies, so collective punishment was applied. A similar suspicion and suppression from the Turkish nationalist government was directed towards the Arab and Kurdish populations, leading to localized rebellions. The Entente powers reacted to these developments by charging the CUP leaders, commonly known as the Three Pashas, with "Crimes against humanity" and threatened accountability. They also had imperialist ambitions on Ottoman territory, with a major correspondence over a post-war settlement in the Ottoman Empire being leaked to the press as the Sykes–Picot Agreement. With Saint Petersburg's exit from World War I and descent into civil war, driven in part from the Ottomans' closure of the Turkish straits of goods bound to Russia, a new imperative was given to the Entente powers to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war to restart the Eastern Front.

 

World War I would be the nail in the coffin of Ottomanism, a monarchist and multicultural nationalism. Mistreatment of non-Turk groups after 1913, and the general context of great socio-political upheaval that occurred in the aftermath of World War I, meant many minorities now wished to divorce their future from imperialism to form futures of their own by separating into (often republican) nation-states.

 

In the summer months of 1918, the leaders of the Central Powers realized that the Great War was lost, including the Ottomans'. Almost simultaneously the Palestinian Front and then the Macedonian Front collapsed. The sudden decision by Bulgaria to sign an armistice cut communications from Constantinople (İstanbul) to Vienna and Berlin, and opened the undefended Ottoman capital to Entente attack. With the major fronts crumbling, Unionist Grand Vizier Talât Pasha intended to sign an armistice, and resigned on 8 October 1918 so that a new government would receive less harsh armistice terms. The Armistice of Mudros was signed on 30 October 1918, ending World War I for the Ottoman Empire. Three days later, the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP)—which governed the Ottoman Empire as a one-party state since 1913—held its last congress, where it was decided the party would be dissolved. Talât, Enver Pasha, Cemal Pasha, and five other high-ranking members of the CUP escaped the Ottoman Empire on a German torpedo boat later that night, plunging the country into a power vacuum.

 

The armistice was signed because the Ottoman Empire had been defeated in important fronts, but the military was intact and retreated in good order. Unlike other Central Powers, the Allies did not mandate an abdication of the imperial family as a condition for peace, nor did they request the Ottoman Army to dissolve its general staff. Though the army suffered from mass desertion throughout the war which led to banditry, there was no threat of mutiny or revolutions like in Germany, Austria-Hungary, or Russia. This is despite famine and economic collapse that was brought on by the extreme levels of mobilization, destruction from the war, disease, and mass murder since 1914.

 

Due to the Turkish nationalist policies pursued by the CUP against Ottoman Christians by 1918 the Ottoman Empire held control over a mostly homogeneous land of Muslims from Eastern Thrace to the Persian border. These included mostly Turks, as well as Kurds, Circassians, and Muhacir groups from Rumeli. Most Muslim Arabs were now outside of the Ottoman Empire and under Allied occupation, with some "imperialists" still loyal to the Ottoman Sultanate-Caliphate, and others wishing for independence or Allied protection under a League of Nations mandate. Sizable Greek and Armenian minorities remained within its borders, and most of these communities no longer wished to remain under the Empire.

 

On 30 October 1918, the Armistice of Mudros was signed between the Ottoman Empire and the Allies of World War I, bringing hostilities in the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I to an end. The Ottoman Army was to demobilize, its navy and air force handed to the Allies, and occupied territory in the Caucasus and Persia to be evacuated. Critically, Article VII granted the Allies the right to occupy forts controlling the Turkish Straits and the vague right to occupy "in case of disorder" any territory if there were a threat to security. The clause relating to the occupation of the straits was meant to secure a Southern Russian intervention force, while the rest of the article was used to allow for Allied controlled peace-keeping forces. There was also a hope to follow through punishing local actors that carried out exterminatory orders from the CUP government against Armenian Ottomans. For now, the House of Osman escaped the fates of the Hohenzollerns, Habsburgs, and Romanovs to continue ruling their empire, though at the cost of its remaining sovereignty.

 

On 13 November 1918, a French brigade entered Constantinople to begin a de facto occupation of the Ottoman capital and its immediate dependencies. This was followed by a fleet consisting of British, French, Italian and Greek ships deploying soldiers on the ground the next day, totaling 50,000 troops in Constantinople. The Allied Powers stated that the occupation was temporary and its purpose was to protect the monarchy, the caliphate and the minorities. Somerset Arthur Gough-Calthorpe—the British signatory of the Mudros Armistice—stated the Triple Entente's public position that they had no intention to dismantle the Ottoman government or place it under military occupation by "occupying Constantinople". However, dismantling the government and partitioning the Ottoman Empire among the Allied nations had been an objective of the Entente since the start of WWI.

 

A wave of seizures took place in the rest of the country in the following months. Citing Article VII, British forces demanded that Turkish troops evacuate Mosul, claiming that Christian civilians in Mosul and Zakho were killed en masse. In the Caucasus, Britain established a presence in Menshevik Georgia and the Lori and Aras valleys as peace-keepers. On 14 November, joint Franco-Greek occupation was established in the town of Uzunköprü in Eastern Thrace as well as the railway axis until the train station of Hadımköy on the outskirts of Constantinople. On 1 December, British troops based in Syria occupied Kilis, Marash, Urfa and Birecik. Beginning in December, French troops began successive seizures of the province of Adana, including the towns of Antioch, Mersin, Tarsus, Ceyhan, Adana, Osmaniye, and İslâhiye, incorporating the area into the Occupied Enemy Territory Administration North while French forces embarked by gunboats and sent troops to the Black Sea ports of Zonguldak and Karadeniz Ereğli commanding Turkey's coal mining region. These continued seizures of land prompted Ottoman commanders to refuse demobilization and prepare for the resumption of war.

 

The British similarly asked Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk) to turn over the port of Alexandretta (İskenderun), which he reluctantly did, following which he was recalled to Constantinople. He made sure to distribute weapons to the population to prevent them from falling into the hands of Allied forces. Some of these weapons were smuggled to the east by members of Karakol, a successor to the CUP's Special Organization, to be used in case resistance was necessary in Anatolia. Many Ottoman officials participated in efforts to conceal from the occupying authorities details of the burgeoning independence movement spreading throughout Anatolia.

 

Other commanders began refusing orders from the Ottoman government and the Allied powers. After Mustafa Kemal Pasha returned to Constantinople, Ali Fuat Pasha (Cebesoy) brought XX Corps under his command. He marched first to Konya and then to Ankara to organise resistance groups, such as the Circassian çetes he assembled with guerilla leader Çerkes Ethem. Meanwhile, Kazım Karabekir Pasha refused to surrender his intact and powerful XV Corps in Erzurum. Evacuation from the Caucusus, puppet republics and Muslim militia groups were established in the army's wake to hamper with the consolidation of the new Armenian state. Elsewhere in the country, regional nationalist resistance organizations known as Şuras –meaning "councils", not unlike soviets in revolutionary Russia– were founded, most pledging allegiance to the Defence of National Rights movement that protested continued Allied occupation and appeasement by the Sublime Porte.

 

Following the occupation of Constantinople, Mehmed VI Vahdettin dissolved the Chamber of Deputies which was dominated by Unionists elected back in 1914, promising elections for the next year. Vahdettin just ascended to the throne only months earlier with the death of Mehmed V Reşad. He was disgusted with the policies of the CUP, and wished to be a more assertive sovereign than his diseased half brother. Greek and Armenian Ottomans declared the termination of their relationship with the Ottoman Empire through their respective patriarchates, and refused to partake in any future election. With the collapse of the CUP and its censorship regime, an outpouring of condemnation against the party came from all parts of Ottoman media.

 

A general amnesty was soon issued, allowing the exiled and imprisoned dissidents persecuted by the CUP to return to Constantinople. Vahdettin invited the pro-Palace politician Damat Ferid Pasha, leader of the reconstituted Freedom and Accord Party, to form a government, whose members quickly set out to purge the Unionists from the Ottoman government. Ferid Pasha hoped that his Anglophilia and an attitude of appeasement would induce less harsh peace terms from the Allied powers. However, his appointment was problematic for nationalists, many being members of the liquidated committee that were surely to face trial. Years of corruption, unconstitutional acts, war profiteering, and enrichment from ethnic cleansing and genocide by the Unionists soon became basis of war crimes trials and courts martial trials held in Constantinople.[citation needed] While many leading Unionists were sentenced lengthy prison sentences, many made sure to escape the country before Allied occupation or to regions that the government now had minimal control over; thus most were sentenced in absentia. The Allies encouragement of the proceedings and the use of British Malta as their holding ground made the trials unpopular. The partisan nature of the trials was not lost on observers either. The hanging of the Kaymakam of Boğazlıyan district Mehmed Kemal resulted in a demonstration against the courts martials trials.

 

With all the chaotic politics in the capital and uncertainty of the severity of the incoming peace treaty, many Ottomans looked to Washington with the hope that the application of Wilsonian principles would mean Constantinople would stay Turkish, as Muslims outnumbered Christians 2:1. The United States never declared war on the Ottoman Empire, so many imperial elite believed Washington could be a neutral arbiter that could fix the empire's problems. Halide Edip (Adıvar) and her Wilsonian Principles Society led the movement that advocated for the empire to be governed by an American League of Nations Mandate (see United States during the Turkish War of Independence). American diplomats attempted to ascertain a role they could play in the area with the Harbord and King–Crane Commissions. However, with the collapse of Woodrow Wilson's health, the United States diplomatically withdrew from the Middle East to focus on Europe, leaving the Entente powers to construct a post-Ottoman order.

 

The Entente would have arrived at Constantinople to discover an administration attempting to deal with decades of accumulated refugee crisis. The new government issued a proclamation allowing for deportees to return to their homes, but many Greeks and Armenians found their old homes occupied by desperate Rumelian and Caucasian Muslim refugees which were settled in their properties during the First World War. Ethnic conflict restarted in Anatolia; government officials responsible for resettling Christian refugees often assisted Muslim refugees in these disputes, prompting European powers to continue bringing Ottoman territory under their control. Of the 800,000 Ottoman Christian refugees, approximately over half returned to their homes by 1920. Meanwhile 1.4 million refugees from the Russian Civil War would pass through the Turkish straits and Anatolia, with 150,000 White émigrés choosing to settle in Istanbul for short or long term (see Evacuation of the Crimea). Many provinces were simply depopulated from years of fighting, conscription, and ethnic cleansing (see Ottoman casualties of World War I). The province of Yozgat lost 50% of its Muslim population from conscription, while according to the governor of Van, almost 95% of its prewar residents were dead or internally displaced.

 

Administration in much of the Anatolian and Thracian countryside would soon all but collapse by 1919. Army deserters who turned to banditry essentially controlled fiefdoms with tacit approval from bureaucrats and local elites. An amnesty issued in late 1918 saw these bandits strengthen their positions and fight amongst each other instead of returning to civilian life. Albanian and Circassian muhacirs resettled by the government in northwestern Anatolia and Kurds in southeastern Anatolia were engaged in blood feuds that intensified during the war and were hesitant to pledge allegiance to the Defence of Rights movement, and only would if officials could facilitate truces. Various Muhacir groups were suspicious of the continued Ittihadist ideology in the Defence of Rights movement, and the potential for themselves to meet fates 'like the Armenians' especially as warlords hailing from those communities assisted the deportations of the Christians even though as many commanders in the Nationalist movement also had Caucasian and Balkan Muslim ancestry.

 

With Anatolia in practical anarchy and the Ottoman army being questionably loyal in reaction to Allied land seizures, Mehmed VI established the military inspectorate system to reestablish authority over the remaining empire. Encouraged by Karabekir and Edmund Allenby, he assigned Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk) as the inspector of the Ninth Army Troops Inspectorate –based in Erzurum– to restore order to Ottoman military units and to improve internal security on 30 April 1919, with his first assignment to suppress a rebellion by Greek rebels around the city of Samsun.

 

Mustafa Kemal was a well known, well respected, and well connected army commander, with much prestige coming from his status as the "Hero of Anafartalar"—for his role in the Gallipoli Campaign—and his title of "Honorary Aide-de-camp to His Majesty Sultan" gained in the last months of WWI. This choice would seem curious, as he was a nationalist and a fierce critic of the government's accommodating policy to the Entente powers. He was also an early member of the CUP. However Kemal Pasha did not associate himself with the fanatical faction of the CUP, many knew that he frequently clashed with the radicals of the Central Committee like Enver. He was therefore sidelined to the periphery of power throughout the Great War; after the CUP's dissolution he vocally aligned himself with moderates that formed the Liberal People's Party instead of the rump radical faction which formed the Renewal Party (both parties would be banned in May 1919 for being successors of the CUP). All these reasons allowed him to be the most legitimate nationalist for the sultan to placate. In this new political climate, he sought to capitalize on his war exploits to attain a better job, indeed several times he unsuccessfully lobbied for his inclusion in cabinet as War Minister. His new assignment gave him effective plenipotentiary powers over all of Anatolia which was meant to accommodate him and other nationalists to keep them loyal to the government.

 

Mustafa Kemal had earlier declined to become the leader of the Sixth Army headquartered in Nusaybin. But according to Patrick Balfour, through manipulation and the help of friends and sympathizers, he became the inspector of virtually all of the Ottoman forces in Anatolia, tasked with overseeing the disbanding process of remaining Ottoman forces. Kemal had an abundance of connections and personal friends concentrated in the post-armistice War Ministry, a powerful tool that would help him accomplish his secret goal: to lead a nationalist movement to safeguard Turkish interests against the Allied powers and a collaborative Ottoman government.

 

The day before his departure to Samsun on the remote Black Sea coast, Kemal had one last audience with Sultan Vahdettin, where he affirmed his loyalty to the sultan-caliph. It was in this meeting that they were informed of the botched occupation ceremony of Smyrna (İzmir) by the Greeks. He and his carefully selected staff left Constantinople aboard the old steamer SS Bandırma on the evening of 16 May 1919.

 

On 19 January 1919, the Paris Peace Conference was first held, at which Allied nations set the peace terms for the defeated Central Powers, including the Ottoman Empire. As a special body of the Paris Conference, "The Inter-Allied Commission on Mandates in Turkey", was established to pursue the secret treaties they had signed between 1915 and 1917. Italy sought control over the southern part of Anatolia under the Agreement of St.-Jean-de-Maurienne. France expected to exercise control over Hatay, Lebanon, Syria, and a portion of southeastern Anatolia based on the Sykes–Picot Agreement.

 

Greece justified their territorial claims of Ottoman land through the Megali Idea as well as international sympathy from the suffering of Ottoman Greeks in 1914 and 1917–1918. Privately, Greek prime minister Eleftherios Venizelos had British prime minister David Lloyd George's backing not least from Greece's entrance to WWI on the Allied side, but also from his charisma and charming personality. Greece's participation in the Allies' Southern Russian intervention also earned it favors in Paris. His demands included parts of Eastern Thrace, the islands of Imbros (Gökçeada), Tenedos (Bozcaada), and parts of Western Anatolia around the city of Smyrna (İzmir), all of which had large Greek populations. Venizelos also advocated a large Armenian state to check a post-war Ottoman Empire. Greece wanted to incorporate Constantinople, but Entente powers did not give permission. Damat Ferid Pasha went to Paris on behalf of the Ottoman Empire hoping to minimize territorial losses using Fourteen Points rhetoric, wishing for a return to status quo ante bellum, on the basis that every province of the Empire holds Muslim majorities. This plea was met with ridicule.

 

At the Paris Peace Conference, competing claims over Western Anatolia by Greek and Italian delegations led Greece to land the flagship of the Greek Navy at Smyrna, resulting in the Italian delegation walking out of the peace talks. On 30 April, Italy responded to the possible idea of Greek incorporation of Western Anatolia by sending a warship to Smyrna as a show of force against the Greek campaign. A large Italian force also landed in Antalya. Faced with Italian annexation of parts of Asia Minor with a significant ethnic Greek population, Venizelos secured Allied permission for Greek troops to land in Smyrna per Article VII, ostensibly as a peacekeeping force to keep stability in the region. Venizelos's rhetoric was more directed against the CUP regime than the Turks as a whole, an attitude not always shared in the Greek military: "Greece is not making war against Islam, but against the anachronistic [İttihadist] Government, and its corrupt, ignominious, and bloody administration, with a view to the expelling it from those territories where the majority of the population consists of Greeks." It was decided by the Triple Entente that Greece would control a zone around Smyrna and Ayvalık in western Asia Minor.

 

Most historians mark the Greek landing at Smyrna on 15 May 1919 as the start date of the Turkish War of Independence as well as the start of the "Kuva-yi Milliye Phase". The occupation ceremony from the outset was tense from nationalist fervor, with Ottoman Greeks greeting the soldiers with an ecstatic welcome, and Ottoman Muslims protesting the landing. A miscommunication in Greek high command led to an Evzone column marching by the municipal Turkish barracks. The nationalist journalist Hasan Tahsin fired the "first bullet"[note 4] at the Greek standard bearer at the head of the troops, turning the city into a warzone. Süleyman Fethi Bey was murdered by bayonet for refusing to shout "Zito Venizelos" (meaning "long live Venizelos"), and 300–400 unarmed Turkish soldiers and civilians and 100 Greek soldiers and civilians were killed or wounded.

 

Greek troops moved from Smyrna outwards to towns on the Karaburun peninsula; to Selçuk, situated a hundred kilometres south of the city at a key location that commands the fertile Küçük Menderes River valley; and to Menemen towards the north. Guerilla warfare commenced in the countryside, as Turks began to organize themselves into irregular guerilla groups known as Kuva-yi Milliye (national forces), which were soon joined by Ottoman soldiers, bandits, and disaffected farmers. Most Kuva-yi Milliye bands were led by rogue military commanders and members of the Special Organization. The Greek troops based in cosmopolitan Smyrna soon found themselves conducting counterinsurgency operations in a hostile, dominantly Muslim hinterland. Groups of Ottoman Greeks also formed contingents that cooperated with the Greek Army to combat Kuva-yi Milliye within the zone of control. A massacre of Turks at Menemen was followed up with a battle for the town of Aydın, which saw intense intercommunal violence and the razing of the city. What was supposed to be a peacekeeping mission of Western Anatolia instead inflamed ethnic tensions and became a counterinsurgency.

 

The reaction of Greek landing at Smyrna and continued Allied seizures of land served to destabilize Turkish civil society. Ottoman bureaucrats, military, and bourgeoisie trusted the Allies to bring peace, and thought the terms offered at Mudros were considerably more lenient than they actually were. Pushback was potent in the capital, with 23 May 1919 being largest of the Sultanahmet Square demonstrations organized by the Turkish Hearths against the Greek occupation of Smyrna, the largest act of civil disobedience in Turkish history at that point. The Ottoman government condemned the landing, but could do little about it. Ferid Pasha tried to resign, but was urged by the sultan to stay in his office.

 

Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his colleagues stepped ashore in Samsun on 19 May and set up their first quarters in the Mıntıka Palace Hotel. British troops were present in Samsun, and he initially maintained cordial contact. He had assured Damat Ferid about the army's loyalty towards the new government in Constantinople. However, behind the government's back, Kemal made the people of Samsun aware of the Greek and Italian landings, staged discreet mass meetings, made fast connections via telegraph with the army units in Anatolia, and began to form links with various Nationalist groups. He sent telegrams of protest to foreign embassies and the War Ministry about British reinforcements in the area and about British aid to Greek brigand gangs. After a week in Samsun, Kemal and his staff moved to Havza. It was there that he first showed the flag of the resistance.

 

Mustafa Kemal wrote in his memoir that he needed nationwide support to justify armed resistance against the Allied occupation. His credentials and the importance of his position were not enough to inspire everyone. While officially occupied with the disarming of the army, he met with various contacts in order to build his movement's momentum. He met with Rauf Pasha, Karabekir Pasha, Ali Fuat Pasha, and Refet Pasha and issued the Amasya Circular (22 June 1919). Ottoman provincial authorities were notified via telegraph that the unity and independence of the nation was at risk, and that the government in Constantinople was compromised. To remedy this, a congress was to take place in Erzurum between delegates of the Six Vilayets to decide on a response, and another congress would take place in Sivas where every Vilayet should send delegates. Sympathy and an lack of coordination from the capital gave Mustafa Kemal freedom of movement and telegraph use despite his implied anti-government tone.

 

On 23 June, High Commissioner Admiral Calthorpe, realising the significance of Mustafa Kemal's discreet activities in Anatolia, sent a report about the Pasha to the Foreign Office. His remarks were downplayed by George Kidson of the Eastern Department. Captain Hurst of the British occupation force in Samsun warned Admiral Calthorpe one more time, but Hurst's units were replaced with the Brigade of Gurkhas. When the British landed in Alexandretta, Admiral Calthorpe resigned on the basis that this was against the armistice that he had signed and was assigned to another position on 5 August 1919. The movement of British units alarmed the population of the region and convinced them that Mustafa Kemal was right.

 

By early July, Mustafa Kemal Pasha received telegrams from the sultan and Calthorpe, asking him and Refet to cease his activities in Anatolia and return to the capital. Kemal was in Erzincan and did not want to return to Constantinople, concerned that the foreign authorities might have designs for him beyond the sultan's plans. Before resigning from his position, he dispatched a circular to all nationalist organizations and military commanders to not disband or surrender unless for the latter if they could be replaced by cooperative nationalist commanders. Now only a civilian stripped of his command, Mustafa Kemal was at the mercy of the new inspector of Third Army (renamed from Ninth Army) Karabekir Pasha, indeed the War Ministry ordered him to arrest Kemal, an order which Karabekir refused. The Erzurum Congress was a meeting of delegates and governors from the six Eastern Vilayets. They drafted the National Pact (Misak-ı Millî), which envisioned new borders for the Ottoman Empire by applying principles of national self-determination per Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points and the abolition of the capitulations. The Erzurum Congress concluded with a circular that was effectively a declaration of independence: All regions within Ottoman borders upon the signing of the Mudros Armistice were indivisible from the Ottoman state –Greek and Armenian claims on Thrace and Anatolia were moot– and assistance from any country not coveting Ottoman territory was welcome. If the government in Constantinople was not able to attain this after electing a new parliament, they insisted a provisional government should be promulgated to defend Turkish sovereignty. The Committee of Representation was established as a provisional executive body based in Anatolia, with Mustafa Kemal Pasha as its chairman.

 

Following the congress, the Committee of Representation relocated to Sivas. As announced in the Amasya Circular, a new congress was held there in September with delegates from all Anatolian and Thracian provinces. The Sivas Congress repeated the points of the National Pact agreed to in Erzurum, and united the various regional Defence of National Rights Associations organizations, into a united political organisation: Anatolia and Rumeli Defence of Rights Association (A-RMHC), with Mustafa Kemal as its chairman. In an effort show his movement was in fact a new and unifying movement, the delegates had to swear an oath to discontinue their relations with the CUP and to never revive the party (despite most present in Sivas being previous members).[120] It was also decided there that the Ottoman Empire should not be a League of Nations mandate under the United States, especially after the U.S Senate failed to ratify American membership in the League.

 

Momentum was now on the Nationalists' side. A plot by a loyalist Ottoman governor and a British intelligence officer to arrest Kemal before the Sivas Congress led to the cutting of all ties with the Ottoman government until a new election would be held in the lower house of parliament, the Chamber of Deputies. In October 1919, the last Ottoman governor loyal to Constantinople fled his province. Fearing the outbreak of hostilities, all British troops stationed in the Black Sea coast and Kütahya were evacuated. Damat Ferid Pasha resigned, and the sultan replaced him with a general with nationalist credentials: Ali Rıza Pasha. On 16 October 1919, Ali Rıza and the Nationalists held negotiations in Amasya. They agreed in the Amasya Protocol that an election would be called for the Ottoman Parliament to establish national unity by upholding the resolutions made in the Sivas Congress, including the National Pact.

 

By October 1919, the Ottoman government only held de facto control over Constantinople; the rest of the Ottoman Empire was loyal to Kemal's movement to resist a partition of Anatolia and Thrace. Within a few months Mustafa Kemal went from General Inspector of the Ninth Army to a renegade military commander discharged for insubordination to leading a homegrown anti-Entente movement that overthrew a government and driven it into resistance.

 

In December 1919, an election was held for the Ottoman parliament, with polls only open in unoccupied Anatolia and Thrace. It was boycotted by Ottoman Greeks, Ottoman Armenians and the Freedom and Accord Party, resulting in groups associated with the Turkish Nationalist Movement winning, including the A-RMHC. The Nationalists' obvious links to the CUP made the election especially polarizing and voter intimidation and ballot box stuffing in favor of the Kemalists were regular occurrences in rural provinces. This controversy led to many of the nationalist MPs organizing the National Salvation Group separate from Kemal's movement, which risked the nationalist movement splitting in two.

 

Mustafa Kemal was elected an MP from Erzurum, but he expected the Allies neither to accept the Harbord report nor to respect his parliamentary immunity if he went to the Ottoman capital, hence he remained in Anatolia. Mustafa Kemal and the Committee of Representation moved from Sivas to Ankara so that he could keep in touch with as many deputies as possible as they traveled to Constantinople to attend the parliament.

 

Though Ali Rıza Pasha called the election as per the Amasya Protocol to keep unity between the "Istanbul government" and "Ankara government", he was wrong to think the election could bring him any legitimacy. The Ottoman parliament was under the de facto control of the British battalion stationed at Constantinople and any decisions by the parliament had to have the signatures of both Ali Rıza Pasha and the battalion's commanding officer. The only laws that passed were those acceptable to, or specifically ordered by the British.

 

On 12 January 1920, the last session of the Chamber of Deputies met in the capital. First the sultan's speech was presented, and then a telegram from Mustafa Kemal, manifesting the claim that the rightful government of Turkey was in Ankara in the name of the Committee of Representation. On 28 January the MPs from both sides of the isle secretly met to endorse the National Pact as a peace settlement. They added to the points passed in Sivas, calling for plebiscites to be held in West Thrace; Batum, Kars, and Ardahan, and Arab lands on whether to stay in the Empire or not. Proposals were also made to elect Kemal president of the Chamber;[clarification needed] however, this was deferred in the certain knowledge that the British would prorogue the Chamber. The Chamber of Deputies would be forcefully dissolved for passing the National Pact anyway. The National Pact solidified Nationalist interests, which were in conflict with the Allied plans.

 

From February to April, leaders of Britain, France, and Italy met in London to discuss the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire and the crisis in Anatolia. The British began to sense that the elected Ottoman government was under Kemalist influence and if left unchecked, the Entente could once again find themselves at war with the Empire. The Ottoman government was not doing all that it could to suppress the Nationalists.

 

Mustafa Kemal manufactured a crisis to pressure the Istanbul government to pick a side by deploying Kuva-yi Milliye towards İzmit. The British, concerned about the security of the Bosporus Strait, demanded Ali Rıza Pasha to reassert control over the area, to which he responded with his resignation to the sultan.

 

As they were negotiating the partition of the Ottoman Empire, the Allies were growing increasingly concerned about the Turkish National Movement. To this end, the Allied occupational authorities in Istanbul began to plan a raid to arrest nationalist politicians and journalists along with occupying military and police installations and government buildings. On 16 March 1920, the coup was carried out; several Royal Navy warships were anchored in the Galata Bridge to support British forces, including the Indian Army, while they carried out the arrests and occupied several government buildings in the early hours of the morning.

 

An Indian Army operation, the Şehzadebaşı raid, resulted in 5 Ottoman soldiers from the 10th Infantry Division being killed when troops raided their barracks. Among those arrested were the senior leadership of the Turkish National Movement and former members of the CUP. 150 arrested Turkish politicians accused of war crimes were interned in Malta and became known as the Malta exiles.

 

Mustafa Kemal was ready for this move. He warned all the Nationalist organisations that there would be misleading declarations from the capital. He warned that the only way to counter Allied movements was to organise protests. He declared "Today the Turkish nation is called to defend its capacity for civilization, its right to life and independence – its entire future".

 

On 18 March, the Chamber of Deputies declared that it was unacceptable to arrest five of its members, and dissolved itself. Mehmed VI confirmed this and declared the end of Constitutional Monarchy and a return to absolutism. University students were forbidden from joining political associations inside and outside the classroom. With the lower elected Chamber of Deputies shuttered, the Constitution terminated, and the capital occupied; Sultan Vahdettin, his cabinet, and the appointed Senate were all that remained of the Ottoman government, and were basically a puppet regime of the Allied powers. Grand Vizier Salih Hulusi Pasha declared Mustafa Kemal's struggle legitimate, and resigned after less than a month in office. In his place, Damat Ferid Pasha returned to the premiership. The Sublime Porte's decapitation by the Entente allowed Mustafa Kemal to consolidate his position as the sole leader of Turkish resistance against the Allies, and to that end made him the legitimate representative of the Turkish people.

 

The strong measures taken against the Nationalists by the Allies in March 1920 began a distinct new phase of the conflict. Mustafa Kemal sent a note to the governors and force commanders, asking them to conduct elections to provide delegates for a new parliament to represent the Ottoman (Turkish) people, which would convene in Ankara. With the proclamation of the counter-government, Kemal would then ask the sultan to accept its authority. Mustafa Kemal appealed to the Islamic world, asking for help to make sure that everyone knew he was still fighting in the name of the sultan who was also the caliph. He stated he wanted to free the caliph from the Allies. He found an ally in the Khilafat movement of British India, where Indians protested Britain's planned dismemberment of Turkey. A committee was also started for sending funds to help the soon to be proclaimed Ankara government of Mustafa Kemal. A flood of supporters moved to Ankara just ahead of the Allied dragnets. Included among them were Halide Edip and Abdülhak Adnan (Adıvar), Mustafa İsmet Pasha (İnönü), Mustafa Fevzi Pasha (Çakmak), many of Kemal's allies in the Ministry of War, and Celalettin Arif, the president of the now shuttered Chamber of Deputies. Celaleddin Arif's desertion of the capital was of great significance, as he declared that the Ottoman Parliament had been dissolved illegally.

 

Some 100 members of the Chamber of Deputies were able to escape the Allied roundup and joined 190 deputies elected. In March 1920, Turkish revolutionaries announced the establishment of a new parliament in Ankara known as the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNA) that was dominated by the A-RMHC.[citation needed] The parliament included Turks, Circassians, Kurds, and one Jew. They met in a building that used to serve as the provincial headquarters of the local CUP chapter. The inclusion of "Turkey" in its name reflected a increasing trend of new ways Ottoman citizens thought of their country, and was the first time it was formally used as the name of the country. On 23 April, the assembly, assuming full governmental powers, gathered for the first time, electing Mustafa Kemal its first Speaker and Prime Minister.

 

Hoping to undermine the Nationalist Movement, Mehmed VI issued a fatwa to qualify the Turkish revolutionaries as infidels, calling for the death of its leaders. The fatwa stated that true believers should not go along with the Nationalist Movement as they committed apostasy. The mufti of Ankara Rifat Börekçi issued a simultaneous fatwa, declaring that the caliphate was under the control of the Entente and the Ferid Pasha government. In this text, the Nationalist Movement's goal was stated as freeing the sultanate and the caliphate from its enemies. In reaction to the desertion of several prominent figures to the Nationalist Movement, Ferid Pasha ordered Halide Edip, Ali Fuat and Mustafa Kemal to be sentenced to death in absentia for treason.

 

On 28 April the sultan raised 4,000 soldiers known as the Kuva-yi İnzibatiye (Caliphate Army) to combat the Nationalists. Then using money from the Allies, another force about 2,000 strong from non-Muslim inhabitants were initially deployed in İznik. The sultan's government sent the forces under the name of the Caliphate Army to the revolutionaries to arouse counterrevolutionary sympathy. The British, being skeptical of how formidable these insurgents were, decided to use irregular power to counteract the revolutionaries. The Nationalist forces were distributed all around Turkey, so many smaller units were dispatched to face them. In İzmit there were two battalions of the British army. These units were to be used to rout the partisans under the command of Ali Fuat and Refet Pasha.

 

Anatolia had many competing forces on its soil: British troops, Nationalist militia (Kuva-yi Milliye), the sultan's army (Kuva-yi İnzibatiye), and Anzavur's bands. On 13 April 1920, an uprising supported by Anzavur against the GNA occurred at Düzce as a direct consequence of the fatwa. Within days the rebellion spread to Bolu and Gerede. The movement engulfed northwestern Anatolia for about a month. On 14 June, Nationalist militia fought a pitched battle near İzmit against the Kuva-yi İnzibatiye, Anzavur's bands, and British units. Yet under heavy attack some of the Kuva-yi İnzibatiye deserted and joined the Nationalist militia. Anzavur was not so lucky, as the Nationalists tasked Ethem the Circassian with crushing Anzavur's revolt. This revealed the sultan did not have the unwavering support of his own men and allies. Meanwhile, the rest of these forces withdrew behind the British lines which held their position. For now, Istanbul was out of Ankara's grasp.

 

The clash outside İzmit brought serious consequences. British forces conducted combat operations on the Nationalists and the Royal Air Force carried out aerial bombardments against the positions, which forced Nationalist forces to temporarily retreat to more secure missions. The British commander in Turkey, General George Milne—, asked for reinforcements. This led to a study to determine what would be required to defeat the Turkish Nationalists. The report, signed by French Field Marshal Ferdinand Foch, concluded that 27 divisions were necessary, but the British army did not have 27 divisions to spare. Also, a deployment of this size could have disastrous political consequences back home. World War I had just ended, and the British public would not support another lengthy and costly expedition.

 

The British accepted the fact that a nationalist movement could not be defeated without deployment of consistent and well-trained forces. On 25 June, the forces originating from Kuva-i İnzibatiye were dismantled under British supervision. The British realised that the best option to overcome these Turkish Nationalists was to use a force that was battle-tested and fierce enough to fight the Turks on their own soil. The British had to look no further than Turkey's neighbor already occupying its territory: Greece.

 

Eleftherios Venizelos, pessimistic of the rapidly deteriorating situation in Anatolia, requested to the Allies that a peace treaty be drawn up with the hope that fighting would stop. The subsequent treaty of Sèvres in August 1920 confirmed the Arab provinces of the empire would be reorganized into new nations given to Britain and France in the form of Mandates by the League of Nations, while the rest of the Empire would be partitioned between Greece, Italy, France (via Syrian mandate), Britain (via Iraqi mandate), Armenia (potentially under an American mandate), and Georgia. Smyrna would hold a plebiscite on whether to stay with Greece or Turkey, and the Kurdistan region would hold one on the question of independence. British, French, and Italian spheres of influence would also extend into Anatolia beyond the land concessions. The old capital of Constantinople as well as the Dardanelles would be under international League of Nations control.

 

However, the treaty could never come into effect. The treaty was extremely unpopular, with protests against the final document held even before its release in Sultanahmet square. Though Mehmed VI and Ferid Pasha loathed the treaty, they did not want Istanbul to join Ankara in nationalist struggle. The Ottoman government and Greece never ratified it. Though Ferid Pasha signed the treaty, the Ottoman Senate, the upper house with seats appointed by the sultan, refused to ratify the treaty. Greece disagreed on the borders drawn. The other allies began to fracture their support of the settlement immediately. Italy started openly supporting the Nationalists with arms by the end of 1920, and the French signed another separate peace treaty with Ankara only months later.

 

Kemal's GNA Government responded to the Treaty of Sèvres by promulgating a new constitution in January 1921. The resulting constitution consecrated the principle of popular sovereignty; authority not deriving from the unelected sultan, but from the Turkish people who elect governments representative of their interests. This document became the legal basis for the war of independence by the GNA, as the sultan's signature of the Treaty of Sèvres would be unconstitutional as his position was not elected. While the constitution did not specify a future role of the sultan, the document gave Kemal ever more legitimacy in the eyes of Turks for justified resistance against Istanbul.

 

In contrast to the Eastern and Western fronts, it was mostly unorganized Kuva-yi Milliye which were fighting in the Southern Front against France. They had help from the Syrians, who were fighting their own war with the French.

 

The British troops which occupied coastal Syria by the end of World War I were replaced by French troops over 1919, with the Syrian interior going to Faisal bin Al-Hussein's self-proclaimed Arab Kingdom of Syria. France which wanted to take control of all of Syria and Cilicia. There was also a desire facilitate the return of Armenian refugees in the region to their homes, and the occupation force consisted of the French Armenian Legion as well as various Armenian militia groups. 150,000 Armenians were repatriated to their homes within months of French occupation. On 21 January 1920, a Turkish Nationalist uprising and siege occurred against the French garrison in Marash. The French position untenable they retreated to Islahiye, resulting in a massacre of many Armenians by Turkish militia. A grueling siege followed in Antep which featured intense sectarian violence between Turks and Armenians. After a failed uprising by the Nationalists in Adana, by 1921, the French and Turks signed an armistice and eventually a treaty was brokered demarcating the border between the Ankara government and French controlled Syria. In the end, there was a mass exodus of Cilician Armenians to French controlled Syria, Previous Armenian survivors of deportation found themselves again as refugees and families which avoided the worst of the six years violence were forced from their homes, ending thousands of years of Christian presence in Southern Anatolia.[146] With France being the first Allied power to recognize and negotiate with the Ankara government only months after signing the Treaty of Sèvres, it was the first to break from the coordinated Allied approach to the Eastern question. In 1923 the Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon under French authority would be proclaimed in former Ottoman territory.

 

Some efforts to coordinate between Turkish Nationalists and the Syrian rebels persisted from 1920 to 1921, with the Nationalists supporting the Faisal's kingdom through Ibrahim Hanunu and Alawite groups which were also fighting the French. While the French conquered Syria, Cilicia had to be abandoned.

 

Kuva-yi Milliye also engaged with British forces in the "Al-Jazira Front," primarily in Mosul. Ali İhsan Pasha (Sabis) and his forces defending Mosul would surrender to the British in October 1918, but the British ignored the armistice and seized the city, following which the pasha also ignored the armistice and distributed weapons to the locals. Even before Mustafa Kemal's movement was fully organized, rogue commanders found allies in Kurdish tribes. The Kurds detested the taxes and centralization the British demanded, including Shaykh Mahmud of the Barzani family. Having previously supported the British invasion of Mesopotamia to become the governor of South Kurdistan, Mahmud revolted but was apprehended by 1919. Without legitimacy to govern the region, he was released from captivity to Sulaymaniyah, where he again declared an uprising against the British as the King of Kurdistan. Though an alliance existed with the Turks, little material support came to him from Ankara, and by 1923 there was a desire to cease hostilities between the Turks and British at Barzanji's expense. Mahmud was overthrown in 1924, and after a 1926 plebiscite, Mosul was awarded to British-controlled Iraq.

 

Since 1917, the Caucasus was in a chaotic state. The border of newly independent Armenia and the Ottoman Empire was defined in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (3 March 1918) after the Bolshevik revolution, and later by the Treaty of Batum (4 June 1918). To the east, Armenia was at war with the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic after the breakup of the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic, and received support from Anton Denikin's White Russian Army. It was obvious that after the Armistice of Mudros (30 October 1918) the eastern border was not going to stay as it was drawn, which mandated the evacuation of the Ottoman army back to its 1914 borders. Right after the Armistice of Mudros was signed, pro-Ottoman provisional republics were proclaimed in Kars and Aras which were subsequently invaded by Armenia. Ottoman soldiers were convinced not to demobilize lest the area become a 'second Macedonia'.[149] Both sides of the new borders had massive refugee populations and famine, which were compounded by the renewed and more symmetric sectarian violence (See Massacres of Azerbaijanis in Armenia (1917–1921) and Muslim uprisings in Kars and Sharur–Nakhichevan). There were talks going on with the Armenian Diaspora and Allied Powers on reshaping the border. Woodrow Wilson agreed to transfer territories to Armenia based on the principles of national self-determination. The results of these talks were to be reflected on the Treaty of Sèvres (10 August 1920).

 

Kâzım Karabekir Pasha, commander of the XV corps, encountered Muslim refugees fleeing from the Armenian army, but did not have the authority to cross the border. Karabekir's two reports (30 May and 4 June 1920) outlined the situation in the region. He recommended redrawing the eastern borders, especially around Erzurum. The Russian government was receptive to this and demanded that Van and Bitlis be transferred to Armenia. This was unacceptable to the Turkish revolutionaries. However, Soviet support was absolutely vital for the Turkish Nationalist movement, as Turkey was underdeveloped and had no domestic armaments industry. Bakir Sami (Kunduh) was assigned to negotiate with the Bolsheviks.

 

On 24 September 1920, Karabekir's XV corps and Kurdish militia advance on Kars, blowing through Armenian opposition, and then Alexandropol. With an advance on Yerevan imminent, on 28 November 1920, the 11th Red Army under the command of Anatoliy Gekker crossed over into Armenia from Soviet Azerbaijan, and the Armenian government surrendered to Bolshevik forces, ending the conflict.

 

The Treaty of Alexandropol (2—3 December 1920) was the first treaty (although illegitimate) signed by the Turkish revolutionaries. The 10th article in the Treaty of Alexandropol stated that Armenia renounced the Treaty of Sèvres and its allotted partition of Anatolia. The agreement was signed with representatives of the former government of Armenia, which by that time had no de jure or de facto power in Armenia, since Soviet rule was already established in the country. On 16 March 1921, the Bolsheviks and Turkey signed a more comprehensive agreement, the Treaty of Kars, which involved representatives of Soviet Armenia, Soviet Azerbaijan, and Soviet Georgia.

 

Throughout most of his life, Atatürk was a moderate-to-heavy drinker, often consuming half a litre of rakı a day; he also smoked tobacco, predominantly in the form of cigarettes. During 1937, indications that Atatürk's health was worsening started to appear. In early 1938, while on a trip to Yalova, he suffered from a serious illness. He went to Istanbul for treatment, where he was diagnosed with cirrhosis. During his stay in Istanbul, he made an effort to keep up with his regular lifestyle, but eventually succumbed to his illness. He died on 10 November 1938, at the age of 57, in the Dolmabahçe Palace.

 

Atatürk's funeral called forth both sorrow and pride in Turkey, and 17 countries sent special representatives, while nine contributed armed detachments to the cortège. Atatürk's remains were originally laid to rest in the Ethnography Museum of Ankara, but they were transferred on 10 November 1953 (15 years after his death) in a 42-ton sarcophagus to a mausoleum overlooking Ankara, Anıtkabir.

 

In his will, Atatürk donated all of his possessions to the Republican People's Party, provided that the yearly interest of his funds would be used to look after his sister Makbule and his adopted children, and fund the higher education of İsmet İnönü's children. The remainder was willed to the Turkish Language Association and the Turkish Historical Society.

The outliers tend to be in museums and the dense cluster best illustrates the large active area that blends between late iron age tribal demographys. Whilst dominating the Vettone zone, there was no symbolic 'power' exclusivity, with verracos found in areas today considered as being of Callaeci, Lustitani and Astures 'categories'.

 

I adjusted the map so that comparisons of size can be made between the verraco 'area' and examples of today's territories, for example Switzerland, Belgium and Austria.

 

The data for the map was compiled for the website www.verracos.es/ and there are over 400 known examples, with many, many more either eaten by rivers, blocked in building foundations, sunken under fields or worn back into their granitic geology.

 

The date range of mid 4th to 1st centuries BC is often quoted, so within the optic of 2400ybp and into true protohistory, with its last real or struggling gasps from into the fade-away from prehistory through the first iron age centuries of history's early medieval.

 

Verracos are not slight ornaments and are physical objects that appear as large as life, even if some are regularly either side of real-world norms. Sculptures of pigs and cows and bulls dominate their number, with credible peripheral examples of horses, dogs, calves and even a human (on all fours!) also existing.

Right. Today's cows moo and munch from deep within the Verraco zone - specifically from the approach to the modest yet vivid castro of Pena Redona. A deep gorges is not far away with the existence of steep fluvial pathways perhaps being common to the greater verraco territory.

 

I first started to post some of my collection of images of verracos in September of this year. Today, by mid November, I am starting to post my arguments and conclusions about the cultural function and contexts of these enigmatic megaliths. These 8 numbered and associated posts follow and develop arguments via linked texts, with my past verraco posts offering supporting detail. My Flickr album of the same name will start with this 8 part text. I have not come across my explanation in reading, but that is not to say that it does not exist, and I will add and date any relevant complements.

 

The texts will try to understand the damage to these granite sculptures, and to see how these 'image animals' fitted in with a continuity of early agriculture and late megalitism. With my explanation, a function and place in society is proposed, as is an idea as to how they phase change out of past culture. And as the Roman invasions became a very real shadow on the horizon, an argument will be made that a Verraco marked an end of great living theatres - concluding a vision in prehistory.

For this image I created an impression. Before looking at its illustration, it is perhaps worth pointing out several weaknesses to the image. There are issues of scale, with the verraco being clearly too big, and the tree-pole too small. There are also issues of artistic licence, where the wolfpack is also an inanimate mineral outcrop as occasional howls in the landscape blur with the pack's howling identity. Also, the image seems to inhabit both day and night, with the bird-of-prey more eagle or vulture than grand-duc owl, and the distant flock of goats still out on their hill, yet the silence of night is apparent. There are both the dark vistas and the howling wolves of night, and the active fires of day. There are also issues of authenticity - some castros present tight arrays of round houses, lets say the Castro de Baroña, whereas others offer a grid of square houses - for example La Hoya. Sites with a flexibility of space and function, such as Ullaca, also exist. In my image, the 'castro' seems almost to be a hybrid of castro and shepherd's chozos with corral (see past posts).

 

Everything in the image is intentional. It shows both night and day, both a castro and a croft and a chozos. It depicts a wolf-like element from a landscape that can also howl and birds of prey in both day and night. It is an image that has a flexibility and a need to be finished by the viewer's minds eye.

 

Pastoral man, with his herds and flocks leaves traces on the land, traces that do not clean, rather they fade into composts. The smell of wool combed by blackberry bramble, the dot-to-dot of pat and dropping clearly marking path, entrance and crossroad. And then the noise: chants of baaaa, moo and neigh: oink, grunt and bleet. Castros, villages, chozos and crofts served individuals and communities, and communities had animals for functions that spread from centralised trade down to individual winter heat. Settlements, inside and outside, towards and away, will have smelt, sound and looked interesting to the instinct and inquisitive assessments of birds-of-prey, foxes, marten and wolves.

 

Flocks and new-borns will have thus stimulated interest among predators, who are constantly tuning into signals of potential food: eyes in the day, over the wan and even through the night. An otherwise light sleeping and attentive shepherd may slip off his normal guard whilst trading through his local castro, and he might regret his jovial conversation, evening song-and-dance; and above all, his reliance on the attentiveness of others.

 

The geography of the verraco zone is crossed by deep gorges fed from the waters of regular high sierras, and for all of the long hot 'hells' of summers, central and north western Spain and Portugal do have water. Grasslands are warmed into two real growing seasons of spring and autumn, and local and migrating birds and local mammals enjoy the rich and constantly renewing stocks of dry seed. Many varieties of birds-of-prey look to exploit situations. Vultures scavenge, but can also organise between themselves to make animals run over cliffs and other shock mischiefs. Gosshawks and kites dive, eagles chance firm grips, grand-ducs eat anything from large insects up to the size of a hare, and wolves watch, learn and cooperate. Some scavengers look for the old, the ill or the young or isolated and peck to a point when the lifestyles of scavenger and predator seem to merge.

 

The Neolithic revolution was a mindset that looked at the living world and tried to observe, select and effect change. Docile, fat and milky offspring over the aggressive and lean. Big roots, sweet fruit and independent grains over the bitter and tight. By the Iron age, it is credible to expect that flacons, hawks, eagles and buzzards joined dogs in being trained to collect small animals for man, and in that then very modern world, it is very possible that people didn't register a great distinction between domestication and training.

 

Some villages and areas may have sat-back content to work with the 'Neolithic package' of ready to work domesticated animals and plants, but the system itself of "observation, selection and managed action with a target in mind" will have been a mindset and meme that inspired many into a sense of place and epoch. Here, shepherds and pastoralists were the 'computer scientists' of the late ages of prehistory, and its following protohistory.

 

Finding a way to dissuade birds-of-prey, wolves and foxes from becoming locked by their instincts and inquisitive learning into the growing nodes of society may have been an issue for this Iberian geography. The biomass of Iberian scrub and meadow-grain surely supported more predators than from further to the north, and the many steep deep valleys of the Iberian north, centre and west provided safe zones for packs of wolves away from the most organised hunting party. Getting into the mind of a predator required observation, strategy and a will to change in the wild.

 

Creating an artifice - a false animal - that could trick troublesome examples of predators, so that they could be either killed, captured or even trained to re-think the new conglomerated and urban demographys of Castro, hamlet, chozos and village, here being the push to form and create verracos.

 

Knowing that predators do not like to have been seen by the alert and watchful eyes of their potential prey, so favouring fake animals with eyes that are slight and passive.

 

Knowing that both predators and scavengers are looking out for animals that are alone.

 

Knowing that the predator's instinct and mind is excited by the rounded shape of a carcase filled with blood, flesh and bone.

 

Knowing that the predator investigates a potential prey; calculating and placing strategies in line. Knowing that doubts can be appeased by making the details of life clear, with the satiating stimuli of life's animal 'keys' visible for viscerally compulsive predatorial conceptions (eyes, nostril, sexual organs, anus, tail...).

 

Knowing that predators open carcasses by the anus, the sexual organs and the throat, and making all of these indubitable clear lines, and in so doing, adding to the attraction of the granite artifice.

 

Showing the horns and tusk as proof-of-concept without weaponizing their image with point and exaggeration, resulting in verraco horns are visible but never threatening and often atrophied.

 

A static animal with straight legs is either half-asleep, old or ill - all states that regularly occur in nature - and all at the centre of many a predators dream. Ruminating outlines rather than alert beasts about to spring to run or fight.

 

Verracos seem designed to charm and enthral the instinct of the very predators that could undermine the serenity of man's increasingly expanding and negotiating sedentary.

 

From high in the sky, the bird of prey that has over several months locked onto the landscape of the castro (and in so doing, taken several young animals), dives. The bird picks up speed with the sun behind its wings. To draw extra confidence around the proposed situation, a pile of manure has been positioned behind the back legs. From behind a temporary screen, the keepers of this verraco make the noises of the manufactured motionless animal, and pull strings to make bunches of grass first obscure and then reveal the stone form in much the same way that a fowler has always learned bird calls and employed decoys from far into hominid pasts. The verraco's team may grunt, or they moo with uncanny realism - calm, serious and unabashed. And as a fishing-rod may come-and-go to tease attention, so it might be the case that a verraco is covered from view until the desaturated landscape of dawn and dusk. Hiding and revealing the verraco would certainly be an art, and contemporary experimental archaeologists that simply place and watch a verraco from afar without a sense of timing and 'theatre', would only be akin to persons watching a magician's dummy hoping to see magic. The diving bird now includes its shadow and swoops to kill. The keepers of the verraco either witness the bird as it is instantly killed by hitting the hard stone, or, they add spear or knife to the dazed and confused. The problem predator has been neutralised and prized feathers, bones and claws are traded to the additional profit of the veracco's guardians.

 

We may suggest that the large Yaca de Yeltes castro asked that the 'best' team come once a year, and the well 'paid' verraco team have gone as far as installing a field of raised stones to, amongst other advantage, stop inquisitive landed vultures from running a gawk take-off.

 

On other occasions, the bird-of-prey swoops to catch an offering of meat, and here, with the help that the focus of a verraco provided, this bird is locked into a repeatable narrative, taking the cuts from indents made in the verraco's back. The action of feeding the bird-of-prey will ultimately lead to falconry or hawking - man and animal trained to work and hunt together. Trained birds-of-prey another source of income for the keepers of the verraco. On other occasions, clay is moulded flat into the pits, and a strip of matching back-hide is pinned into the clay so that from above, the verraco matches reality, and from the oblique shaded sides it silhouettes with close proximity. Both utilities from one addition.

 

Pits in clapper-bridge stones and on carved steps (4:8) had been used aside rivers to focus and attract birds and animals to key spots for generations in the local area, and finding elegant new applications involved simple steps and bridges of creativity in the mind's eye.

 

Even if they could never attack a large animal, foxes would simply be too inquisitive to the hyper-reality of sound, shape and smell, and in-turn fall prey to the managed situation.

 

Some localities arranged for a permanent verraco to guard their dynamic community, and this sense of guarding became part of their symbolic importance, with some veraccos just guarding as emblems of mind over wild. Some of these would be smaller and less refined, but still visibly verracos (6:8).

 

Verracos of bears could be made to attracted naturally short sighted real bears, and the smell of acorns coupled with the sight and sound of an apparent hog could be made to attracted wild boars - unconstrained creative applications, and all for watching local eyes and their vivid stories, as many verracos would move from place to place.

 

We might imagine that the Yacca de Yeltes verraco stayed on

with the aim of teaching a returning pack of wolves a lesson (wolves can have vast territories and wander the crests and vales as winter pinched the Sierras, Picos and Pyrenees). The associated field of 'standing stones' here stopping the wolves from collecting a definitive line of sight.

 

Over the period, the specific verraco team had been fed by the population of the castro. They have been offered shelter, and have collected fur and other items for trade. They also handed over a trained eagle in exchange for metal goods and assured contacts. They had been merry, helping with odd jobs of heavy lifting, as these keepers of the verraco are people who have phase-changed from a megalithic heritage and they are strong and liked to be known as strong. During their stay, conversations led to a demand from a new village 5 kilometres away. The village had been having a problem with vultures and a fox. The villagers also believe that a veracco brought luck to their settlement, symbolic security and even social status and credibility. Verracos were seen as more 'intelligent' than the foils of nature.

 

The village was accessed by a cart track and the verraco team strapped timbers to its side, and with a heave, they lift and sing off to their next 'job'. The verracos pedestal kept the centre of gravity low, and made it easier to transport the weight on and off the cart, and then into the rocky terrain aside the gully behind the village that was funnelling problems. The sedentary life is good, but it is not for everyone. And every time the team puff the verraco back onto the ground, some of its granites crumbles away. On more occasions than they would like to mention, as they walk it towards its new scene of theatre, someone stumbles, and the animal falls onto its face. And as they try to position the verraco between stone outcrops to create natural nuance to its outlines, they trip again, stumble, bash, and jam the forward facing verraco ... and onto pedestal ... then onto legs: again and again. Chips and 'crumbs' falling as granite-sand to never be recognised or counted.

 

The team had seen time worn and travelled verracos covered with pelts of stitched realism to the detriment of clean lines and silhouettes and apparent details, and on the day they finally stopped to either make or trade for a brand new example, they exchanged their now battered companion to a 'lesser' team, or for use in a competition of strength during a summer festival.

 

Predators were suspicious of lone sheep and goats, and local people liked to see powerful and vivid animals.

 

Verracos offered leverage over issues related to the living landscape. Maybe they were paraded once a year and once again fell from the shoulders of young teams with minds stronger than muscles. Maybe some eventually guarded over graves, here still thought to be capable of attracting and dominating the surprise elements of the wild world in controlled and intelligent ways. Confronting powerful 'elements' is seen elsewhere in Iberian culture. Drawing-in spirits of mischief and ill fortune being one of the elements principle of the 'akelarre'. Drawing in the danger of the most powerful bull, being one of the principles of 'La tauromachie'.

 

And if the main function of the verraco can be summarised as to attract unreasonable wild agitators into situations of weakness, then when the Romans landed on the eastern side of the Iberian peninsula, and when topics of conversation changed and adjusted for this new breed of predator, it is very possible, and indeed perhaps typically human and wry, that a verraco was made of a Roman soldier on all-fours with his detailed behind in the air. In this scenario, the verraco of 'San Felices de Los Galegos' (pictured below) may just have carried Roman costume plundered from battle to the south or east. And as the verracos were positioned aside new urban plots, by natural crags, small creeks and slight gullies, Romans didn't see them as examples of power and social hierarchy, and left them untouched as pastoral inconsequence, to their minds, naturally belittled aside the new Roman columns.

 

I shall call this hypothesis the 'managing the wild' theory of verracos. Readers should contrast this hypothesis with others.

 

My last post in this series (8:8) will look at a potential deep root to the principle of drawing-in troublesome elements rather than running after.

Once a head-count had taken place and several 'US School type' Buses had been sourced, we were taken around the airport to the old Terminal building

 

Previdecales Airport has been modernised since our arrival there 33 years ago with a runway extension and a new Terminal.

 

Suffice to say that 300 passengers mostly with few possessions were a huge burden on the minimal facilities that the Airport then offered

 

Visiting traffic there was a mixture of General Aviation and light aircraft with the odd Boeing 727 and BAC 111 thrown in. Note that both of those latter airliners have built-in rear Airstairs - something that as the day wore on became an issue.

 

Bear in mind that back then 'Mobile (Cell) phones' were still of the huge 'brick' type and as such tele-communications were limited but the first thing that happened was a 'CBS' press crew with camera arrived in a light 'Twin'

 

By then the crew had elected to taxi the Tristar back to park a few hundred yards away and a ground crew began unloading all the luggage onto the Tarmac

 

A while later a 'Company' Boeing 727 arrived and taxied in running right up to the throng of people spilled outside of the small Terminal and promptly spun it through 180 degrees, blowing all the debris, sand and anything else all over us so that it's Airstairs were immediately accessible.

 

Then a couple of 'Eastern' suits appeared and tried to get some order dictating that any injured, plus women and children would go first on to San Juan - our intended destination. We elected to stick together as at that point we still had nothing to our name bar what we stood up in.

 

After that one departed we were allowed out to the Tristar to identify and collect our luggage and then there was the problem of possessions still in the cabin.

 

A set of standard Air stairs were sourced along with a wooden ladder which was propped up on the top of them to get us up to the doors!!!

 

Once that protracted exercise was sorted, they bussed us to Club Med for a couple of hours while we waited for the 727 to return.

 

Much later it did and making the same 'passenger friendly' pirouette in front of us, we clambered aboard with a couple of dozen passengers having to climb aboard the Tristar which they'd decided to risk flying out

 

Having spent several hours there in not ideal circumstances and with two fairly worn-out youngsters we arrived in Puerto Rico after midnight to a hotel arranged by Eastern before completing our trip a day later than planned.

 

After all that 'fun' imagine my wife's 'delight' in then having a trip in a tiny Britten-Norman Islander - skimming the Carribean waves for 45 minutes or so down to Beef Island in the British Virgin islands!

 

Post-script

Trawling the web 33 years on - amazingly I found this report submitted the day after

It makes interesting reading and may have had an 'Eastern Corporate' bias to it as there were injuries and as far as we know the Tristar followed us out to San Juan a few minutes after we departed

 

As to Eastern - unlike many of the more vocal US passengers aboard we didn't file any Law Suits but did write to them suggesting a few things they might like to do differently should it ever occur again.

In reply - they kindly sent us a wad of Air Miles but ironically before we could use them - they went 'bust'!

Main story

 

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

 あらすじ

 大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。

 上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。

 そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。

 大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。

 「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」

 ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。

  

本編

 

人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。

 ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。

 もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。

 二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。

 再生だ。

 明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。

 それが再生の意味だ。

このロットナンバーは、眠っていたレオナルドダヴィンチの作品がオークションにかけらた際に付されたものです。

作品にはサインなどがいっさい記されていなかったため、彼の作品だと断定できませんでした。

しかし、様々な鑑定の結果、陽の光を浴びました。

誰にも気づかれない作品。肩書がなくとも静かに語りかける作品。

Ethiopia is experiencing a severe drought due to two consecutive poor rainy seasons, which means that millions of people are now in need of assistance.

Humanitarian aid has prevented the drought in the Amhara and Afar regions from turning into a full scale disaster. But as El Niño is set to worsen an already difficult situation, resources and supplies need to be stepped up.
