HISTORY
Pillar completed 23rd September 1958 costing £47.19s.3d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NM52/T71 within the Mull secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1960. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in April 1979.
SITE VISIT
Approached from the southwest. Followed the mapped track network to NR406984 then a worn footpath which traverses up the west slope to the summit. This is the highest top on Cononsay. An adjacent cairn to the southwest overtops the trig column. The pillar is in good condition. The spider retains its original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. The flush bracket faces NNE, compass measurement 15°. Vented through the left (southeast) sight hole. The full 360° panoramic view includes Mull, Scarba, Jura and Islay.
Photographed: 26th June 2014, GRP.
