Decided to beef up the sound of the laptop using computer multimedia speakers, but to have them built into the coffee table that I use for the laptop. The Ikea Lack coffee table is very light and is filled with an easily removable cardboard honeycomb structure which makes it ideal for a project like this. The speaker system was a surplus Yamaha YST-M20DSP.
Carolyn decided to take a picture of her Magic Shelf-created knick-knack corner, prior to dismantling it -- 5 years of addition building, and we're finally moving out of our corner. One year later, the moving is still not complete -- mostly due to a series of idiotic and undependable contractors. We're still waiting on some today, over a year later.

I actually had no idea it was already 1am. This is also the first time I've had a noise complaint, ever, from anyone.
People should just knock and be like yo, turn it down a bit — not throw around ultimatums.
Kudos to him though if he actually does have an SPL meter lying around.
Update: This guy is actually pretty cool. I wrote a note back saying sorry and asked if he actually did have an SPL meter, and surprise enough he does: he wrote me back today. He does a bunch of DJing and audio stuff too. I guess he did try to knock but I was too absorbed in Ableton, so he just got really frustrated.

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 Computer Speaker. A very powerful 2.1 speaker system with great clarify. A little pricey though it performs well for me, either listening to music or watching movies. Really worth every penny spent.
I took the grills off the speakers in my office to see if they would sound better... I think they do (better high end). They also look cooler. So it is decided, no grills.
