Our surveys of incoming students shows that desktop computer ownership is approximately 22%. Whereas mobile device ownership is increasing rapidly. Approx 93% of our first year students own a laptop or tablet, with 78% having an internet-enabled mobile phone.

In lectures we are seeing more students turning to laptops, tablets and smartphones to aid their in-class learning. This 'wall of laptops' hides both a multitude of sins (Facebook) and empowerment of the student (drawing upon resources from the internet to complement or challenge the lecturer). Note-taking can also be encouraged in digital form, pulling together such resources as the lecture progresses.

In our ongoing efforts to support STEM education in South Africa, we recently hosted Chelsey Roebuck, co-founder and executive director of Elite Education, to present a series of digital literacy and coding workshops to learners in Ga-Rankuwa and Mamelodi.

Skills students gained ranged from emailing and web research do's and don'ts to HTML coding.

Roebuck presented these workshops to learners from the LEAP Science School in Ga-Rankuwa and to the students from our Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room in Mamelodi.

Documents stored online either in the cloud (for sharing and collaboration) or as digital downloads, for example from journal publishers or websites, are much more accessible and easier to search and get hold of compared to books. Books are bound in the physical world, not able to be shared on different devices or stored virtually. Lest we forget the queue for the requested item in the Library.

When providing resources which we require students to read we use PDFs (or other digital documents, ebooks) instead of books to make it easier for students to get hold of the material. This does not mean we prohibit the use of books, indeed we still encourage wider reading, but in order to ensure students receive a baseline exposure to literature our dependency on books has declined.
