Here is a cool dual screen computer set up and what's interesting is that
you can have multiple windows up at the same time and multitask to your
heart's delight. But this photo is not about the actual screens themselves,
it's really about the information you have access to within the system. The
screens are just a tool to get to the really cool learning stuff. That's
why I think language fits this photo. Because with the technology today you
can easily listen, watch, or create many different sources of entertainment
in different languages. Notice from left to right: anime that can be
listened to in Japanese, Songs translated into Korean and analyzed
by Canadians, and a Rainbow Dash subtitled into 30 different languages. How
awesome is that? Language is now less of a barrier than before and

My heatsink fan started making all kinds of horrid squealing noises, so I had to take this picture to identify the replacement parts needed to the nice people at www.chillblast.com where I originally bought the system from.
Had to get the IT geek at work to fix it when the replacement arrived - that cost me a packet of cookies !!
Here's Jim's full retro set-up busy at its day-to-day work alongside its younger relatives. For the sharp-sighted among you, Jim also points out the picture includes 'two old modems (Minor Miracles WS2000 and Pace Nightingale) - both still fully operational.'
As to his (very honest) reasons for keeping all this old kit, Jim says: 'I like to see old kit that's still useful being put to use. And I'm sad.'
So, I've finally decided to get around to joining in the Project 365 fun! This is the first image in my first year, and as such, features the trusty Logitech Trackman Wheel which is currently tethered to my office Mac Pro. I reckon it'll be seeing a fair bit of action over the coming 12 months, while hopefully reducing wear and tear on my right wrist! Oh and by the way, happy new year :)
In the last few months I learnt a lot about light, and how to control it. It was a big leap forward for me as a photographer.

April 2006 - This hard disk enclosure holds the 120-gigabyte extra drive that I replaced with a new Seagate 300G. It still worked and I thought I might be convenient to have storage that'd could plug into the USB port of the nearest computer.
I keep general comments at my eJournal and images.
The PCB pictured is from an IBM Model M keyboard, specifically a M5-1 made in 1993. The M5-1 has a small trackball mouse just above the cursor keys. This board is for the mouse. The keyboard's mouse recently quit working, so I took it apart to diagnose the problem. I think the capacitor pictured (center; blurry metal cylinder) has failed based on what looks like corrosion on the board below the capacitor to it's right. They can leak, and the leakage damages the board.
This is the stuff under the trackball on an IBM Model M5-1 keyboard. It uses LED and phototransistor pairs along with gear-like disks to sense the motion of the ball. I was going to guess photodiode, but some components are labeled with 'D' and others with 'T'.

To make this all possible, I run the C: Drive and the MadDog off of the integrated IDE controllers on the motherboard, while Drives D: through K: are controlled by two Maxtor ATA133 PCI Local Bus IDE Controller cards with the Promise Technology chip. To power all of these drives, I am running a 600W power supply.
Audio is modest - AC97 built into the Shuttle AK31 Socket A Athlon/Duron motherboard.
AGP2 Video card is an ATI Radeon 9550 with 246MB DDR.
