Everyone wanted to play the vintage PONG machine that I brought in. In the photo, I'm looking over my shoulder to make sure that they don't sneak up on me. I couldn't stand the laugh of that nerd behind me and he stayed there the whole time I played. I could understand why the nerds wanted to play it, but the MAC Dude?!?

I'm offering special retro pricing on the first issue in honor of PONG with a 1972 price tag of 50¢.

Always looking to learn something new, today I decided to dabble with macro photography. On my last visit to Hong Kong I bought a cheap macro/wide-angle lens that screws on to the lens of my NEX-6 kit lens. The quality is quite bad though, especially in wide-angle mode - there is a lot of chromatic aberration and blur towards the outside. It is not too bad though in macro photography mode.

I went to the garage to get an old hard drive, put it on the desk, and illuminated it with a strong LED desk light. I used a tripod to stabilize the camera. I moved the hard drive around on the table to center the object of interest in front of the lens.

Macro photography has a very shallow depth of field, so I selected 100 ISO and aperture 10, and manually focused to the desired object. Sony's focus peaking really helps - you see yellow lines wherever the focus is.

I processed two RAW exposures into a balanced HDR photo to enhance the micro-contrast. I applied just little HDR compression because too much would make the bokeh look unnatural. After that I applied strong vignetting to draw the eyes to the center. I like the result, with the bokeh looking like colorful diamonds.

This weeks theme made me dig out some of my older hardware.

Remember modems? The early helpers to get you online. Here you see a portion of a hardware modem, with Lucent’s Venus chip. Sometimes they were also referred to as real modems. This modem has a chip that handled the communication when you dialed in. Its light weight cousins, the Win- or Soft Modems, did not, here the chip was emulated via software.

If all you ever used was a Windows machine, you probably cared less or didn’t even know there is a difference. I however used Linux (now I have a Mac). The vast majority of Win modems did not work under Linux. So I had to bite the bullet and buy this much more expensive modem. The cost was 3-4 times higher than a soft-modem. This all happened at a time where you could not just buy anything you needed on the internet, so finding these could take some time.

This now almost ancient piece of hardware did its duty for many years (there is still visible dust) and should I ever feel the urge or have the need to use a dialup connection, it probably still works.
